I have had Linux 5.2 now for a week and can't past YaST. I am trying to use an older 386 with 8M RAM and a 200 Meg HD. Is this possible? I had read an article on NT vs. Linux which lead me to think that Linux could do apps with a lot less machine. .. This may be true for all beginners, except absolute newbies, who often find installation highly problematic. To quote from amazon.com's review of this book: "Ball's coverage of installation is rather weak, through paying only cursory attention to this confusing process." --- My web site kicks (but never licks) butt! <A HREF="http://ezekielk.simplenet.com/"><A HREF="http://ezekielk.simplenet.com/</A">http://ezekielk.simplenet.com/ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

It takes some experience to know what to put into a Linux box with only 200MB HD. And the normal SuSE install is vastly bigger. Take a look at the IronWing distribution. Its standard install is only 25MB--of course, don't expect X. Since it runs on a DOS filesystem, you can even it make it co-exist with an MS-DOS, Win3.1 or Win95 installation. IronWing has a lot of neat networking stuff in it and it will give you a real Linux to get your feet wet with. Of course, someone may show up and give you a list of the exact packages you need to install to get going in 200MB with SuSE. In that case, go ahead with SuSE. It can be done, if you know what you are doing. I have Red Hat 5.0 installed on a 100MB HD 386--no X, but I have *all* the neat networking stuff. It's a great little box. It's a ton of fun to work with small boxes. The URL for IronWing is: <A HREF="http://www.lizard.org/dragonlinux/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.lizard.org/dragonlinux/index.html</A">http://www.lizard.org/dragonlinux/index.html If this box is your only machine, and you are used to MS-DOS/ Windows, you should definitely consider it as you will need to keep using MS-DOS/Windows for some time while you learn Linux. Exactly- you have "a lot less machine." linux doesn't pacify you with neat screens to show you what it's doing; it uses those resources to work even faster. you have a 386, so give it time, perhaps 10 minutes. we have a suse box at work that took over two days to compile a kernel, so don't worry.

yeah, but do you have to stop your car to signal with linux?

I realise I'm not addressing your specific problem. But in general, Linux will run fine on your machine. However, many distributions (I'm new to SuSE, but I know a little about RH) need more space than that to do their "user-friendly" magic. In other words, you pay for the user-friendly aspect by needing a slightly more powerful machine. This usually applies only to the installation procedure. Not to the actual run of the machine after it is installed. As someone explained (on colm), this is because, during installing, these distributions need to create a "ramdisk" out of main memory on which they create their "root" file system. Then things like YaST will run. A less user-friendly distribution may work in this case - although I hesitate to say so on a SuSE mailing list. (I'm sure they'll forgive me!) You also didnt say what the exact problem is you are seeing. That might help get a more focused response from someone here. On Thu, 28 May 1998, Mitch Appleby wrote:

I have a Linux 5.0 running on a 386/8MB (without X graphical interface), but for this I had to compile a new kernel doing math processor emulation (one of the first options when compiling a new kernel -> look in the manual). Herbert

I am another 'clueless newbie'. A month ago I got an old laptop 286 and since then I'm wondering if there is any chance to put Linux on it.I'd love it!! Not gonna happen. the 286 is a 16 bit chip. linux is a 32 bit os.

Try either minix or xenix, to my knowledge either will run on a 286. Aaron Seelye wrote:

QNX isn't unix. i've talked to a guy who uses it for a living, and it just looks like
unix on the surface, but when you get into it, it really isn't.

Well, there is the ELKS project (<A HREF="http://www.uk.linux.org/ELKS-Home/"><A HREF="http://www.uk.linux.org/ELKS-Home/</A">http://www.uk.linux.org/ELKS-Home/), but it is definitely 'expert only': "ELKS is intended as a subset of true Linux, and ought to be small enough to be understood by one person, so it should be invaluable as a learning tool. It is in the very early stages of development, and big chunks are missing, such as swapping, shared libraries, parallel and serial I/O, and networking. Having said that, it is already able to boot, provide virtual consoles, mount a root minix filesystems floppy, and start various small programs." (says the FAQ, from 1 month ago) However, if you want to sink a lot of time and learn a lot about kernels, 80x86 processors (x=0..2), C, etc. go ahead, but it it a most stony road and support will be sporadic if at all. Do it if you really love that kind of stuff. Else, better abstain or you'll be severely disappointed. Minix was suggested, but is for research and educational use only. And there are other drawbacks. -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If you've nothing at all to hide, you must be boring. Not linux, but minix. I do not have a URL but a search engine will show you many on the Internet. Dwight -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
I brought my Unix teachers laptop to my Linux group and she had only 4mg's of ram and no CD. All the installs we tried needed some more ram BUT there is a version called HAL-91, it's a 1-floppy version of Linux and we had it going in fine BUT the laptop didn't have a math co-processer in it, we could have re-compiled HAL-91 with it but we ran out of time, it would not have been a good representation of Linux anyway with such little ram. It was a 486-33. At 08:58 PM 5/30/98 +0300, you wrote:
