Hi, Who can help me with the automatic startup of the program setiathome located at /usr/local/bin/setiathomeproject/setiathome I have tryed to manipulate a script that is starting named but i can't figure out how i can simple startup a program, it may be an startup that is using an tty since i want to see what is happening. [SuSE Linux] Help needed with @home & SuSE 6.1 and AWE64 setup.

Hello All, in the 12 hours I've been on this mailing list, I've learned SOOOO much. thanks to all! I'm semi new to linux, but extremely new to KDE and SuSE. I can't for the life of me get my machine to connect to the internet. I've tried everything to setup the ip and everything else... and it's not connecting. Says that the network is unreachable. Anyone else @home have this kind of problem or any pointers? My @home is always working and on... so I setup my computer looking for the name server 24.2.7.33 and 24.2.7.34 Everything else is setup correctly as far as I know. The howto's... I'd like to know HOWTO find the people who wrote them. I can't understand them. I'm from the south... redneck yes. Howto's didn't help my problem either. Now, the second problem is sound blaster AWE64. Anyhow commands that WILL get it to work. It's in the default 0x0220/irq5/dma1/dma16=5/0388 setup. I dunno.. it's act like it's playing a cd, but volume controls say I don't have permission, I'm logged in as root, and I can't hear any music. Volume should be ok. I heard crackling a bit when hitting the play, but I dunno what is wrong. Sorry this is so long, but I'm not eating, sleeping, or working out till I get this thing online again. I formatted my C drive/windoze 95 completely the other night. Yes, on purpose. hehe Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Segfaults, when they occur, most usually happen for Linux users during kernel compilations. Unfortunately, those in the know say that this is due to poor quality RAM. I take this to mean (in more genral terms) that the motherboard chipset is attempting to read/write faster than the DRAM can cope with. The theory is, that most of the time your machine isn't doing much and (somehow) your DRAM manages to deliver. But, when compiling a kernel, the DRAM is really getting thrashed by the processor and this (somehow) enhances the risk of a bit randomly flipping its value somewhere. When a bit flip happens, sometimes it will go unnoticed for a while. It might be a location in which data is stored, or a program instruction, or an address. Whichever, you can expect that an error will show up somewhere at some point. Executing an inappropriate instruction or using incorrect data is bound to screw something up. If it was an address that was changed, then this will cause the program to jump to a wholly inappropriate (or meaningless) piece of code or fetch an inappropriate (or meaningless) chunk of data. In some cases, a flipped bit in an address is a high bit, which makes a large difference to the location being pointed to. Since 32-bit numbers are quite large (can address 4 billion locations) compared to the amount of memory you actually have (typically 32 million - 128 million locations), many flipped addresses point to nonexistent memory. Most will certainly point outside of the memory space allocated by the process accessing that flipped address. When this happens and the program tries to access an illegal location, this is called a segmentation violation or segmentation fault or segfault for short. You can attempt to deal with this by slowing down your DRAM timings in your computer's BIOS setup screen. That's the theory anyway. The fact is that segfaults can just as easily be caused by buggy software. C programs especially use a lot of manually-implemented pointers and if they are not taken care of properly they can end up pointing at something inappropriate. If the program tries to dereference that pointer...segfault. My 2.2.9 kernel compilation segfaulted once or twice but also failed in a number of different ways, just as it would if random bits were being flipped, or indeed just as if the compiler and its tools were buggy with uninitialised static variables or badly managed pointers. All these failures were temporary, that is, if I restarted the compilation, it wouldn't usually fail at that point again. I don't think the hardware is at fault in my case because I compiled the 2.0.36 kernel dozens of times on the same machine under SuSE 5.3 and never had any problems. This seems to be peculiar to SuSE 6.1, or this specific release of compiler, linker and bintools, or the 2.2.x kernels. Ok I try to install the icq masq module. I went to the site to download it. I read the README and it said I need ipportfw. I did so. I downloaded the two files for my 2.0.35 kernel. Then I did: cd /usr/src/linux zcat subs-patch-1.37.gz | patch -p1 --->went ok. Compile the configuration utility: gcc ipportfw.c -o ipportfw chmod a+x ipportfw But where actually was I supposed to compile the ipportfw.c??? I did reboot but bash: ipportfw not a known command I guess my ipportfw is not working but why? Maybe this is while I can't do the #insmod ip_masq_icq.o unresolved symbol: ip_portfw_add unresolved symbol: ip_portfw_del unresolved symbol: ip_portfw_lookup Any clues how to resolv the ipportfw problem and may that hold my icq from being inserted as module? [SuSE Linux] Telnet Access

