A 16TB hard disk drive is on sale for far less than you'd think 16TB HDD for just over $400 <https://www.techradar.com/news/a-16tb-hard-disk-drive-is-on-sale-for-far-le…> Storage giant Seagate unveiled two new hard disk drives with a 16TB capacity earlier this year and for once, it was not all about data centers. The Exos X16 and the IronWolf/IronWolf Pro targeted two different audiences (data center for the first and NAS users for the second) and feature SATA or SAS interface only for the first one and SATA only for the second model. Provantage is selling the _Exos_ <https://www.provantage.com/seagate-st16000nm001g~7SEGE1K1.htm> (ST16000NM001G) for just over $400 while the _IronWolf_ <https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-IronWolf-16TB-256Mb-7200Rpm/dp/B07SNW9W48/re…> one (ST16000VN001) retails for just under $500 from Amazon. Both have nine platters, use Helium technology and have a five year warranty (the IronWolf has three); they also share the s same spinning speed (7200RPM), idle power (5W), average latency (4.16ms) and cache (256MB). The Exos range carries a MTBF (mean time before failures) at 2.5M hours and boasts a higher sustained transfer rate at 261MBps; the IronWolf Pro and the IronWolf reach 250 and 210MBps respectively. The basic Linux OS as a healthy instlation can fit on under 500MB never mind 500GB, probably less. Let's not forget that memory is cheap and you probably can manage without swap unless you are doing something intense like photediting. Short of and EMP (and even then it's questionable) from various sources (and then there's the issue of how concerned with your digital memories will you be in the aftermath?) that might leave magnetic memory intact but erase (unsheilded) semiconductor memory ... No, wait! My current generation Dell box is heavily RF shlded. It's far removed from some of the 'white box from Tiawan' PCs chassis I have in my basement in this regard. Not that my neighbours ever complained about my PC (or, in times past, my radio HAM equipment) interfering with their TV (whihc was probably cable anyway). With one my daughters who lives half the world away I had a good exchange with Skype. Since she works on an older I pad which is excluded from the last IOS updates her Skype does not work anymore. What are the programs we both can use to start connecting again. [opensuse] seamonkey browser and google.com site loading delayed

Hello: I installed mozilla seamonkey 2.49.5 (64-bit) on openSUSE Leap 42.2. When I try to access https://www.google.com site, it takes ~90 seconds for the browser to load the site. This consequently occurs every time after a browser restart. It occurs to a fresh seamonkey profile too, and it occours only to seamonkey. Firefox loads the site immediately. I tried to search for it but couldn't find anything. Any idea on what causes the error and how to solve it is welcome! [opensuse] generally accepted that rpm version numbers are not guaranteed to collate properly?

Had 2 versions of a package where a script I had tried to delete the older package when the newer one was downloaded to replace it. But in this case, comparing Printrun-2.0.0~rc5.1522069560.e0ee40a-2.5.x86_64.rpm against Printrun-20170720~pre.1494969671.f54b6f9-1.1.x86_64.rpm The 2.0 version is the latest, but the rpm-ver compare seems to look at numeric v. non-numeric fields and ends up comparing '2' to 20170720 -- and comes up with 2 < 20170720, so '2' is older. Seems like there really is no way to compare rpm versions that are like this, with the only result being that the distro-downloader needs delete older version when it installs a new version, which can be a pain if there was some change between the two that you might want to compare or back out. Admittedly, as a % of packages downloaded, it is a VERY small number where that happens, often 0. But it seems like more often, some new version of something breaks something that used to work, so it seems prudent to keep those things around. Probably little can be done about this, just a matter of adapting to a bogus environment. With that, I can share with a person; but what google does is send him the link, but once the link is known everybody in Internet can see the photos. Yes, it is a long and obscure link, but still... I do not feel "safe". A spider might find it, right? So looking at alternatives. Some other service out there? (gratis preferably) Maybe Google drive, perhaps? I might host them myself. I have a minimal Linux server accessible from Internet. Now, what software, just Apache? Maybe too much work, maybe there is already something out there for the job. Apache has a complication: I have to differentiate the internal LAN web from Internet web. And I think it has to be based on the port. Why do I say that? Hello everyone, since I upgraded my system from Leap 15.0 to Leap 15.1 with zypper dup, I cannot use curl on secure connections anymore due to an error between curl and openssl. [opensuse] can't open remote X display

I have a Raspberry Pi with a display and I'd like to run a program on my openSUSE PC but display the results on the pi's display. At the moment I'm running everything from the keyboard on my openSUSE box (i.e. the pi is just a display, no input). So I have opened an ssh session to the pi and disabled access control: $ ssh -X pi@RpiBplus pi@rpibplus's password: Linux RpiBplus 4.19.57-v7+ #1244 SMP Thu Jul 4 18:45:25 BST 2019 armv7l [etc] pi@RpiBplus:~ $ DISPLAY=:0 xhost + access control disabled, clients can connect from any host pi@RpiBplus:~ $ but if I then use another session on the openSUSE box to try to use the remote display, it fails: $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.22:0.0 xeyes Error: Can't open display: 192.168.1.22:0.0 and just to confirm the address: pi@RpiBplus:~ $ ip address list ... inet 192.168.1.22/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global noprefixroute eth0 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever ... Does anybody have any idea what might be preventing this connection? Hi all, I'm thinking about making (for one of my projects), the step towards "Tumbleweed". Main reason is, that each time after the official release, we need too much time to make our systems up-and-running again. The hope is, that with a rolling-release, the steps from week-to-the-next-week, will be significant smaller. However, I'm dependent upon packages** only made for SLES / RHEL / Ubuntu. Is it worth trying, or can you tell me that it will be a waste of time. **those packages are: openvpn-NL, Smartcard drivers by AET, and Citrix-client. Dear community members, It's 26 December! The call for nominations and applications for the openSUSE Board election has ended. We received four applications.
