Wireless PCMCIA in a Desktop: Will Linux Recognize it?

I would be thankful for answers to some questions: about wireless cards 1) Re: Wireless Ethernet Cards for Desktops. How does one get Linux to recognize an ethernet card (e.g. a wireless card) that is not on the list of supported cards shown by YAST2? 2) Re: Installing a PCMCIA card onto a Desktop. I understand that one can install a wireless PCMCIA ethernet card in a desktop with the appropriate PCI card. Is there any problem with Linux's recognizing the card under these circumstances? Under Linux 8.0, is there any problem with recognition and use of a wireless PCMCIA? I read the relevant HowTo, but that installed under Debian and I think (guess) an older kernel. (Newbie alert) Zip drive confusion.

Hi all, I have just tried to access my USB 250 Zip drive in SUSE 7.3 Pro, only to receive the following message: "Could not mount device. The reported error was mount /dev/sda4: unknown device." I have checked and ziptool is installed, I have a Zip icon on my desktop, but obviously, something needs to be configured somewhere. I read /usr/share/doc/packages/ziptool/README, but there wasn't any help as far as I could decipher. Any ideas? Cheers, Brian

Hi, Last night i posted message asking on help to aviod my system shutdown by it self. Well put statement suggested in lilo.con in the appriate localtion suggested but jut know the system in question just power off again for no good reason. I am running SuSe 7.1 Kernel 2.4.13 Mantel RPM. 512 MB RAM 10 GB (ReiserFS / ext2 /boot) Matorx Millimum 2 MB (It's work machine ) D-Link 538 TX+ 10/100 MB What noticed this occurs when memory drop below 350 MB the system shutdown when i am going in to X/Gnome. What i find strange is i am running RH 7.1 + Kernel 2.4.13 Kernel.org with exact same MB/RAM/HD/NIC etc.. and all it well with it. I have had this problems since kernel 2.4.0 . I have checked RAM with memtest and it check out i have switched ram from RH 7.1 Box with this one done memory test as well it check out but still occurs. I have always love SuSe but seriously thinking of calling it quit's with this distro. I never any problems with other distro/kernels acting like this. Any ideas :) Alex :)

[SLE] Hard Drive follies

I upgraded my system and along with the new board, processor, memory, and all that I bought a 30 gig hard drive. I could not get fdisk to see more than 7.9 gigs of it, even though I did all the standard things like flash the bios, use the installation diskette from the manufacturer, etc. The only way I was able to partition the drive was to use the Windows 95 fdisk, with all its limitations including the one from marketing which limits to one primary partition per drive. Eventually I partitioned a 15 gig primary and a 15 gig extended, then changed the type, formatted and gave mount points in YaST. Now there is a 15 gig primary, a Windows extended, with a Linux logical as the only partition there. Cripes. [SLE] sound problems

allo I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. I am using SuSE 6.2 and have compiled OSS and SB16 drivers into my kernel (2.2.14pre15) I can play mp3's fine but not CDs I have tried using a mixer to mute and then un-mute the CD player - to no effect I have used different CD playing software, cdp and workman. Neither worked. The CD is read and actually played by both aps but no sound comes out of the speakers. I used to be able to play CDs back in the days of Win32 (ugh) - so I knwo that it is possible. I just plugged some headphones into the cdrom and I can certainly hear the funky tunes pouring out of the cd player but nothing gets to the speakers... the little grey cable that connects the audio out to the soudn card is well and truly ther and it works fine under Win32 as I said... hope this helps to solve the prob.. -A Abhinav Keswani wrote: > > allo > > I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. Clock skewed

Hi all When I try to recompile the kernel I get a message saying the clock is skewed and the build may not work. What does this mean and how can I fix it ? I am running SuSe 6.1 with kernel 2.2.5. Thanks Mike

