size of firefox sqlite database files

Hello: Currently I use firefox 91.4.1esr in openSUSE 15.3. I noticed that in the profile directory the size of some sqlite database files does not change after deleting history. Namely, places.sqlite, favicons.sqlite, cookies.sqlite files' size remains the same after deleting history. Why don't the file sizes decrease after deleting their content by deleting history? I have many profiles and want to decrease the profiles' size. I thought bu deleting history I can do it but not. Can someone explain this? Thanks, Istvan

KDE Connect - Too many notifications.

A couple of months ago, I got a new Google Pixel 6 phone. Since then, I've been getting an excessive amount of email notifications from KDE Connect on my computer. Sometimes I have a stack of them reaching almost the top of my screen. I have checked both the phone and computer KDE Connect settings and I can't see anything that would cause this. Is there any way to stop all these notifications, short of uninstalling KDE Connect? KDE on Leap 15.3 Previously used a Pixel 2. tnx jk

how could this happen? accidental mass file deletion

Hi, I am with OS 15.2/KDE and a very strange thing happened to me: all files (not the sub-folders, but the files in them) of my desktop folder were deleted without that I know why... what I did (in case it gives a hint) : Started SimpleScreenRecorder to record the complete screen in an mp4 in the desktop folder (this file vanished also). I paused/continued the screen recorder several times. Started Win10 in Virtual-Box, did some photo editing, shut down Win10, and when I saw my desktop again there were no icons, only some folders. I got aware of heavy disk use and shut down the computer. After booting again I saw that all files (several hundreds) in this folder and its subfolders were gone, but not the folders themselves. It only affected the Desktop folder and its subfolders, no others as much as I can see. To do this deliberately I would have to enter an rm with options, but I didn't... I know that during this session my mouse began to be defective, a right click produced a double-click, but that shouldn't be able to produce such a command, isn't it? Is there a way I can find out what happened exactly? Search (for what?) in what log? It seems mysterious to me and disquiets me although since then everything seems to work normally. (Luckily I am a back-up-freak, so no damage, but still...) (the desktop folder isn't shared with windows, the shared folder is on another partition and wasn't affected) Any thoughts? Hello, I use for some years a rsync line in cron to make a backup from a server to an other server. btrfs on source, ext4 on target. Right now I have to be run from root on the receiving part # rsync -azv -e ssh -x --exclude=/tmp --exclude=*cache* --exclude=*.Trash* --exclude=/sys --exclude=/proc --exclude=/dev --delete root@<source domain>:/* <local folder> I checked that -x do *not* exclude /proc. But it may be also useful to exclude /run? isn't this one dynamic (ie removed at boot time). puleaudio testing microphone GUI

Hello: I would like to test my microphone in pulseaudio. All info I found say that I have to load manually the loopback module in a terminal to hear the microphone, and after testing unload the module. Isn't there a GUI tool which has button for testing/hearing the microphone? I don't even understand why this option is not part of pavucontrol of some other pulseaudio GUI program. Thanks, Istvan

mailutil program in openSUSE Leap 15.3

Hello: I've been using mailutil program to backup my imap mailboxex. It seems that openSUSE Leap 15.3 doesn't have this program. It is part of alpine package and it is there in Leap 15.1 alpine. But not in Leap 15.3 alpine package. I checked two alpine packages, the official OSS package, and alpine from repositories/server:/mail/ repo. None has mailutils. Does anyone know why, and if its remove was announced? Thanks, Istvan

Troubles installing OpenSuSE 15.3 on a HP Spectre laptop

Hello - I have an HP Spectre laptop that came with Windows 10 installed on it. It has a 1Tb SSD drive with almost 800Gb of unallocated space. I want to install OpenSuSE 15.3 x64 on this laptop as part of a dual boot system. I have done this many times in the past on other desktops and laptops but this time I am running into a couple of unexpected problems that is preventing the installation. I created an UEFI USB installation disk from the ISO file that I downloaded from the OpenSuSE downloads website. In the BIOS I turned off "Secure Boot" and set the boot order to allow booting first from USB devices. I did not have to choose whether to use "Legacy Booting" as there is no option in the BIOS for it. The installation of OpenSuSE starts off OK and I had no apparent problem with setting up the network WiFi connection. The installation process does not allow me to manually test and/or check to see if the network really got set up OK. The first problem occurs when the installation process gets to where it is attempting to read the list of Online Repositories. Here I get a warning message "Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined." No reason why is given and all I can do about it is to click the OK button and move on. Maybe the WiFi network connection is not working after all? I dunno how to check it at this point in the installation process. Sigh... Next I select for a System Role to use "Desktop with KDE Plasma" and when I click on Next I get a far more serious error message - "An error was found in one of the devices in the system. The information displayed may not be accurate and the installation may fail if you continue." The "Details..." button shows - "cannot delete MdContainer" and again I can only choose "OK" to dismiss this rather useless error message. I got no idea what an MdContainer" is! Google searches suggests it has to do with docker containers but that doesn't help me either as I don't grok much about docker and have never use it. The best discussion about this error, that I found, was at https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/523095/opensuse-leap-15-1-install-… But the solution appears to be to delete and remove Windows 10 and the partitions it resides in. NOT what I want to do, I want a dual boot system with both OS's. Another suggestion was to contact HP Support which I have done but they seem to be taking a very long time to respond, so I am turning to this forum to see if anyone here can provide and/or guide me to a solution. FYI If I continue on, with the installation process, I reach a dead-end at the point where one is suppose to set up the disk partitions for OpenSuSE. The partitioner does not allow me to access or change anything within the SSD drive. Any attempt to do so, I get told the device is busy. When/How to update tumbleweed

For the longest time I was depending on https://review.tumbleweed.boombatower.com to figure out when it was safe to update tumbleweed and which release to update to. That site has not been updated due to an issue with the mailing list where the site got its information. So for people who use tumbleweed, how do you know when is a good time to update? What command do you use? I know there is snap and that I can roll back if something breaks, but obviously would rather not go through that. Thanks and Happy New Year!

no more usb keyboard and mouse

Hello, since the very last update with "zypper up --recommand", my openSUSE Leap 15.3 do not anymore accept external keyboard or mouse. however, booting windows 10 (!!!), and rebooting immediately (no need to login) restore the mouse/keyboard usual working the usb keyboard works as expected in grub menu booting the previous snapshot do not makes any better this was since 48 hours and right now still no new update may I fill a bug report? thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org http://valeriedodin.com
