[SuSE Linux] Which Graphics Card ?

Hello Thanks to everyone for their opinions. Didn't realise that I was stirring up such a controversial argument. Latest news is that the motherboard that I've ordered (don't know the manufacturer) has an 8Mb on board video chip. The ones that I'm used to had a 1Mb chip. I'm thinking that this increased capacity will improve things considerably (in my experience it does). If it doesn't work I'll plug in a video card. [SuSE Linux] Happy SuSE-linux user!

Hi everybody, I just wanted to post a positive message, just to show that a newbie (the first time I touched a computer was only 6 months ago) can enjoy linux very much even though it's difficult for me to understand. Also I think it's normal that alot of things go wrong in the beginning, but I don't "whine" about it, I consider it being a result of my own ignorance, and not suSE's so-called lack of support. I must admit it's easier to post a message to this group if you have some problem than to go looking for the solution yourself. I try to avoid this though because I'm afraid to look silly on the list with 'stupid questions'. Linux is one big adventure-game for me, discovering new information every day, and it feels good just being a newbie, I guess it becomes boring when you know everything. (Sorry, it's only friday-noon and I'm getting all philosophical.) I think SuSE's great ! [SuSE Linux] MpegTV bad performance

Dear Friends, I am using Riva TNT, ( Creative ) in MPEGTV, I only get 17,x fps ( 1x size ) or < 10 fps in full screen mode. What happenned, I saw many friends, using less powerful cards, able to display 30 fps. Please help. [SuSE Linux] dhclient problems with cable modem

All, I am having a weird problem with the (default) configuration of the dhclient using SuSe linux 6.1 release with my cable modem on the @home network. When I use Windows98 my I.P. address is a type A IP address 24.X.X.X and my DNS addresses are on the same network 24.X.X.X. But when I bring up my eth0 interface, configured with the same information as I used in WinBlows, I get a type C address 193.X.X.X and I am unable to ping the DNS servers or any other host except my own machine. Does anyone have any clues as to what may be going on and what I would need to do to get it to configure properly? The interesting thing is that I had a Red Hat 5.X distribution upgraded to a 2.2.5 kernel before I got the SuSe upgrade and I had no problems. I was using an older version of dhcpcd version 0.70. Hi there... As a general rule of thumb I try to never put a CDROM device and a hard drive on the same IDE channel... throwback to old architecture which would slow the speed of the HD to that of the CD. Anyway, to give a bit of an answer to your problem: I noticed a similar problem on a friend's PC (Slackware, kernel 2.0.29) a while back. Similar HD setup as you have... we changed the Linux HD from secondary slave to primary slave (hdd to hdb), ran lilo and pointed the lilo config to hdb... voila, working system. I recall vaguely something about lilo not booting from second IDE channel... I thought this was just for older kernels though, and fixed in 2.2.x? [SuSE Linux] Error: Can't open display

Hi, I have just installed SuSE 6.1, and am using wvdial to access the internet. After connection, I look into /var/log/messages to find my dynamic IP address. Then I enter: DISPLAY= <dyn IP addr>:0 export DISPLAY So far, all the above was done in root. I then login as a user, and invoke startx (with the icewm window manager). Then I open an xterm, and again enter DISPLAY= <dyn IP addr>:0 export DISPLAY When I invoke netscape, I get the message Error: can't open display: <dyn IP addr> If I start Netscape from the icewm menu (right mouse button), it seems to be able to open the display, but then gives the message: Warning: following hosts are unknown home.netscape.com home6.netscape.com internic.net and then advises about maybe setting the $SOCKS_NC environment variable. Also, when I telnet to another computer (SGI, using tsch) and try to establish an X session, I get an error message when I invoke, on the remote computer, setenv DISPLAY=<dyn IP addr>:0 xterm -d <dyn IP addr>:0 Before switching to SuSE 6.1 from RH 5.0, I didn't run into these problems. RH was apparently setting something automatically which I must now do myself. I have tried to RTFMsss, but to no avail. Could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong, or not doing right. [SuSE Linux] How to mix the right cocktail of programs?

<DIV><FONT size=2>I have ver 6.0 and have been more than happy with it so far. I feel kind of like a desert nomad learning to swim, it's not hard but very diferent. What I am trying to do is set up a sever to provide IP Maquerading, POP3, Proxy and cacheing DNS on my home LAN. I have hit many a How-to and learned many a wonder but what I am looking for, I guess, is a general suggestion on how to put the peices together. A list of programs to try is all, I don't mind getting the hands dirty but there are A LOT of Linux programs out there.</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>These are the things I want to do:</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>1. Share internet over my LAN</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>2. Local mailserver, I am using a dialup connection and would like to cache incoming and outgoing email for when the connection is up</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>3. A cacheing proxy, this is mainly because the computer company I work for spent I-Don't-Know-How-Much on NT and BackOffice, I want to see if I can do it on a Espon 7500</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT size=2>4.