[SuSE Linux] Call-back with SuSE 6.1

Hi, everybody I'm new to Linux. Installed SuSE a couple of weeks ago and now trying to get some functionality. I have trouble setting up call-back (SuSe 6.1<---> ISP's NT Server 4.0) with optional number (fixed as well). Tried to use wvdial, but with no success (it dials OK, but then seems like doesn't know what to do next). Can it do the trick? I feel that maybe some scripting could help me. Could anybody provide me with necessary directions (or direct to the information) for making a flexible script and what software I need installed or some other approach? (I've read PPP-HOWTO but don't know if the information it contains applicable to current SuSE version; it doesn't say anything about wvdial). One more thing. Is it necessary to set the proper values in "resolv.conf" and host.conf? Some other files? I actually tried to find the answer and found a sample ppp.conf with brief instructions on settings (from Free-BSD as I remember), but can I use it with SuSE 6.1 and how? Hi people. I finally got ppp-up(thru yast) and masquerading to work. I just have three more things to solve before being HAPPY with it. 1. Right now, only root can start the connection. How can I let ALL users dial out? (the permission stuff, and which files?) 2. How can I define my own set of modem init strings? (which file) 3. Where and how can i set the MTU? Currently set to 1500, but I would like to make it lower. Anybody have suggestions on the best MTU settings for a 56K modem? I have a uds-11 scsi card tha came with a Umax scanner. I don't have the scanner (someone gave the card to me), but I have a CD-burner that i want to connect to it. I don't know anything about this card, and can't get any info from Umax's web site. [SuSE Linux] beta version does not load

Hi, I am trying to load the beta version on a somewhat older Toshiba T2130CT notebook computer. So far, I have successfully cut the old Windows95 partition down to 176 MB leaving about 350 MB free for the Linux partition. I also prepared the disks according to Bodo Bauer's message of Dec. 3rd. I boot from the eide01 disk image and YaST comes up. Then I proceed to load version 6.0 via ftp. It successfully pulls some files over from ftp.suse.com and reports that it has got them alright. Then the next screen comes up and says `An error occured during installation' and brings me back to the Start installation menu. Can anybody help me over this hurdle? Is there a way to make YaST to tell what exactly it is that went wrong? Do I have the wrong disk image? Any help is highly appreciated. You can change the double click speed by inserting this line into .Xdefaults: wm_name*doubleClickTime: 500 and restarting the X 500 is just the number of millisecs. You can make it anything you want. [SuSE Linux] Video RAM vs.System RAM and Ifconfig reporting only 10mps on 100mps NIC's

Hi everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Well, I just upgraded my network to 100baseTx. WOW! What a difference it made! I used all Linksys products: 8 port dual speed hub; 10/100 PCI NIC's. I have set up one system as an X-Server using KDM login and two systems as X-Terminals. The server runs on a 266 Mhz AMD K-6 with 128 Megs and two WD Caviar 6.4's. The terminals are AMD P-90 and Cyrix PR-200 with 16 and 32 Megs, Seagate 1 Gig and Caviar 2 Gigs. Video is S3 Virge and Riva 128, each with 4 Megs. The server runs the onboard SiS, and using the latest SVGA from XFree86 3.3.3, it works fairly well. All machines run at 1280x1024 16 Bit. I am also running X-WinPro 5.0 on top of "98" on another machine. Nice package. -- The X-WinPro, that is. ;-) The server also provides SAMBA disk services to the "98" machine as well as makes use of its NEC (Windows only --GAK!) laser, and intranet web services via APACHE. Linux is the best thing since sliced bread! And, SuSE is the butter on that bread! Having worked with Linux regularly for only about a year, I know I have lots yet to learn. But, I hope to make the terminals completely diskless, or at least only with a floppy, in the near future. As it stands, they have a roughly minimal SuSE installation. Setting up the terminals via the server's CD-ROM using NFS was a snap. I have experimented with trying to find the optimal amount of RAM for the terminals using DIMM's I had handy. I started with 8 Megs which proved too little -- lots of swapping. Now, one has 16 and the other 32. Both seem to work fine. I suppose I was under the mistaken impression that system RAM was not that important once X was loaded. I would greatly appreciate someone explaining to me why? Would, for instance, more RAM on the video cards make less system RAM be needed since we are dealing with only terminals which run nothing but the X server locally? Being diskless excludes, of course, using a swap partition. Now all of that said, here is my main question. Why does ifconfig report the NIC's as running at only 10mps? There is no doubt that the cards are linked at 100mps. Their greatly increased performance over 10mps is obvious. And, of course, the indicator lights on the cards and the hub show they are linked at 100mps. I downloaded and made the latest tulip module from Donald Becker's NASA CEDIS site. It is v.90 and is definitely being loaded on bootup. I have tried several different options in modules.conf -"100baseTx" etc. Valid options are listed in the the makefile. Where does the 100mps actually take place? Is it solely on the, what I would call, hardware side? I mean from NIC > hub > NIC. Or, does the module driver play a role in actual data throughput? Simply put, does the module influence performance and if it does, how do I get it to run at 100mps? Thanks a Million for any Help! :-) -- D. R. [SuSE Linux] SaX dies shortly after startup without error message

