[SuSE Linux] eth0 (network unreachable)
Hi guys, Could someone help me out? I get a "network unreachable" whenever I try to connect on the network. I have a 3Com Etherlink card and I once had a network connection successfully connect to another computer but since my new installation I get this error. I tried to recompile my kernel so that I can make sure drivers for my card are available in the kernel but now the system hangs at boot time. I will just select one of the precompiled kernels again but how do I get a network connection? I think I have everything configured right. Thanks in advance for your help. -t --------------------------------------------------- Get free personalized email at <A HREF="http://www.iname.com</A">http://www.iname.com - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/ and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html

Ummm youre not really giving enough info on what you've tried. Did you use yast>system admin>intergrate hardware>configure networking device? and yast>system admin>network configuration>network base configuration>giving it an ip address of *your*choice.. in the class C range 192.xxx.xx.x or under? are you back to using a stock kernel (which should be fine) What kind of machine are you networking with? We need a little more information... ;-) rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/ and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html

There are a lot of possibilities. Try the following checks:
1. Enter the command "ifconfig". As well as "lo" and "dummy0" you should
also see an "eth0". If you don't, then the ethernet driver was not
started up successfully for your card.
2. Enter the command "route". You should again see, under the last column
("Iface"), "lo", "dummy0" and "eth0". If "eth0" is missing, then the
"route add ... " command failed on initialisation.
3. Try "ping localhost" and "ping nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn" where "nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn"
is the numeric IP address of the machine you are at.
The above are basic tests that the local hardware and software are
working. If they pass, then have a look at the other machine. Is it, for
instance, on the same net (e.g. "192.168.0.0" or whatever the network IP
address is) as the local machine? If not, are the gateways OK? Etc.
Good luck,
Ted.

The last time I got that error was because even though I had the kernel configured correctly for my network card (ne2000), the problem was with my cdrom card (I had a old mitsumi) The problem was that the CDcard would grab the irq the network card was using before it had a chance. Take a look at /var/log/boot.msg and it will tell you what drivers were loaded and if a Irq was used, which one it was. You may have to change a few numbers around to get everything to work correctly:-) -- cya l8r Leon McClatchey leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Linux User 78912 (Win95 Box) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/ and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html

Read the NET-3-HOWTO. I had the very same problem and after reading the howto, fixed it in three commands. These are the commands that made it work are: root# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 up root# route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0 root# route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0 If your inet connection is through ppp, omit the last one and use a suitable one for ppp (also in the howto). lunaslide * PGP key->pgpkeys.mit.edu port 11371 * * * * * * Lisp has all the visual appeal of oatmeal with fingernail clippings mixed in. Hello once again fellow Linux users.......... I am becoming increasingly serious about Linux...... What I mean is that, after using it now for 3 consecutive weeks, I see it as a viable alternative to Win95. To put it in a nutshell......I am now considering using Linux as my primary OS. Of course I will have 95 on another partition and will dual boot on some occasions........ Now...... I need MAJOR MAJOR help from anyone on a one 2 one basis. Since I am new to the Linux Realm.....I want help on how to protect my system from the outside. I want help on how to disable HTTP, NEWS, POP3 services, and remote login. I do however want to keep FTP, because I need to share files with certain individuals. So I would be EXTREMELY happy if someone contacted me on my real e-mail address (zulfiqar@shaw.wave.ca) and instruct me on how to make my system 'bulletproof'. On another note......I want to thank all of you for being most excellent chaps!! All of you are very amicable and very patient. Try KXicq, note that you'll need to upgrade your QT to 1.41 vs 1.33 which is installed with SuSE 5.3 by default. <A HREF="http://www.caiw.nl/~herwinjs/</A">http://www.caiw.nl/~herwinjs/ Dana -- dlaude@execpc.com Dana J. For a start edit, your /etc/inetd.conf. Place # in front of all the services that you do not want. Edit your /etc/hosts.allow, and /etc/hosts.deny. A good way is to deny everyone in hosts.deny. And place the hosts you want to allow in hosts.allow. To start, do a man inted, man hosts.allow, and man hosts.deny. I think those last two mans are the same. After the changes, reboot. There is a utility under KDE which allows root to alter the run level table. You can take apache, ftpd and all that stuff out there. I fail to recal the name, but look for something like run level editor or something.

Under YaST, in system administration, you can set the security level from easy to secure. This is a start. To really be up to date on security problems in linux, check the securioty sites often. Those that spring to mind are: www.antionline.com www.l0pht.com www.rootshell.com www.iss.com You can find other links from there. Download, read and *understand* the SATAN program.
