when I try to run a file such as "hello world" using gcc I compile using: "gcc -o hello hello.c" "chmod 777 hello" permissions now read "rwxrwxrwx hello" when I try to run "hello" I get the message "hello command not found" I have just done a full install of 5.1 on an intel 133mhz machine. This is a follow-up to my posts from a few weeks back. I was able to get RealAudio 3.0 (for a.out) working fine in SuSE 5.2, but with RealAudio 5.0 (for ELF), all I get is about 1.5 seconds of stream, then RealAudio locks up. Nearly all broadcast sites have upgraded to RealAudio 5.0, and 3.0 just won't work with them. Therefore, 5.0 is a necessity. I know many responded that they are having the same problem. Has anyone who previously had this problem managed to fix it? ----------------------------------------------- Man's mind is his basic tool of survival! Well, I finally am up with Linux .. I put in a 2nd 4.3 gig IDE drive in my Pentium 100. SuSE found the CD-ROM and booted. Thanks for the advice. Linux can't find my mouse .. a Logitech M-M35 .. this is a new type serial mouse .. a small OEM mouse. When I use YaST and goto Configure SFree86 the system stays on "applying ......." forever. Fortunately Linux uncleaned the drives after I "reset" my PC. Also I can't find a way to address my CD-ROM drive once I'm in Linux. What commands do I use? Just one other thing .. I wish IBM's AIX was this nice to work with. The history command with Linux is nice. I noticed two errors in the setup of a PPP configuration with yast under 5.2 (suseppp): The installation program copies the modem speed (entered with F4 by the user) only to /etc/suseppp/generic.options. However, this value should also be added to /etc/suseppp/diald/generic.diald. I use an ISDN external adapter with a modem speed of 115200, and without the value "speed 115200" in /etc/suseppp/diald/generic.diald I can't make a call. I believe the default for diald is 38400 which works for most people, but not in this case. To be on the safe side, always put the speed in generic.diald. Second problem: when specifying a server IP address in the PPP configuration for generic, the installation program writes a line "remote xx.xx.xx" to a file called /etc/suseppp/diald/generic which is wrong. It should add the line "remote xx.xx.xx" to the file /etc/suseppp/diald/generic.diald. Now diald complains that the remote address is missing. It seems the extension of the file is lost... When I try to invoke 'ppp-up generic' I get the error "Bad local IP address 127.0.0.1", and then nothing. Is there a cure for this? Hi, If this is a bit off subject for the list then I apologise, but as a potential Linux newbie with a M$95 ver. b box with a 32.bit FAT single partition HD it was important. Like I said before I am sure that Partition Magic is a great piece of software but if its your first venture into a new OS why layout 60/80$ to start? Dwight Johnson wrote..."There is no Linux utility that will make the cluster size smaller on a DOS or WIN95 partition and reclaim the space. Partition Magic is the only game in town." well that maybe true for linux but cvt.exe will do it for nothing and PM is not the only game in town..... To recap, 1. If your DOS/WIN95 partition is 16-bit FAT simply use FIPS (scandisk/defrag first) 2. If you have 16-bit FAT and are worried that you don't have sufficient space for a linux partition after using FIPS then you can convert your 16-bit FAT to 32-bit FAT non-destructively using the free M$ utility cvt.exe from <A HREF="http://www.dentalaw.com/freestuff"><A HREF="http://www.dentalaw.com/freestuff</A">http://www.dentalaw.com/freestuff</A</A>> ( this is NOT reversible ). On a "typical" single partition 1GB HD 16-bit FAT 32K clustersize this would free up about 150MB. 3. If your DOS/WIN95 partition is already 32-bit FAT simply use FIPS (scandisk/defrag first). In all cases it is better to turn off the win automatic virtual memory management ( swapfile ) otherwise FIPS might not find any free space as the swapfile tends to be at the end of the harddisk and defrag wont move it. 4. If for whatever reason you decide to backup and repartition/reformat the HD then the following undocumented switches for format and fdisk might be useful:- FDISK /FPRMT "normally" you cannot FDISK a FAT32 partition smaller than 512MB, with this switch you can. FORMAT /z:n the default clustersize for FAT16 is 32K and for FAT32 is 4K if you were desparate to get as much space as possible for an e.g. linux partition then you could FORMAT /z:n where n*512 = clustersize, on a large HD with millions of clusters there would be a performance degradation under WIN95 but as we are doing all this to get to grips with linux who cares :). Remember that all of the above only applies to ver OSR2 or later of WIN95. I have had Linux 5.2 now for a week and can't past YaST. I am trying to use an older 386 with 8M RAM and a 200 Meg HD. Is this possible? I had read an article on NT vs. Linux which lead me to think that Linux could do apps with a lot less machine. .. I have gotten a bunch of these, as I am sure anyone else who has made a post in the last 24 hours also has. Can we do anything about this user, it's either a bad address or his quota does not allow him to recieve the kind of traffic a mailing list produces.
