The new distro is a SUSE rebuild of CentOS 8, aimed at near-perfect RHEL 8 compatibility. Since Red Hat killed off CentOS Linux and replaced it with CentOS Stream, there's been renewed activity in the world of drop-in RHEL replacements. Now a new entrant has joined AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, as SUSE enters the fray with its own rebuild of Red Hat's freely-available source code. As it has only appeared on SUSE's website overnight, we don't have a demo version at time of writing, so here is what we know so far. At launch, Liberty Linux should be equivalent to the current Red Hat release – RHEL 8.5 – and compatible with packages from Red Hat's own EPEL repos. SUSE is building the distro using its own Open Build Service tooling. All of the userland of the new distro will be built from Red Hat's official Source RPMs (SRPMs), with the exception of the kernel. That comes from SUSE's own SLE enterprise distribution, currently on version 15 SP3, but compiled using a Red Hat-compatible configuration. Since these days openSUSE's stable distro, Leap, is binary compatible with SLE, that suggests that Liberty Linux will ship with kernel 5.3.18. That's a lot newer than RHEL 8.5's kernel 4.18, so RHEL device drivers and kernel modules almost certainly won't work – but SLE ones should. You can also only expect support for Red Hat's choice of filesystems, meaning XFS rather than SUSE's preferred Btrfs, which Red Hat doesn't support. Now, I noticed something. On gkrellmn I observe, as the script runs, that the reads on the source disk (ssd, in this case) and the writes to the destination disk alternate, are not simultaneous. And it took 5 hours to image perhaps 300gigs; of course, the destination is on USB2, and the CPU is old, but that alternation doesn't help. Could that be improved somehow? forgot password for only user on new opensuse 15.3 - any way to use the installation?

Dear all, I just received a brand new notebook, freshly installed with Opensuse 15.3 (bought at slimbook.es). When renaming the standard user and resetting its password I must have made a typo, because I can no longer log in (it's the only existing user). Now I see no other way but to reinstall the full system, which seems a pity. So before doing that I wanted to ask if there is a way to avoid that, e.g., by overwriting /home and /etc/passwd from a live USB to make the installed system accessible to a new user - or is a full reinstall the only way to make the system usable? Sorry for the embarrassingly stupid problem and thank you for your help Geza

virt-manager connect to console button

Hi, tumbleweed, since some updates i have in only one of my virtual machines (virt-manager+qemu) when i double click in virt-manager, a empty window and in the middle of the window is a button (free translated from german): "connect to console" "verbinden mit Konsole" when i click on this button, the screen of the virtual machine is there and all is fine. question is, why only at one machine, and where could i disable this function? -- www.becherer.de

permanent changing of file /usr/lib/systemd/network/99-default.lnk

Hi, often on tumbleweed updates it updates the file: /usr/lib/systemd/network/99-default.lnk so it get overwritten. (since years with the same contens) i have to change always inside this file one line to let my network on same mac adress (network is with bridge and tap devices) i change: # MACAddressPolicy=persistent MACAddressPolicy=none all is ok again. i think this file is not the correct place to make this changes. where should i do this change to be not overwritten by system updates?? thanks, simoN -- www.becherer.de

OpenSuse 15.2 ports closed, no firewall enabled

On OpenSuse 15.2, the assigned IP address has only SSH port open. The localhost has several more open, which allows me to run mail server, by referencing localhost. However, this causes other machines on local network to be denied access to the email server. Firewall is not enabled, iptables shows no rules. I am puzzled.

If it says "localhost", you need to edit it to say "all" and restart. All, Since my Suddenlink ISP is to incompetent to find the problem that is blocking receipt of opensuse list e-mails, I've subscribed through my gmail address -- so I will now get list mails. (Thank you Carlos for letting me know that was an option. Patrick, you can cancel the forward to the suddenlink account - thank you VERY much for your help with the list mails during the past year) What is the world coming too.... Audacity error: FFmpeg library not found (Leap 15.3)

I only recently upgraded from 15.2 to 15.3. On first opening Audacity (from the Main repository) I get a dialog saying FFmpeg library not found, and to go to Preferences -> Libraries to sort it out. When I go there I see it's looking for libavformat.so.58 which I already have installed. According to YaST I have libavformat58_76 from Packman, but I can't direct Audacity to anywhere that it will see it. The adjoining Download button is useless, it just tells me I don't have the help manual installed, which is nonsensical at best. There was no such problem under Leap 15.2. gumb
