I neglected to mention that sometimes compiling sound as a module and isapnptools just aren't enough. Hi, I just installed SUSE 5.0 on a 486 DX4-100 with 8Mb ram and 200Mb HD. I want to recompile the kernel with minimum driver or support including my Gravis UltraSound MAX, but somehow it failed. I believe it is something wrong with the GUS MAX. Anyone using this sound card? And is there any special thing I have to take care before recompiling or is there any thing I have to enable in the kernel for it to work? Also, since the HD on that machine is very small, only 200Mb, what should I put on that machine? I put that machine up for my dad to surf the net so that the box has to have modem/tcp/ip support with Netscape. Does anyone tried to put stuff on a small machine like that? If so, what is the best package that I should install on it? Any advice will help. Yet, with a freashly compiled monolithic kernel ( linux -> linux-2.0.33.SuSE), it boots fine. No disk errors on boot up. It is fresh install of 5.2. What's wrong that lilo and the same kernel as the one on the floppy won't boot off the hardrive ? Hi everybody, I installed Suse 5.1 and Apache 1.2.5. The Apache does his job and I have installed virtuelle webs at once, but if I install the frontpage extentions 3.0, the installprogramm don t give me the virtuell webs I defind in the httpd.conf. At the place he named me the defined virtuell webs, he just count evaible virtuell webs, like this: 22) VirtWeb22 23) VirtWeb23 ... And so on. The principle is very easy: you put your "switch" in /etc/rc.config... like this: blah... # # Do you want to run my daemon ? # START_MYDAEMON="yes" then, you add your script in /sbin/init.d/ (copy /sbin/init.d/skeleton to /sbin/init.d/mydaemon and edit it) and you do this: # ... . /etc/rc.config if [ "$START_MYDAEMON" != "yes" ] then exit fi ... and put the proper commands under start and stop and the last step is... decide at which runlevel your script should be started... let's say 2 (because we assume it's a network daemon here ;-)) and, inside this runlevel, decide when it should be launched... like this: /sbin/init.d# ln -s mydaemon rc2.d/S80mydaemon /sbin/init.d# ln -s mydaemon rc2.d/K10mydaemon Like this, it'll be started almost at the end and it'll be killed almost at the beginning... you have to coordinate this with the other links in rc2.d/ It works like this: when you switch to runlevel 2, the rc script will execute every file linked in /sbin/init.d/rc2.d/ that starts with S (like Start), sorted (S01xxx will be run before S02xxx, ...), with "start" as argument when you switch down from runlevel 2, the rc script will execute every file linked in /sbin/init.d/rc2.d/ that starts with K (like Kill), sorted (K01xxx will be run before K02xxx, ...), with "stop" as argument Isn't that easy enough ? ;-) Pascal /nick SuSE52 on #linux (IRCnet) root on www.student.prov-liege.be -----Original Message----- From: Eduardo Romero <edo(a)ce2usm.valparaiso.cl> To: suse-linux-e(a)suse.com <suse-linux-e(a)suse.com> Date: mercredi 27 mai 1998 20:18 Subject: [S.u.S.E. I'm a newbie, but I recently installed SuSE 5.2 on one drive. Using fdisk and YaST I created partitions for /, /usr/ /opt, and /home as well as swap. I set / below the 1024 cylinder barrier. As I am alos running Debian and Red Hat and set up similar partitions with exception of /opt and share the swap partition. I'm guessing, but I would think similar set up across multiple drives would be called for; selecting the particular parition for the respective dev. Yours is arrogant and VERY rude for the SuSE people. When i started on linux, i didn't know anything about this OS but i found most of the things i needed in the documentation, reading it carefully. It should be even easier for you since english seems to be your native language! For the few problems i had left, i simply asked for answers in the right newsgroup or mailing list and the day after, my linux box was working perfectly. People will always help you even if your question seems very basic to them (i experimented this !) but you have to ask them CORRECTLY. X crashed and now whenever I bring up X, everything is in German. I have tried reconfiguring in YaST (LANGUAGE=english, which it was already, but I redid it) and rebooting but I can't shake it loose.
