Leap 15.4 Beta - Shave 30 seconds off boot time (WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES="1")

All, My 15.0 would boot from off to full desktop in 12 seconds (kdm3/kde3). I installed 15.4 Beta and boot times were a little over 43 seconds. I wanted 15.4 to boot like 15.0. Going back to my notes, checked the same /etc/sysconfig/network/config setting and reduced the timeout from 30 to 1 and presto 15.4 beta boots from off to full desktop (kdm3/kde3) in 13 seconds! (I'll find that extra second yet) The /etc/sysconfig/network/config setting at issue is: ## Type: integer ## Default: 30 # # Some interfaces need some time to come up or come asynchronously via hotplug. # WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES is a global wait for all mandatory interfaces in # seconds. If empty no wait occurs. # #WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES="30" WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES="1" I'm not sure why there is a full 30 second default used, (one of the devs in the know will have to chime in), but I suspect it is related to dongles and non-built in hardware. For builtin hardware you ethernet and wifi hardware, you can check dmesg and locate how much time is needed to find and initialize yours. At any rate this will be done well before the OS boots to the point sysconfig is involved. It's worth tinkering with if you are a boot-time conscious user... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

15.4 Beta - solver.dupAllowVendorChange default changed to 'true'?

Devs, Why was there a default change to 'true' for solver.dupAllowVendorChange? In all prior releases of leap I have this has always been 'false'. Now it seems we have: ## Set whether to allow changing the packages vendor upon DUP. If you ## are following a continuous distribution like Tumbleweed or Factory ## where you use 'zypper dup --no-allow-vendor-change' quite frequently, ## you may indeed benefit from disabling the VendorChange. Packages from ## OBS repos will then be kept rather than being overwritten by Tumbleweeds ## version. ## ## Valid values: boolean ## Default value: true ## solver.dupAllowVendorChange = false I've set this to false because I don't want vendor changes on dup (I have packman, etc.. repos and on dup when 15.4 is released, I don't want there to be various packages from different repos installed unless I explicitly tell zypper to change vendors. Has this become safer where there is no longer a risk of getting a smattering of packages from say packman and some from oss and some from factory-python that would break things? -- David C. 15.4 Beta - cancelling "zypper se" with [ctrl + c] SEGFAULTS ??

All, This was unexpected (to me), but may be normal. Canceling "zypper se" with [ctrl + c] results in a Segmentation Fault. E.g. $ zse octabe ^C^CSegmentation fault (I meant to type octave, but had a typo so I canceled the search) Shouldn't the interrupt handler in zypper handle this in a more graceful way? The 'zse' alias for users is: alias zse='sudo zypper se -s' (not sure whether that would make any difference, but included anyway) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

15.4 Beta - What package provides Gtk+3 File Chooser for Firefox?

All, Strange deal, Firefox on 15.4 Beta 91.9 (whatever comes with it) can not download ("save link") files. It doesn't matter if it is set to download all to "~/Downloads" or set to "Always ask" for a download location. Clicking the "save as" link in the context menu doesn't work. So much so, I just have to copy the link and use wget. (which gets old quick with at large number of files). Since the only desktops I loaded were icewm (with the install) and then KDE3 and fluxbox, my guess is there is an unidentified dependency that provides the dialog and makes the download work. (that's a guess) Anybody have any insight into what package is needed or why this may be happening? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Users, was wondering when comparing opensuse roadmap article on opensuse wiki <https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap> with todays lck post on factory list <https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/thread/…> that they are still > Waiting for RC build of Leap 15.4 goldmaster code submission was yesterday or something. ty

15.4 Beta - libreoffice-calc opens maximized, crashes when maximize removed, writer - okay

All, Fresh install of 15.4 Beta and libreoffice. All apps, writer, calc, etc.. open full-screen on first run. Writer can be un-maximized (restored) without any issue, but attempting to restore calc crashes. The crash occurs regardless of whether you use the restore button (top-right titlebar next to close) or use the window menu (top-left titlebar and uncheck the "maximize" options) Before I write a bug on it, can somebody else confirm the behavior? -- David C. 15.4 Beta - /dev/sda and /dev/sdb swap drives (drive persistence problem)

All, Looking for help or suggestions on this one. I have run 2 drives in my laptop for 4+ years. Drive persistence has never been an issue. Regardless of whether sda was Windows and sdb opensuse or sda Arch and sdb opensuse. However, after an install of 15.4 Beta to /dev/sda with 15.0 still in /dev/sdb, the drives swap on rebooting 15.4. This is really, really weird. I install 15.4 on /dev/sda and then after reboot, 15.4 pops up mounted on /dev/sdb and 15.0 has been swapped to /dev/sda. The system doesn't care as all drive ID is by uuid for the system, but for short mount scripts I have that use sda/sdb, I'm having to rewrite those to use uuid as well. I've never had a BIOS Boot partition on anything other than 15.4 before, so I don't know if that contributes (I can see why it would). Is there anything anyone can think of that would make 15.4 more prone to cause drive label persistence problems more than any release before? While the 15.4 install didn't modify the 15.0 on sdb, it did include a chainload for it in grub installed for 15.4. What makes little sense is after running with swapped drives and a shutdown, the drives will pop up in the right order on power-on (but not always). Any body have any idea on this one? -- David C. Dell Precision 7560 With Tumbleweed

Hi, I have a Dell Precision 7560 machine that is running Tumbleweed. It has an Nvidia GPU but I've had no luck getting drivers to load. Curious if anyone else has a similar machine and has found a solution here. I've tried both the Nvidia proprietary drivers and also nouveau both with no luck. Initally I had the system setup using secure boot. When the drivers installed they were not creating the MOK keypair and thus on reboot there's no way to add the keypair to the MOK database. Since then I've disabled secure boot and tried reinstalling both drivers (separately) and still the drivers do load at boot. Any ideas how to get the drivers to load. For now I have an unusable GPU and thus an unusable HDMI port. I have already changed the boot mode to (slow) to load all drivers. This was required to get the openSUSE installer to boot. 15.4 install to 2nd Drive - How to Insure YAST does NOT mess with Windows on /dev/sda?

All, This really asks -- what is the default behavior for YAST if it sees Windows on sda with os_prober? I do NOT want YAST to touch the window drive, I don't want the boot sector modified, I don't want grub put there, I don't want chainloaded options for dual-boot, etc... With either 423 or 15.0 I have YAST think it was okay to modify the windows install and put grub there with options to chainload windows (which was hell finding out how to restore the boot loader on Windows (I don't want to be thrown into that briar-patch again -- ouch) So if I'm installing to sdb, and windows is sda, what do I need to do to tell YAST not to touch sda? -- David C. Perl modules install with RPM versus CPAN

When something I am installing requires a list of perl modules I have to figure out how to install them. I first have to search the rpm repositories for the module. If the module is available in rpm repositories I can use zypper to install it. Other times I have to use CPAN to install it. Does anyone know of a script that will install a list of modules by searching for it and installing from the necessary location? Bill
