Steven Thanks, yes I did eventually copy the system xinitrc over because I didn't have one. SuSE didn't copy one over by default. Its funny I was going in and out of X a lot and just happened to remember .xinitrc. When I saw I didn't have it is when I copied over the Slackware version which, as you said, the paths were incorrect. It took another post to make me think enough to go look for the system file. James Thanks. Your post made me think about xinitrc and I found that the one from Slackware had different paths to sysresources & sysmodmap! I should have checked that before. I copied over the system xinitrc, modified it and now all is well. On that WINDOWMANAGER export you mentioned, logging out & back in won't change it. A reboot does but better yet I find that running SuSEconfig does log in the change to /etc/profile. Then a log out/in does find the $WINDOWMANAGER OK. Your solution is much better tho. Leave profile alone and just use your .xinitrc. I wouldn't have even looked at profile if MY OLD(!!) .xinitrc had worked. Thanks! Wayne Subject: Re: [S.u.S.E. Hi, I get the following when I try to install the updated gimp rpm: bobcat:/home/sgray1 # rpm -Uvh --force gimp.rpm failed dependencies: libxdelta.so.0 is needed by gimp-0.99.17-0 libgimp.so.1 is needed by photocd-1.12-8 libgimp.so.1 is needed by sane-0.63-4 I did install the gtk.rpm prior to this. Has anyone else had simular probems? I'm having some serious problems when trying to send mail out over my PPP connection. My ISP have dynamic ip addressing, which adds to the problem. What I see is this: I'm presently using smail, but I saw the same results with sendmail. Otherwise the WINDOWMANAGER set by KDM would be overwritten by /etc/profile /etc/profile sets that for all users in the system If one wants to modify the WINDOWMANAGER setting for one user, the change should be done in ~/.bashrc there also, should be a test for the WINDOWMANAGER (if you want to use it flexibly from KDM): test -z "$WINDOWMANAGER" && WINDOWMANAGER=mywindowmanager export WINDOWMANAGER If you explicitely want to use a specific window manager, place that in ~/.bashrc: WINDOWMANAGER=mywindowmanager export WINDOWMANAGER NB: you do not need to specify the full path to the window manager binary if it is in PATH! The described problem with having to reboot is not known yet. If you do changes to /etc/profile, you have to logout, at least. This could not work, if you use xdm oder kdm since they use a shell themselves. WINDOWMANAGER is set then to default fvwm2. You could shutdown xdm then and restart it (init 2; init 3). Then, the changes in /etc/profile are valid for xdm logins, too. One should not place WINDOWMANAGER in ~/.xinitrc directly, but in ~/.bashrc as described above. OK, Found the answer to the rebooting question. If you make changes to /etc/profile (and others I'd guess), just run /sbin/SuSEconfig, log out and back in. The changes will be there. I guess thats in th Fine Manual but I haven't got to that section as of yet. That is different then I am used to but I can live wit that. Bodo, would this have taken care of that question I had about removing a package, updating a new version into a different directory and having the system not find the new one til I rebooted? If I recall, you don't automatically get any sort of .xinitrc unless: a) you start x for the first time and the system writes you one. b) you go to /var/X11R6/lib/xinit/ and do the following: cp xinitrc $HOME/.xinitrc then make changes to your personal .xinitrc to your tastes. As for your Slackware version of .xinitrc, it probably wouldn't work, since Slackware and S.u.S.E have some differences in directory structure. Plus, i think where the Slackware tarball puts certain files and where the rpm puts things is diffrent. this can cause problems. Again, Slackware doesn't automatically start with a .xinitrc file in every new users directory...I believe, as with S.u.S.E, it apperas there after teh first successful X session or if you copied the system default xinitrc into your home directory. You need to change your .xinitrc to say WINDOWMANAGER=/opt/kde/bin/startkde. That brings up more than the windowmanager..it brings up the windowmanager, kfm, and kpanel, as well as some background stuff, like kaudioserver. Just looking at my set up on S.u.S.E 5.1, I know there is a /usr/X11R6/bin/kde and a /opt/kde/bin/startkde. The scripts look exactly the same, however, I haven't used the kde executable, since in most of the KDE documentation, they reccomend using the startkde script. This has yet to fail me. I have worked with beta 1 and beta 2 of kde, and once I get everything configured, it runs like a dream. Michael Glad you mentioned .xinitrc. As I recall, you upgraded from SuSE 5.0. Well I just started with 5.1. I DON'T have an .xinitrc at all. I copied my Slackware .xinitrc over and X WOULDN'T START! Gave me an error and flat out quit. So I have to go with what they give me, if you know what I mean. Maybe we SHOULD RTFM, huh? If I understand /etc/profile, the file gets read during every log on. This would require you to log off then back on to have /etc/profile re-read. However, if you're just looking to do something minor, like setting the WINDOWMANAGER variable, then you just need to use : export WINDOWMANAGER=startkde (for KDE use) Because KDE is something of a Window system (and not just a window manager), it's easier to use the startkde script; that'll give you the kpanel, kfm, and the desktop. Or one could edit the .xinitrc and call all three individually (kpanel, kfm, and kde, that is). So, if you're looking to modify X for just one user, you could go either way : 1) Edit /etc/profile and specify WINDOWMANAGER 2) Edit $HOME/.xinitrc and specify things there Since I'm not too familiar with SuSE just yet, I don't really on WINDOWMANAGER for any of the WMs that did not get included with SuSE. For example, to use WindowMaker, I call wmaker from .xinitrc; to use AfterStep, I rename my .xinitrc and export WINDOWMANAGER=afterstep. Found the answer to this one. It is NOT a Bash 2 problem! It is another SuSE gotcha! SuSE customizes the login prompt for EVERYONE in /etc/profile with PROMPT_COMMAND. If you comment that out users can customize their own prompt in .bash_profile, like always. The lines in the original message (below) work just fine now. Wayne Subject: [S.u.S.E. I recently (read last nite) upgraded from SuSE 5.0 to 5.1. The first part when quite well which included booting the cd, telling yast to upgrade only selected software packages, and then checking out which ones were actually going to come. I got the usual post install message since I gather some software is on other cd disks and was told to reboot and the rest would be done. I did this but then found that yast claimed all had been done and came up with a few mislinked libraries, programs that suddenly wouldn't work like WABI, an upgraded x server which completely overwrote my existing and somewhat customized .fvwm2rc, and installing the demo version of applix over my registered copy. I had correctly selected all the options but still even after saving the config on a floppy diskette as it asked spent some amount of time figuring out why suddenly things like slang were not linked correctly, why WABI complained suddenly about /dev/zero, and why the /etc files like profile were completely overwritten. Libraries I had compiled myself like xforms and slang seemed broken or symbolic links had not been maintained in the upgrade process. Is this normal? I thought yast would make copies of things like profile from the existing installation and perhaps my .fvwm2rc. I always keep copies so its not a totally big deal. I am more curious about how this happened and what I perhaps did wrong. I reprint the pertinent parts right here- authInfoPass authInfoUser These are used to implement the NNTP AUTHINFO USER/PASS protocol if required by the server. These exist mostly for backward compatibility; authentication is usually only required when post ing, and then it is better to use inews for postin gAgent, since presumably inews knows all about the required authentication. Hi, Well I'm trying to get News going. I'm used to Agent under windows, and I have used it under Wabi with some minor drawbacks. I would like to get Knews or Xrn going, they connect but return either ---error 502, authentication failed or --- failed to get list I'm sure this is the authentication problem. Is there a way around this? I have seen mention of a perl module that will log on to newsserver requiring authentication. Anyone know anything about this? Is a perl script available that I can use to log on then , launch Knews? Hi, The docs for ppp-up don't give alot of attention to logins using pap. I've just set it up very easily with EZPPP. These are the basic steps: AS root you must 1. chmod 666 /etc/resolv.conf 2. chmod 666 /dev/modem 3. chown root.root /usr/sbin/pppd 4. chmod 555 /usr/sbinpppd 5. chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd 6. you must empty /etc/ppp/options to a zero file, since it interferes with ezppp 7. put any users who can dialout in the dialout group 8. put the ezppp binary in each dialout users home directory and let them own it. 9. Set up the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file: For example at Mindspring: ***************************************************** #pap-secrets # client server secret ip ms999999 mindspring yuk2yak ***************************************************** Then set up the pppd arguments in ezppp: Here is the script that works perfectly: -detach defaultroute lock modem noipdefault user ms999999 remotename mindspring This script probably could be adapted to work with ppp-up, but ezppp is so easy, I have no urge to try. It will probably work with kppp under KDE. I'm going to try it later. Well this works great for me. I don't know what the security implications are of the chmod's and chown's. Since the user is owner of the binary, I doubt if it can do much havoc. Please write if you see a flaw in this. I have since found /sbin/SuSEconfig which I think may have solved the problem(?). I think the key here is the message I got then I entered mutt. ie /usr/bin/mutt no such file or directory. Luis, There is a package (/cdrom/suse/a1/eazy.rpm) that provides the appearance of an fssstd file system layout. Once installed, downloading, decompressing and installing packages in .tgz, .tar or .gz format is more easily accomplished. The package has been include for the purposes of compatibility, it needs to be manually selected at installation or installed manually following installation. SuSE 5.1 Question. As 5.1 includes mutt-0.85 and I had been using mutt-0.88 (on Slackware) I decided to upgrade mutt. I used yast to remove the mutt-0.85 package. I then downloaded the new version, (.tar.gz), compiled it , and installed via the mutt make file (/usr/local/bin). When I tried to run the new mutt I got an odd error, /usr/bin/mutt no such file or directory. Of course /usr/local/bin/mutt worked fine. On rebooting the system, the next day, mutt worked as expected. It seems like SuSE works differently then other distributions I am used to. As /usr/local/bin is in my path, I expected the program to run, WITHOUT a reboot. SuSE does something different. As I have not finished the 5.1 book it is possible that the answer lies there but as this is so much different than I am used to, I thought that it might be helpful, to the list, if this might be explained. Just found an interesting command, which is new to me, tcpdchk, it checks out the inetd file for errors. Mine ( from SuSE 5.1) seems to have a few errors that I wonder if SuSE might know about: > tcpdchk warning: /etc/inetd.conf, line 91: /usr/lib/xcept4/bin/ceptd: not found: No such file or directory warning: /etc/inetd.conf, line 99: in.midinetd: not found in /usr/sbin: No such file or directory As of now they are not affecting me (I don't think ?) but you never know. Also found that there are no man pages or Info files for inetd.conf(5) and tlid.conf(5). I found this out while reading up on tcpdck. SuSE guys, are these available on your site somewhere?? if you edit your .xinitrc file in your home directory, there should be a line that reads: exec $WINDOWMANAGER if you rem that line (with a # sign) and add your own exec kde you will start kde as your window manager (assuming you have even installed it!!!) kde is a drag and drop window manager. you can put icons on your panel (task bar) and configure everything about the desktop from the system control center. you can also drag icons out of the kde filemanager/browser onto the desktop and copy/link/move the file. a link would be similar to a win95 shortcut. try kde and see what you think. michael zentara wrote: > Hi, > I'm trying to move from Caldera to Suse. > All is going fairly well , except for a few things. > > 1. Search for the term "Swallow" and your editor will position near the relevant line. look for something like "xeyes" and comment / delete the line. Sadly, if you regenerate a .fvwm95rc or similar (from one of the menues) they will reappear, since they appear in the mail basic "one for all" winmanager config file. Hello I wonder if there are any Bash 2.0 guru's on this list? I had a prompt line set up that worked in Bash 1 that doesn't now. Have tried to get working but to no avail. Hi, I'm trying to move from Caldera to Suse. All is going fairly well , except for a few things. 1. Where is my .bashrc file ? There isn't one in the root directory? Why does Suse do it different? Do I just create my own? 2. How do I put icons on the desktop? With Caldera's Looking Glass I could just drag and drop my programs as icons on the desktop. I can't seem to find a way to do it in Suse. Do I need a special file manager.? 3. How do I get those annoying widgets like the "moving eyes" off my desktop. I know that it's probably is all in the manual, but I figure I could use a few hints after the torture of learning Yast. I must admit SuSE works better, and is more powerful than Caldera; BUT Caldera's Lisa is way easier to use than Yast. I think the users of peoble want to use a 'more comfortable' window manager. Also, most people tend to use the newest software currently released on the market. So they use beta verions like kwm, although i won't criticise them. Since i started using linux, i use the fvwm2, maybe because this was the default window manager which has been installed by the SuSE Linux distribution. I dont know why i should change to some other, because i have all i need. I dont have any experiance with olvm until know, but i will give a look at it soon. So I heard about SuSE and downloaded The XSuSE_Elsa_Gloria server. Linux and Internet/PPP configuration.... :-) I'am currently working on a set of scripts that will make PPP installation a lot more easy. We'll have a form in YaST that asks you some questions (tel number, modem init, username/passwd...) and you can select an ISP or ISP type. With this information we'll generate a pppup/down script, and a diald configuration that can connect you to your ISP on demand. I like to have the PPP configuration as easy as the ISDN one. So, if you know something about special needs for several ISPs, please let me know. With all of the postings in various newsgroups about different window managers/desktops and their pros and cons, one question comes to mind. Why is olwm (olvwm) given such little consideration. In my mind, it is one of the cleanest - and simplest - desktop environments to use, and everything I use seems to execute quite flawlessly under it (netscape, kmail, kjots, keditor, xwpe, etc). Am I missing something? Is there some inherent problem with olvm that I have not yet encountered? Are there any regular users of olvm out there? Any comments?? Note: I do like-and use KDE and its various tools, but there are times when it still seems a little too cluttered for me. I have had the unfortuante circumstance of using anything besides a Win 95 solution that ISPs have basically told me that I am on my own. Because of this I have felt compelled to find solutions that work without contacting an ISPs tech support. As a longtime user of OS/2, it became a frustrating episode to have some tech support person tell me that I should not be using operating system "X" or "Y" because they do not support them. Shopping around for an ISP in my area (San Francisco) is quite easy. We probably have over 400 ISPs. Other areas have only a few. The PPP HOWTO while quite good at a technical level may not tell new folks the nuts and bolts of how to connect. It concentrates on technical explanations of what PPP is and how to accomplish it. Perhaps what is needed is a newbie ppp howto. People want to get online quick and see the nifty tools out there. As far as paying for an ISPs support, I believe they should provide multilayered support including diverse operating system support. Its unfortunate that many ISPs do not offer this level of support. I pay my ISP a relatively high amount and they offer a relatively high amount of service. I dont know if I would want to go shopping at this juncture even with 399 other ISPs out there. [S.u.S.E. Linux] IBM releases Object REXX for Linux

Howdy- Just a note to let people know that IBM has released a free version of their Object REXX programming language for the linux OS. It is included in two formats; one of which is a rpm file which installs without problem in SuSE. REXX is a language written by Mike Colishaw of IBM some years ago and provides a bunch of functionality. If you have used OS/2 Warp 3 or 4 you probably know something of REXX's abilities. I have done some minor stuff in REXX and it provides an interesting and fun environment for networking, internet stuff, etc. REXX is also implemented in NT and other environments as well. There are good books on REXX at amazon as well as pretty good online stuff from IBM. You simply edit the scripts with values unique to your ISP and then run one as root. A second process, much more elegant, is to use something like ezppp or xisp. Both of these can be found at the Linux Utilities and Applications page. That page is located at www.xnet.com/~blatura/linapps.shtml. There are instructions on the home pages for both programs on how to install, make scripts to completely automate your login, etc. I am quite new at the linux stuff and managed to compile xisp with help from some list members. If you would like to see the scripts I was using before compiling xisp, you can drop me a private email and I can provide them in email. Hi !!! Can someone tell me how to connect to my service provider, read my new eMails and surf on the internet with my SuSE Linux 5.0. At the moment I always have to start BUGsoft Windows95 :-)) and that is bad because I always have to restart and load the sh.... Windows 95. I recently noticed that the default knews rpm available through YAST for some reason did not find my correct domain but put in one that I could not edit. I looked through the docs for knews and found out that the domain is coded during compilation time and is not resettable in the config or other files. I ended up recompiling knews 0.9.8. Does anyone use knews out there? Is there an easier way to make the default FROM: address change after installing the rpm? I have a friend who wants to use knews and has been struggling with what it says is his FROM: also. He uses "distribution x" and has problems compiling knews. We have exchanged email correspondence to no avail. He does have slrn working quite well but is interested in exploring his options as far as internet applications go. In his case, his domain is something like stargazer,thisdomain.com and knews is only putting in thisdomain.com each time. He can edit the FROM: address each time sending a post, email, or followup... It seems that there should be something as easy as adding the correct FROM: line as in a .slrnrc file. Any ideas gratefully accepted. I unfortunately can only exchange email with him. OK...to sort some things out here...Motif is a set of library files. The included window manager with most all copies of Motif for Linux is MWM, or the Motif window manager. Usually some other demos are included as well. Also, there is a difference in cost of some packages due to the "runtime" version vs. the "Developers" version. Runtime has the needed library files but not the needed extras to owrk on developing motif based apps. Yet many companies sell only the devleopers version, thus keeping a standard cost to users. You can load the Motif libraries and not run MWM if you want, and I have to assume that is the way most users who buy Motif do. I have it loaded and running S.u.S.E. 5.1 and I am running susewm so as to have the great desktops that come with this version. And I can compile any src files that need motif. I prefer to have motif due to the superior widgets and the look and feel. There is an extreme amount of work though based on other libraries now and Motif (See <A HREF="http://www.motifzone.com/"><A HREF="http://www.motifzone.com/</A">http://www.motifzone.com/</A</A>> ), is lookin good. Yet look at KDE wchich is not Motif based. Hope this gets you started. MetroLink's Motif is probably a good copy. And all your apps should work just fine after loading Motif, mine always due. I now use a variety of applications like applix, the GIMP, xfig, plan, etc. These will continue to work under Motif, right? Motif, I gather, changes the window dressing a bit and offers some programming functionality? I understand that Motif also offers a lot of desktop functionality including multiple desktops, etc. Could someone comment on what I would see as an end user if I purchase Motif? Does someone have a screen capture of their desktop running Motif they could share with me? Hi- I would like to thank everyone who offered assistance on getting xisp working. I have the latest release now working quite well on my SuSE 5.0 machine. It took a little study of how xforms compiles and where it puts things (and does not put things...). I have also sent program developer my thanks for his help. The answer for any interested was to look at where the xforms make install puts things and wehre xisp makefile looks for things. The Descriptions are shifted on place down, starting at the label below the second AIC kernel (this one is no longer on the disc, but we forgot to remove the label...). If you can not boot the installed system, use the Bootdisk/CD, load the needed modules, and start the installed system. Then build your own kernel and use this one for booting the machine... There is another bug with the ramdisk while installing the system. But this one appears not very often. The system may crash or hang while or after partitioning in YaST. So use fdisk on the second console for partitioning... XISP works excellent under S.u.S.E. 5.0 & 5.1. I have used it and probably will until we get our cable modem service here. To compile a version for you box, un-pack into a working sub-directory; I have named simply "work" for this stuff. Using guzip -dc xisp-2.3p5.tar.gz | tar xvf - I decompress. 1. Both rc.config and resolv.conf have entries like those in the book (search .... nameserver <my_ISP_DNS_IP> ). 2. good part: both local and remote ping work. The remote works for explicit IP, 3. bad part: name resolution does not seem to work at all although I specified external DNS (those of my ISP) as I descibed in #1. Specifically, "ping <hostname>" does not return. No error but no connection to <hostname>. 4. When ppp is down, command "nslookup" produces this: "Can't find server name for address <my_ISP_DNS_IP>. No response from server" When ppp is up, nslookup does not return until I stop it by Ctrl-C. 5. It looks to me the system knows about the DNS and sends the request but handshaking did not happen What do you think is required to use outside DNS in addition to providing their IP (in rc.config and as I saw in resolv.conf) ??. My setup is V5.2, and everything has installed OK, except the 3Com 3C509 card. The system has failed to pick it up. I recently spotted the suggestion of performing a direct scan using modprobe: modprobe 3c509 io=0x300,irq=10 The resulting message was: /lib/modules/2.0.33/net/3c509.o: symbol for parameter io not found This error message also appears on the bootup screen, and has appeared consistently from the initial install. I've checked the obvious - the system has a DOS partition, so I've booted from DOS and configured the card using the 3Com utilities, both before and after the install. It runs through the hardware tests OK. The card is attached to a Warp Server LAN, but obviously it hasn't been integrated software-wise into the network. Try /dev/sda or /dev/sda4 If you have other SCSI drives, try increasing the letter until you get the right one.
