In order to learn about the differences in the different distributions I have loaded and worked four types of Linux. With two I have been unable to get gcc to link files. Can anyone tell me what libraries or files are needed by gcc to link files. I think this may be the problem? Suse worked fine but redhat 4.2, 5.0 and Caldera all failed to compile and link. I ran them on a P150 cpu, if that helps and loaded everything on the CDs. Except for ppp and Netscape I really think suse is the way to go. PPP is now one but I still cannot get Netscape to find the modem. [S.u.S.E. Linux] SCSI-2 Controllers

I'm about to go from a 486 to a Pentium II with a 400MHz chip and a 100MHz bus. For technical reasons am getting one of the new Adaptec Ultra2 controllers. Yes, I know it will probably be a good while before this card is supported. Therefore, until it is, I'm going to run linux on an external hard disk. I will have 4 external peripherals: 2 hard disks, a scanner, and a CDR. All are SCSI-2. So I'm planning to get a second controller to run these devices until linux supports the Adaptec Ultra2. My first thought was to go BusLogic. However, I'd be forced to buy a very expensive one because of compatibility issues with new mother boards. So, does anyone have any suggestions as to a suitable controller which wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg? Again, it doesn't have to handle anything beyond SCSI-2. [S.u.S.E. Linux] Installing to a DK440LX SCSI system

After throwing up my hands at Red Hat 5 (CD didn't have the drivers to recognize the AIC-7895 on this motherboard), I have ordered the latest SuSE distribution with high hopes. Here is the setup: Intel DK440LX, 9 GB SCSI hard disc, SCSI CD-ROM drive The first 4 GB of the drive are currently an NTFS partition on which I have installed Windows NT. The rest of the disc is where I plan to install Linux. I have a few questions before I dive into this... Can anyone tell me with certainty if the 5.2 distribution will recognize my SCSI controller? Will I be able to boot from the CD to install? Will the kernel that ships with 5.2 mount an NTFS partition? I'd really perfer not to create any extraneous FAT partition just to get the thing working right--will I be able to avoid that? What sort of incantations will I have to perform to get multiple boot between the two OSes working? I'm also using a Permedia2-based graphics card (this is another thing that pushed me toward SuSE)... Anything I should know about setting up the X server for this board (specifically, it's a Hercules Dynamite 3D/GL)? Prismatic Booger Braden N. Hubert, Peter & Darren, Since you Hubert and Peter answered my most important questions and since the delay is due to SuSE's presence on the Comdex - I bet your OS didn't block when you connected a scanner to it - I don't see a reason to postpone further the buy of SuSE's Linux distribution. I've been trying to run OSS to configure my Ensonique AudioPCI soundcard, but I get the following error messages on ". /oss-install" rmmod soundbase device loaded or in use rmmod soundshield device loaded or in use OSS driver is already loaded ./soundconf: line 111: 1074 Segmentation fault. Use soundoff to unload it and try again. Of course, executing soundoff has no effect, because no OSS driver is loaded at this point. I'm using the current, Webpage version of OSS (*not* the version shipped with 5.2) because it supports Ensonique AudioPCI. I've also installed all the packages in the sound section (midi support, etc) -- perhaps I should delete these packages and try again. Any solutions or ideas from anybody, or from Bodo, et. al. ? Hello, I'm a new user of S.U.S.E 5.2. My computer don't have a 'normal' floppy but a LS-120. Then when the installation is completed how to create a boot on my LS-120 to let reboot on this fresh new install ? Or at least is it possible to re-boot on my CD and to specify to boot on my Linux partition ?