Hi, I'm trying to run SaX, It starts up saying "probing PCI bus", "using VGA16" server, X starts (the black & white hatched screen), then a black screen with the SuSE logo in the upper right hand corner appears, then I get dumped out back to the command line. No errors (just the "probe" and "vga16" messages), no SaX window. I'm running SuSE 5.3. I've tried both PCI and ISA based video cards. I've installed all X servers. I've been able to configure X sucessfully via XF86Setup, and still can't run SaX from the console command line nor X (same behavior from both). I'm guessing that something was not installed (or not installed correctly) that's needed by SaX. Is there a way to determine if all components needed for SaX were installed? Any idea how to debug this (or what may cause this problem)? [SuSE Linux] libtools and alsamixer

Hello, Does anyone know if GNU libtools are available at the SuSE ftp site or included in the SuSE distribution, and, if so, in what package? I searched my installation and CD (Infomagic 6-CD set with SuSE 5.1 on one cd) but couldn't find them. I just installed the alsa-driver for my Creative Ensoniq soundcard (ES1371). It appears to have installed correctly, and detects the card, but the output is muted by default so I'm trying to install the alsamixer from the alsa-utils-0.0.8 package. I need to install the alsa-libs first and apparently need libtools to do so. Anyone have experience with compiling alsa-utils or the alsa-libs-0.1.3.tar.gz package? (kmixer (and my kscd player) from KDE Beta 4.0 got "broken" somehow at sometime and since I've read that not all mixers work with the alsa-driver I figure it makes more sense to spend my time getting the alsa-utils installed.) Hi, Could someone please just give me a little help here. I got samba up and running from a simple installation. Was able to copy and delete files from Win --> Linux, everything worked find. Shut down the computer, went to bed, got up this morning and smbd -D worked, but not nmbd -D. Both are started by hand. Checked /etc/log/log.nmb and found the following: "12/30/1998 09:26:44 netbios nameserver version 1.9.18p4 started Copyright Andrew Tridgell 1994-1997 bind failed on port 137 socket_addr=192.168.0.2 (Cannot assign requested address) make_subnet: Failed to open nmb socket on interface 196.168.0.2 for port 137. [SuSE Linux] libstdc++.so.2.8 and xplorer

Hi- I've just tried to install xplorer /a w*ndows explorer clone/ from their site I dl'd their rpm /which is made for redhat/ after using yast to install the rpm I tried to run and get this error cant load libstdc++.so.2.8 ok I checked /usr/i486-linux-libc6/lib/* there is no libstdc++.so.2.8 so i made a link from libstdc++.so.2.7.2.8 and got the same error msg then I tried a link from libstdc++.so.2.9 that failed also. Do I need and updated libary? Hi, My mouse works nice in X except for one thing. When I need to select directories, in some select-file dialog box, I often have to "go up" by clicking on the ".." The timing of these clicks has to be very fast, so that I must taken my hand off of the mouse, and send 2 quick clicks with 1 finger, like a morse code signal. Hi guys, Could someone help me out? I get a "network unreachable" whenever I try to connect on the network. I have a 3Com Etherlink card and I once had a network connection successfully connect to another computer but since my new installation I get this error. I tried to recompile my kernel so that I can make sure drivers for my card are available in the kernel but now the system hangs at boot time. I will just select one of the precompiled kernels again but how do I get a network connection? I think I have everything configured right. [SuSE Linux] ATI mach 64?

