[SuSE Linux] Odd runlevel problem

I'm in the process of hammering out a new installation and a whole lot of new issues are cropping up at once: 1) Switching from RH to SuSE 6, 2) Installing on a laptop, implying 2a) learning PCMCIA stuff and 2b) learning APM stuff. It's in regard to item 2) that I write. I was having system lockups every time I resumed from a suspend-to-RAM operation and among the things I read was a note that this is often a case of the PCMCIA having been compiled _not_ to use APM. I went to the PCMCIA website and grabbed the latest version of the PCMCIA utilities (3.0.9) and compiled/installed them -- for use with a supported Ethernet device. Now at bootup time, I see a very interesting phenomenon: when the PCMCIA subsystem is initialized, the networking fails, claiming that no such interface as eth0 exists. As near as I can tell from the bootup messages, this occurs between the 'pcmcia start' and the 'network start'. However, if I change my default runlevel from 2 to 1, boot, and then issue 'init 2' as root, everything works the way it did before I changed the PCMCIA stuff. Bearing in mind that I don't yet fully understand the "SuSE way" of configuring and booting -- and that I also don't fully understand the Linux PCMCIA utilities -- does anyone have any idea what I might need to change to fix this problem? If any system files or such are needed, I can certainly send them along but I don't want to guess and fill this message with useless information while risking leaving out what is actually needed. insert cd 1 use yast under load installation pick default installation then hit escape this will take you back to the main yast screen from there choose edit installation and scroll down the list of choices to commercial and hit enter. will should then see a list of the software choices you can choose from. scroll down to star office english. if it doesnt say staroffice50 then you can probably figure it out from the description at the bottom of the screen. when it is highlighted i think you hit the space bar. if your system needs other programs to be installed in addition to the package to make it work properly a screen will appear(dependencies) from their either manually check the files or simply choose auto which will automatically resolve these dependencies and from there you either press f10 or simply go back to the main yast screen and choose begin installation. after you have the uncompiled binary installed on your system you will have to compile it(convert from source code to binary) in order to use it. this is fortunately very easy just type sosetup when logged in as root. you will have to supply the code that came with your distribution(it should be on the white card that has your registration information. make sure you type in all caps or exactly as it appears. if you've lost it i am not sure if it is a generic number to all distributions or is specific for each distribution but i suspect that it is a generic code. you could probably get it on this list if it is the same for everyone. keep in mind that this is only a 30 day registration and you will have to connect to the stardivision site to get a code to use the program continuously. its in my opinion comparable to word perfect and definitely better than the applixware demo because you can only write one page with it. tony bible -----Original Message----- From: Ben <limbenny(a)pacific.net.sg> To: suse-linux-e(a)suse.com <suse-linux-e(a)suse.com> Date: Saturday, March 06, 1999 10:22 PM Subject: [SuSE Linux] Star Office 5 Installation > >Hi all > I am totally new to linux .. [SuSE Linux] compile errors

Hi, Has anyone noted any problems with the GNU C compile on SuSE 6.0? I've experienced som problems compiling apps such as kmysql, dbmetrix etc. I've checked and I do have all of the required packages installed. [SuSE Linux] Success!! Gnome 1.0.1 is there

I managed tonite to download all kinds of gnomeish stuff for the upgrade. I had some serious worry points with the self-compiled gtk/glib stuff. In fact, the rpms failed finding the libs. I had only three applications break because they were looking for libs from an earlier compilation. I got these sorted out tonite and have a working gnome 1.0.1 system basically intact. I managed to get two of the three apps working. If I want balsa I will have to recompile it appears. So thats my story and Im stuck with it. [SuSE Linux] Problems with SB PCI 128

Hi, I'm a new lurker of this list and a new user of Linux as well. Greetings to all of you! I've written 'cause I have a problem in making linux detect my Creative PCI 128 sound card. I have got SuSE 6.0. The full version of OSS (3.7.something) doesn't autodetect it, while the new demo version (3.9.something else) does, as an Ensoniq 3970 PCI card, if I remember well. But it refuses to work when I give 'soundon', 'cause I don't have the license file. I've compiled the 2.2.2 kernel, enabling sound module, and specifically the one of my chipset, but it still doesn't work. BTW, I don't know _how_ to ensure if the module works, since my suppositions are based on the fact that xmix and such programs say that they can't found hardware, or similar, there still isn't any sound card setup in YaST, and... I don't hear anything! So, -how can I ensure the kernel support works correctly? -must I buy the licence for OSS? I'm only a student , and I have troubles in gathering the money (oooh... what a sad story.. ;). BTW, SuSE shouldn't say it supports my card if one is compelled to pay additional bucks to get it work... -is there any other list member who resolved the same situation, or someone who can give advices? [SuSE Linux] Swapfile

Hi, newbie question:- Using SuSE 5.3/kernel 2.0.36 on an old box (586 100mhz,512mb hdd, 72Mb RAM). I set it up with a swapfile of only 32Mb because of space shortage. Watching resources using top I find that in order to use the swapfile i need to load 7 copies of Worperfect8 + 3 copies of Netscape4.5 + 5 xterms (all running xaos with the rotating palette option - to load up the CPU). My Q is is a swapfile really essential?????
