Remote desktops

I want to have remote desktops in to openSUSE systems. I currently use x11vnc to do this from other Linux computers. Connecting to an existing session as well as letting the session be shared are needed. x11vnc does this fine. We use the default display :0 for this. Recently (after leap 42.3 some time), it seems that x11vnc or X requires that one provide an authorization file to access the desktop. It is specified to x11vnc via the -auth option. This would generally not be a problem. Except finding the file to use is a bit of a hack. Where the files is located depends on, it seems, which display manager one is using. When using kdm, for example, the file(s) are in /var/lib/kdm/AuthFiles/. Other dms put them elsewhere. Which brings me to my real question. I start x11vnc via xinetd. In that context, I would like how to know what authorization file to use for display 0. That is the one we usually connect to and share. Initially, I had just edited the xinetd file with the name of the new authorization file, which is made each time the display manager starts. This was not nice. So I thought I might just use a wild card to get the name of the file in /var/lib/kdm/AuthFiles/ as there was only one. We only use display :0. Today, on a couple systems, I suddenly find more than one authorization file. I have no idea why. So the wild card thing will not be a real solution. How are others solving this? To be honest, I don't really want the auth thing. I would be quite happy to just disable it all together. But if that is not possible, how best to find out in an automated way (i.e., in a shell script) which auth file to specify to x11vnc? I am quite flexible in solutions. I'm not married to x11vnc.It just has been working fine. -- Roger Oberholtzer

Hi, since some days i recognized that in libreoffice or thunderbird, when i write a text with a "€" (euro-symbol) everiting seems ok. but when i mark the text with shift and arrow-keys then press strg+c and on a other place strg+v the euro symbol is replaced by a "?" (questionmark) if i mark the euro-symbol with mouse and press medium mouse button to copy, the euro-symbol is still there example: writing text: € copiing text: ? i have no idea where to check whats going on here. system is tumbleweed, kde, german i do not think its a tumbleweed bug, because same systems did not behavior like this. it must be a configuration problem. -- www.becherer.de

move root to new disk

Dear all, Possibly this topic was discussed several times, and there are a number of "tutorials" found on the web. Maybe too much. So: I would like to move my root partition to a brand new SSD, and keep /home on the old disk. I copied the existing one with dd and gave it a new UUID. How can I proceed? This is an UEFI machine. Since /boot/efi is tiny, I think it can remain where it is now. Should I create a swap on the SSD? And possibly the most important: how can I tell the laptop to use the root on the SSD.? I tried to unmount the existing /, but since it is in use, I cannot umount it. Thanks for the help. dns cache problem

I have in my home directory a file, it appeared the 6th of November. I do not recall anything special. It is owned by root: [code] ls -l ? -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5 6 nov 16.15 ? [/code] you cannot change the name to "?", it is 5 Bite of size, you cannot open it with kate e.g. to read or see the content. But you can: [code] sudo cat /home/entropia/? 9427 [/code] "9427"?? What could this be? A damage to the file system? Need to run fsck? And why I cannot, even as root eliminate it? Could it be related to the use of bleachbit? I did run bleachbit as superuser on the system. But even if, it should not have created such a weird thing. Weird problem with webcam

I have a weird problem with my Logitech C270 webcam. It has worked well for years, including a lot of video chats recently. However, a couple of weeks ago, the microphone stopped working. It doesn't even appear in Pulse Audio. I then tried it in my ThinkPad, where it again failed. On the other hand the microphone in my Logitech headset works fine with both computers. This led me to believe the webcam microphone had failed. I then bought another C270 and the same thing happens! I then tried booting the Thinkpad into Windows 10, where the webcam microphone now works. Any idea why it would fail in openSUSE 15.2, but work in Windows 10 on the same computer? tnx jk

Leap 15.2 sudden loss of ethernet

while using my ACER E5-575 I suddenly lost my ethernet port access. I had a friend check it and the connection works under a usb flash connected distro. But it no longer works in Leap even with delete and adding it back. I can and will do a reinstall Monday if I can not make this work. There should be a solution but I did not find anyone else online having it. I am having my friend test the wireless which I do have locally. What if any elegant solution short of complete reinstall will correct this? mounting hard drive as executable

Hi, OK trying to mount a hard drive so I can install steam games (I have a 512 GB SSD with the OS -Tumbleweed-on it) and so I want the Hard Drives for the installations. These are the 2 drives and this is the fstab entries I used: #UUID=E4S46B88D46B5BB4 /home/ekim/mrmike ntfs defaults PARTUUID=9ef08689-2e85-4ada-9b22-cf4533e076d0 /home/ekim/mrmike ntfs permissions,uid=1000,umask=022,gid=1000 0 2 #xavier #UUID=D892118892116BEE /home/ekim/xavier ntfs defaults PARTUUID=5ae7b70a-f359-4bc6-9420-ab1913fd040c /home/ekim/xavier ntfs permissions,uid=1000,umask=022,gid=1000 0 2 They are mounted with me as a user owning them but I cannot write to them. So how should I mount them. Is it a root problem or do I need to change the permissions or something else. Thanks for any help, mike spartana