I just picked up a 2 meg pci ATI mach 64 card, installed the mach 64 server, ran xf86config to direct it to the new server... no problem. problem---> I seem to have lost about 1 inch from the top of my monitor and a little from the bottom! the resolution is640x480 800x600 1024x1024 all the same for 8bpp/16/24/32 The previous setup was an onboard card (this is on a compaq deskpro p90) with Im assuming 1M ram the difference in resolution is *slight* compared to my onboard setup I was told that a 2M would be more than adequate for web browsing, xgames etc, but the difference is minimal and Im not really happy about loosing an inch from my screen... did I miss something in the configuration? Hello, Seeking an alternative to RH I've converted to SuSE, however there's some things that are lacking; hopefully it's just that I don't know where to look. First off, can SuSE use RedHat RPMs (that is, the RPMs @ RH's site, and general RPMs like those for korganizer)? Second, I can't seem to find a main list of RPMs @ SuSE's site, does such a list exist (not just RPMs in the main distribution, but also for other software programs)? Third, I appreciate the fact that YaST can be used in character mode, however a GUI equivalent would sure be nice. This is a common problem when using windows95. It ONLY uses filenames to guess what kind of file something is, and *.rpm just happens to mean a RealPlayerModule (if the RealPlayer is installed) The solution is to use a ftp program, or download instead of opening in Netscape/IE/whatever (usually shift+click or right-click->save-as will do the trick) If you have the full adress of a file on ftp, just write it without the /matrox.rpm, then you can select it from the file list in your browser. regards Ole On Tue, 29 Dec 1998, Yatsen Ng wrote: > > I tried to download the matrox.rpm from the SuSE ftp site but didn't quite > succeed in doing so. Has anyone managed to get Weitse Venema's (sp?) [SuSE Linux] Boot disk format?

What details do I need to know to be able to mount the Suse boot disk? I tried minix and ext2 as the filesystems, but it cannot mount it. I want to experiment with replacing the kernel with a custom one...don't ask why! Again, I mean the install disk that comes with it, not the one you create with yast. Not really. 2.2.0-pre2 (I think) has been released. If you follow the kernel mailing list, there is still A LOT of discussion about what fixes need to be in before it can be called '2.2.0', although it is proceeding down this path. I have a similar need, but I wouldn't trust a ext2 utility under dos. It is better to use a dos partition as a shared partition, and that can be accessed under both NT and linux. The beta version of partition magic managed to resize my Linux ext2 partition without any problems!! [SuSE Linux] YAST won't die in 5.2, I need help

I have been trying to work with SuSE 5.2 off of one cd I got some time back from Cheapbytes. This is a personal challenge, as I am installing it on some computers at the university, and want to setup as much as possible on my own... Everytime I install it, apparently successfully, the init messages scroll by, as normal, then YAST starts up again with the message "Probably didn't finish configuring, so YAST will start up anyway ; )" then I go into YAST, and it prompts for the installation media, blah blah blah. If I abort, I can continue loading Linux, and everything is fine... In this second case, I think I should point out that I am having problems with LILO, but I figured out what that was, and will reinstall Linux SuSE 5.2 again tomorrow, but, I still want to know WHY WON'T YAST DIE!?!?!? What message do you get when it hangs? Try loading network card support as a module. If you have dos or Windows try a programe that came with the card and test the IRQ's. [SuSE Linux] KDE Question

If, on the KDE desktop, you right click, you get a menu. Suppose from this menu you select 'Execute command'. You get a command line. Is there a clever way to call functions from this command line? How about execute aliases? The error messages are smaller now. In XMessages, it says," invalid command name "debug" While executing "debug" invoked from within "set tkmail [debug]..." (file "/usr/X11R6/bin/tkmail" line 20" I tried to set it up to debug, but I guess I screwed up on that one. Live and learn.