Hi All, I hope someone can help me with this too.... This is what i want..... I want to be able to telnet into my machine on port 110 to receive mail! I am currently using kmail to get mail from /var/spool/mail/root but i would prefer to use Netscape! i have put in 127.0.0.1 and also tried 127.0.0.2 as the mailserver but it won't connect! i have tried telnet 127.0.0.1 110 but it says connection refused. I have sendmail installed on my computer and it works fine. I have tried sendmail -bD to put it in daemon mode to listen on port 25 but i get the following error: 451 opendaemonsocket: connot bind: Address already in use The reason i want to be able to connect via telnet is when i am away from home.! The isp i use to get mail only allows me to get mail when connected to the ISP. Can this be done? If it can be done but not through sendmail can someone suggest a program i could use!... Now FTP what program can i use to be able to ftp to my machine to get files and put files on my system? Having said that, once you have the Creative sound fonts working properly, you can get some superb midi music out of it. But playing the same pieces through kmidi with all the supplied patches through my OPL3/SA2 card sounds like shite! Greetings: Ive been listening to this thread now for a couple of days. I was not aware of this problem as Ive been upgrading via Yast..ftp for some time now. Thinking back however I did run into this problem with the 5.x series of cd's as I bought a set and then later received a boxed set for evaluation from SuSE. mixed the discs up in my portable case and of course nothing worked. Called Scott M at the time and he pointed out that there were different version out pending the press date but the discs were not marked. Spending an hour with a felt pen solved the problem. If I remember the discussion correctly at the time there may be a solution to this well commented and directed discussion. Does not SuSE offer a business edition for it business clients in Europe? This could be a middle ground solution and an advantages business solution for all. Press one set of each release, documented and stable for business/commercial users....say X.0. This version is completely QA'd, documented inventoried and versioned, available in a boxed set or via ftp. For the casual user such as myself and others who want to play with the latest and greatest for no particular reason other than its there (OK call me foolish..but play is the operative word here) the releases would be numbered X.x This set would be documented, inventoried and version but not as extensively QA'd as the X.0 editions. All future upgrades would be marked as X.x+ The next stable business release would be issues at designated intervals with the coding of X+1.0 All editions could be made available as boxed sets, on the ftp sites and clearly documented and inventoried as a minimum. QA standards would naturally differ and support could be made available in accordance with existing plans or tailored to individual corporate needs. Also, all discs need to be clearly labeled with the release number...PLS The stable business release would be updated at lesser frequencies than the user edition which would sprout the latest and greatest as of press time. The advantage of this model is that commercial users have the advantage of having a stable release, a subscription that would issue SuSE official updates say twice annually. Others could be satiated by interim releases that need to be clearly marked as so. Hence both commercial and non-commercial users could update programs for security reasons or any other reasons via the ftp site of through a boxed set. If Im not mistaken SuSE is or was doing this in Europe. Could be good all around. The objective here is to grow linux into the business community. Clearly there are different requirements for each segment and the company that can address these needs of such diverse groups has the potential for a significant increase in market share. RH is good but there model is starting to tick off hard core and traditional users, at the same time moving quickly towards new adopters. SuSE may have a window of opportunity here, as so well presented by all the posts on this news group.
