hello all, I just completed a successful upgrade and I am damn happy about it. I went from a PII 266 on a PD440FX mb w/ 128 megs *simms* to this .. AMD K6-III 400 mhz ( on a Soyo SY-5EHM Mainboard ) 256 megs PC100 DIMM's Diamond Viper 550 PCI 16 meg Adaptec 2940 UW ( Fujitsu 4.3 and Seagate 2 GIG SCSI2 *bootdrive* ) Teac 32X SCSI cdrom Awe64 SBPNP ( using OSS *works great!* ) I usually compile from source for most of the software I use, and this thing is fast as hell. I would recommend AMD to anyone. I seem to have read earlier this week that someone had installed on an AMD K6 and it didn't see it correctly and they were going to have to recompile. I did a fresh install after backing up the files I needed to my /home and this is the output from cpuinfo. My question is .. why did I not have to recompile for it to see it correctly? In any event .. [SuSE Linux] SuSE Linux 6.1 and an /OPT partition

As rather new to Linux I just istalled SuSE Linux 6.1 and I tried to make an /OPT partition as I also want to install Applixware (I bought from SuSE too). There is an entry for /OPT in the settings for partitioning a HD, but when I tried that as a mount-point I got as reaction of the program that /MOUNT/OPT was a symbolic link to a not existing entry. I tried several times to partition my HD anew, but got that note all the times, so I did not make an /OPT partition. I thought that it was not nice, but also that I shoulsd not be a problem as in the the manuel with SuSE Linux 6.1 I found on page 50 a way to work around. As A have a very large /USR partition I tried to use your advice. Of course as root. But after I typed "cp -a /opt /usr" (as is written on page 50!) the program reacted with "cannot overwrite directory with new directory". I could not enter the other lines. When I give ls -a (as root) I see all the main entries (directories in DOS-terms) in blue, except OPT what is printed in white. I don't know what that means. As I am realy new to Linux, and as I did not find a fix at your website, I dont know what to do now, other than reinstall the whole progam and make a very large / (root) partition (for Applixware and others) but their is probably a better way out. [SuSE Linux] Printer Help Needed!

Hi there, I'm trying to configure Suse 6.1 to print to an HP Laserjet 5 connected to the network via an HP JetDirect Card. I can send jobs to the printer, but jobs orginating from anything but the basic text editor (Star Office, Netscape, etc.) result in one line of cryptic text followed by several blank pages. I created the printer using the KDE Printer Control Panel utility, and did some further configuring with the KDE HP Laserjet Control Panel. I took this route because YAST did not offer a remote printer selection (only parallel or serial). I'm believe the problem is that, because I used the KDE utilities, the correct apsfilter was not applied. But, I can't figure out how to apply that filter successfully either alone or in conjunction with the KDE utilities. Please, can someone help me out? Thanks for the prompt reply, but I have some bad news, it didn't work. I have an Adaptec AHA-2940UW. I looked in the manual for references to your instructions. I found how that /etc/conf.modules "parameters are nearly identical to those given at the LILO prompt (see chapter 14)." I referenced chapter 14 and found that my controller would be entered as "aic7xxx." I tried this. I tried many variations, no luck. It kept telling me that no SCSI adapters were found. I attempted another suggestion given by Hubert Mantel. The advice was to use modprobe for the aic7xxx in my /sbin/init.d/boot.local file. This found the card and I got a list of devices on the screen. What would be needed to use them? Mount them? I know I couldn't access them once I had logged in. Again, I attempted to RTFM , but it's just not sinking in fast enough to get me an operational system. Please remember I am truly a super-mega-neewbie. I just recompiled the kernel, & see no notable difference. I used Xconfig, & noticed no options that seemed relavent to my hard drive, other then enabling IDE itself (no references to DMA for example.). Am I missing something by using Xconfig? What is the likelihood that it's just a bad drive? It seems to work fine, but could there still be some sort of problem? Fortunately, I bought it from a good dealer, so I can return it for a refund or exchange if I can't get it working... Thanks! [SuSE Linux] Gateway address and broadcas number?

Hello SuSE folks! I tried to set home network of two computers winnt and suse. suse suppose to serve as a gateway for winnt to access the Internet. Linux box has a permanent Internet ppp0 (modem) connection with the static IP address. In this case what is IP number of my Gateway and the broadcast number I should define in etc/rc.config? Primary I defined in /etc/hosts local 127.0.0.1 192.168.1.100 suse.mydomain.com suse 192.168.1.1 winnt.mydomain.com winnt I assumed that 192.168.1.100 is an Ethernet address for Gateway and host named suse. 192.168.1.1 is an Ethernet address for host named winnt. I sat up two my DNSs in /etc/resolv.conf earch mydns.com nameserver 193.141.17.1 nameserver 193.141.17.2 However nothing is working. I can't even browse the Internet after login into my ISP. Could somebody clarify what I'm doing wrong in this setting. [SuSE Linux] SuSE 6.1 and HP Deskjet 600

As rather new to Linux I just installed SuSE Linux 6.1 and I tried to istall my HP Deskjet 600 printer as printer for that distribution. As you don't have an entry for that printer I tried "deskjet". I am able to print, but as a result I get two pages printed on a A4 in landscape one besides the other. What did I do wrong and what do I have to change to be able to print in a normal way? [SuSE Linux] setting up local printer

Hello, I have indeed a lot of fun trying (hard) to become familiar with linux using suse 6.1, kde, wordperfect, gimp, gnome... while setting up my epson stylus color seems to be more difficult though! The command "pr /etc/printcap >/dev/lp0" gives me a nice printout on paper, showing me that the uniprint a4 color default driver has been configured for apsfilter. However, the kde printer control panel, as well as wordperfect printer panel remains completely blank, telling me that no printer has been installed?! So far the suse support data base has been a great help regarding drivers, kernel 2.2.xx, parport, etc. but it does not tell me what I need to do right now, so any help would be really appreciated. I returned the internal Zoom 2919L and got instead a 3Com USR 56K Faxmodem internal model 5687-03. I set the jumpers to Com1 and IRQ4 and swapped it in and it worked like a charm. Be aware that there are several flavors of USR 56k internal Faxmodems: 5687-00 5687-02 5687-03. You can tell the flavor by looking on the side of the box at the serial number. Model 5687-03 has jumpers. BUT, model 5687-02 does not! The 02 can still be configured with isapnp and I've done that with success on a dual boot machine.
