[SuSE Linux] Colour depth question

I have been running X at a colour depth of 24bpp with only one problem. All the icons in Netscape were rendering as very low resolution monochrome images. I never made the association to the colour depth until last night when I installed WordPerfect 8. All the images in the GUI install wizard rendered as a weird looking cross-hatch pattern. This didn't hinder the install in any way and I figured it may just be a glitch in the install. However when I started xwp, the splash screen, the image in the top box and all the toolbar icons were the same. At this point I started thinking of colour depth and switched to 8bpp. Now wp and ns rendered their images perfectly but overall resolution was too poor. Switched to 16bpp and everything now looks great. Why would these images render correctly at 16bpp but not at 24bpp? I have always use TrueColor (24bpp) on Windows and NT and have never seen images render incorrectly. What is different about these images that would cause this? [SuSE Linux] Simple Time Client?

I'm still struggling... I have xntp compiled and apparently running on my work pc, but am behind a gauntlet firewall. The firewall pc is itself running xntp, and from NT I can use an SNTP client to get the time from it without problems. However, If I run ntpdate on my pc under SuSE 5.3 and give the firewall as the host, I get an error message saying it can find no timeserver... Is there such a thing as an SNTP client (Simple Network Time protocol) available for Linux?? Otherwise - I'm faced with having to install a modem and configure ppp to dial into my isp just so that I can set the damn system clock.... sigh... Hello All. as SuSE 6 is approaching, I don't want to install SO5 for nothing. Is there any particular way to install it so that it will stay working ok after going SuSE 6 (I'm now using 5.3f)? thanks for tips. Jean-Michel

Everything had worked well and I compiled a new kernel. I compiled the kernel with network support but still without network card (loopback). How to install this program? g++ is the C++ compiler and is not installed by default. You will find it in the development tools section in YaST. After installing it you should be able to compile wvdial without any problems. I get also a "libstdc++.so.2.9 not found" when I run wvdial (I downloaded the libc5 version from ftp.suse.com) Then I downloaded the source code version. But I'm a newbie and I don't know exactly where to install it and what to do with it. I installed the tar.gz file with yast and I tried "make" but I have "/bin/sh: g++: command not found". I understand nothing. How to install this program?
