Hey everyone, I'm having trouble setting up a NIS server on SuSE Linux 5.1...I've been using the NIS HowTO and the yp commands in O'Reilly's Linux in a Nutshell. Both refer to a ypinit command I cannot find. I found a ypmake command that which sounds like it should do what ypinit does, make the map databases. Has anyone got an NIS server up on 5.1 and, if so, how? >From the man page for fvwm95: First, fvwm95 will search for a file named .fvwm95rc...in the users home directory. Failing that, it will look for /usr/lib/X11/fvwm95/system.fvwm95rc for system-wide defaults. If that file is not found, fvwm95 will be basically useless. I think there's another one, however, if you use SuSEconfig to configure window managers. It's at /usr/lib/X11/fvwm95/.fvwm95rc. Now... if you don't use fvm95, I"m sure the files are similar. For getting the box to answer the phone and allow a login, edit your /etc/inittab file. Near the bottom of the page is a line commented out like this: # modem getty. # mo:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty -s 38400 modem if you uncomment the "mo:23:respawn....." line, your computer will answer the phone and allow the user to login normally. There are also lines pertaining to fax and voice, but I have not yet played with those. I agree with this synopsis. I was asked to compare and rate RedHat 5.0 and S.u.S.E. Linux 5.1 for some individuals I work with as what Linux is better and to find an good alternative for Win95. These individuals had heard much about RedHat 5.0 in the press, however I was a bit more skeptical and got a free machine to test RedHat 5.0. For fairness, I also reloaded from S.u.S.E 5.1 from scratch. I tried to be as impartial as possible (hard, since I've used 5.1 since December) however, the problems I had with recompling kernel modules and other things with glibc on RedHat just weren't there with SuSE. Plus, I hate not having YaST. It is diffcult to do any configurations quickly on RedHat before you get X set up and have access to Glint. Here is where I need YaSt the most, in the initial set up after the install. RedHat just don't have it. However, I can deal with that. What i can't deal with is program that won't compile right or run properly because of the libraries. It would be nice if glibc would be all that it is promised, however I think RedHat's decision to switch at such a time was a bad one. I think to myself, the press just raved about RH 5.0, however, what would they have said if they saw a more stable Linux? I know that I covinced others from getting RH 5.0 and to think seriously about SuSE just by presentation. If glibc is going to be used, make sure it is stable...because now, i think it is a pain. If you want to change the email option, you can search for a string like pine. I found it handy to change the default mailer that comes up with the mail notifier also by editing the string line for coolmail in the button bar. You can also add more menu options on the menu you get when left clicking on the desktop by adding additional programs, separating them with lines, etc. I also commented out the fvwmbutton bar in .fvwm2rc and use tkdesk instead. I found it easier to add icons and programs to tkdesk. Open an xterm and type "tkdesk" or "tkdesk &" and see if you like it. I've recently used both Redhat 5.0 (only for a bit) and Debian hamm. I would agree that glibc isn't ready for prime time just yet, but hopefully will be by this summer.
