[opensuse] Leap 15.0 Networking Woes (NetworkManager conflicts with Wicked)

Hi, I have networking problem with fresh install of Leap 15.0 on 2 pcs, which seem to be similar to the one I had when upgraded 42.3 to Leap 15 late beta. However, this is 100% fresh install on reformatted SSD in HP desktop. Symptoms is the same - after first restart networking service (with Wicked) is broken. Examining logs showed that for whatever reason NetworkManager is not fully disabled. 1 - NetworkManager-wait-online.service still tries to start and fails with timeout error 2 - KDE NetworkManager plazma applet tries to initiate connection on eth0 and fails. It should show “ NetworkManager is not running” instead. I tried to fix this: 1) Disabled NetworkManager.service and NetworkManager-wait-online.service with systemctl disable NetworkManager.service systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service After restart annoying NetworkManager still disrupts networking. 2) Switched in Yast Wicked -> NetworkManager, the back, restart. Problem the same. rcnetwork restart cures problem till next system reboot. I can’t remove NetworkManager because it also deleted KDE / MATE. Switching KDE to MATE do not changes anything. Anyone can suggest what system component (I suspect some freedesktop or dbus-org services) disrupts networking ? Hardware: Lenovo X201 (ironlake with 8 GB Ram). OS: Leap 15 (upgraded from 42.3 (the latter was a fresh install). Program: rkhunter (issues a warning) To be known: the lenovo had a ram issue with memtest claiming errors. At the very time I received the first of these warnings. Therefore that could(!) be related. In the meanwhile the SO-DIMM have been changed. Memtest shows no errors now. Or really some malware problem (I doubt it, but the system is open to all exploits of spectre, meltdown etc, so in remote theory it "could" be). Did anybody encounter this type of warning? Does anybody know if a previous faulty ram (even after repair) could be responsible? I wanted to ask before proceeding to a fresh install as it is a lot of work. entropia is the user for all tasks and receives root mail mercurio just handles kontact connectix just handels network related tasks and is usually the first user to be logged in. What else (setting etc) could cause shared memory segments. [opensuse] Copied files to new Leap 15 installation on new SSD - 0B files, can't open

Hi, I've just discovered a scary behavior of my Leap 15 installation. The notebook's SSD is a brand new MX500. I let the installer do the format and chose LVM and encryption. Then I copied all my files from an external SSD to the new one and I'm facing the issue now that many files (seems random) cannot be opened and are are shown to be 0B in size. This affects all sorts of files, JPGs, PDFs, XLS... How can I debug the problem? I kind of rely on this machine and so far my important work is still there and I have backups of course. Thanks. I'm not aware of anything that changed in the squid's FTP module. But you have also included almost no information about your setup aside from "it doesn't work", so it's rather difficult to help here. 1. provide your squid.conf - simple setup means this is really short, right? 2. provide what response you are actually getting 3. I'm assuming that at least squid is starting for you? 4. what messages do you get in the access.log? I went to the Bugzilla page to file report on a problem I have with an upgrade. I see there that under versions Leap 15.1 is an option. I went to the Get Opensuse page to format a new DVD, and they still show Leap 15.0. I hate making stupid reports on Bugzilla, and would like to know if 15.1 is available and if so where. I'll try to be polite for this ;) why do I have to run chrony? why can I not use a decent NTP client, and be able to configure it in Yast? why am I denied permission to run a shell script **even as the admin user**? what is ruby doing that is so important that it blocks me from installing a rpm that I have downloaded (drivers for my printer)? Hi, I've noticed that Dictionary plugin in KRunner (alt-F2) doesn't work on my two computers, both running Leap 15 KDE Plasma (upgraded from 42.3). It seems that, when I enter "define <some word here>", a connection is attempted to a dict server on address 216.18.20.172, port tcp/2628, but no results are received/displayed. I see that in tcpdump and netstat. I tried another randomly chosen client for dict protocol, same server, same port, and it works. I filled a ticket at bugzilla, but am not hoping anything will happen soon regarding that. So, here I am, asking list members for help. Anybody? TIA and best regards, Radule

[opensuse] Idiot Question about Btrfs

For historical reasons my longstanding practice has been to keep two, sometimes three, separate installations of openSUSE on this multi-boot machine. I use one of them as the principal productive installation, with the other(s) available for experiments or as recovery tools if I screw something up in the main installation. Each of the installations has its own segregated (ie non-shared) /home. But, also for historical reasons, they do all share three additional custom mounts, two for general data and one for images, videos and soundfiles. All installations including the three custom mounts are in ext4 only. Currently I have Leap 42.3 as the main daily use installation, with Leap 42.2 and Tumbleweed “in reserve”. My intention is to replace 42.2 with Leap 15 as a fresh installation (not an upgrade), for use as the principal productive installation. My question is about filesystems. I’ve watched the various discussions about Btrfs with interest, though I haven’t understood much of it and have so far chosen to stick with ext4 throughout. But Btrfs seems to be improving, including in the context of rollback. So, what are the implications, if any, of installing Leap 15 using its default Btrfs and xfs filesystems in place of the existing Leap 42.2 installation but leaving the three additional data partitions (and the other installations) formatted in ext4? Alternatively, should I also convert the three shared data partitions now in ext4 to Btrfs? If so, does that mean that the root filesystem for each of the other installations should also be converted to Btrfs? Decryption : upon entering password , error message appears saying "Decryption failed" , but , there is a tiny box for "Details" : upon opening details , full-page , there appears entire file in Decrypted form ! [opensuse] Documentation on using an alternate display manager like xdm or fvwm

The released notes says the setting up the use of an alternate display manager has mover from /etc/sysconfig to the alternatives system. I can't locate documentation on that. The release notes says to use update-alternatives to Set Login Manager and Desktop Session. That is only thing I see in the release notes. I do not know what "To enable graphical management of alternatives, use the YaST module Alternatives" is going to do, and to what files. There is an example there used to switch the default-displaymanager to xdm: sudo update-alternatives --set default-displaymanager \ /usr/lib/X11/displaymanagers/xdm Login manager: default-displaymanager I have used fvwm2 in the past and would like to use it again. I tried to enable fvwm in the startup window present after booting, before logging on, but nothing worked. I am just looking for documentation now. My current Leap 15 system is pretty lame, so the docs may be in /usr/share, which I am currently not able to confirm. [opensuse] Dell 1110 printer not working with 15.0

I have a Dell 1110 laser printer that worked with 42.3, but not 15.0 In CUPS, I get this error message: "SpliX Invalid PPD file version: 2.0.0 but the PPD file is designed for SpliX V. SpliX V. 2.0.0" In Yast software management, the openprinting-splix the installed version 2.0.0-2lsb3.2 is displayed in red, which I don't recall seeing before. Oddly enough, acroread works in Tumbleweed out of the box. Get the original reader from: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/ To get it working, you can copy all necessary libraries (it depends e.g. of the gtk2-theme) from a Leap 42.3 installation or from SUSE repos to /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/lib/ at least libxcb (.so file and symlink). In my case with oxygen-gtk theme I need additional libraries: libpcre librsvg If it is not working for you you can check the broken lib by editing the shell script /opt/Adobe/Reader9/bin/acroread. In line 22 replace exec with gdb, run acroread from the console and type run at the debugger prompt. [opensuse] What is so special and non-standard about Leap 15.0 network stack dhcpv4 client wise?

Situation: some soho router a.k.a. internet gateway device with some standard isp. LAN side the igd assigns ipv4 addresses via dhcv4 to the clients. Windows and all work nicely, only the leap, now 15.0 device suddenly is barely locatable on the network, all port assignments in the igd firewall, portforwarding and ipv4 assignment is bust. The router *did* assign always the same rfc1918 ipv4 address to most of the LAN clients. But then again OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 machine decided to go nuts and talk to the igd in a way that is beyond my understanding and I could not find out how this machine suddenly gets still the same 'always the same ipv4' steady ipv4 address, but all the rules and forwardings to this machine wouldnt work on the igd, until I needed to remove the machine from the igd config settings and reconfigure everything. How is this even possible? The igd assigns 'same' ipv4 addresses on the LAN by taking the MAC address of the LAN clients into consideration. In fact, this is the only thing that the igd talks about how it were to identify the LAN clients. Still, there must have been some more stuff that was beyond the visibility of the igd userinterface (web interface) that was taken into account, as all the port forwardings were not valid and did not reach this Leap 15.0 client at all, although everything was fine when the Leap was stil at 43.2 level. Then I found the release notes of 15.0... ::: 7.2 Wicked: Using RFC 4361 DHCPv4 client-id on Ethernet ...speaking about fancy 'new' rfc being taken into consideration with dhcp ipv4 setups as far as I understand. Only I have never heard about this rfc until the leap 15.0 documentation, and more importantly it was completely intransparent to me that the igd actually did distinguish the leap 43.2 stage from the leap 15.0 state of the machine. Obviously the MAC address has not changed at all, and the igd config was selected to maintain a virtually static ipv4 LAN wise, but it didnt. Again, openSUSE has caused me serious headaches and unreachable systems where I needed to manually intervene and set things straight or reconfigure or start from scratch. This gets really annoying a lot and I just dont understand why there cant be a steady and stable way to do things or at least to migrate things from one opensuse release to the very next in a steady way. Things like nonbooting systems I read about a lot by others posts or bug-reports, or things like this here about essential things changing rendering systems behave differently on an essential level are of the same impact to me. I am very disappointed of opensuse, again, and this project just doesnt grow on me at all any more. In my opinion there are way too many reboots of various kinds of software layers, stacks and components in the opensuse ecosystem, and as a general rule, a system upgrade is one of the worst nightmares I can possibly think of, when working in an opensuse environment. I can absolutely not recommend opensuse to anyone. [opensuse] Problem with suid pgms on Leap-15.0

I am upgrading an older SuSE-13.2 box to Leap. I have done a fresh Leap-15.0 install and ported over the source code that we ran on the 13.2 box. I builds fine but I am having an issue. The program is/has to be an suid pgm. It also uses fork/execvpe/wait to execute some external scripts. And that is where my problem lies. The user is a member of several groups but these group memberships seem to disappear when these external scripts are executed. For instance the user is a member of the cdrom group so he can eject and work with a DVD. It is not proper to me. This all works fine on 13.2 but does not on Leap 15 or Leap 42.3. Is there some security setting somewhere that broke this? Any help from anyone would be appreciated.
