[opensuse] windows question

Since I know many of you are system administrators and have to know about Windows as well as linux, I thought I would ask this simple windows question. On my dell laptop which is dual boot, there is a partition with the label 'WINRETOOLS' that is about 450 mb in size. There is also a partition with the label 'Image' that is about 12 gb in size. They both have the ntfs file system. I have a bash procedure I have written for making daily/weekly backups of my hard drive, and I use rsync to clone my ext4 partitions. I use 'ntfsclone' to clone the windows partition, so that if my hard drive fails I can swap out the backup and be back up and running, complete with dual boot. I do use windows on occasion with this computer, so I want to keep the windows backup current. However, I haven't done anything to set up backing up windows images or anything like that. I haven't wanted to get too into the windows side of things which results in microsoft logging your life on their servers. But my question is, does windows automatically keep the 'WINRETOOLS' partition and/or the 'Image' partition updated when windows is being used? If so, I will need to clone those partitions also. [opensuse] sudden problems with firefox address bar

This touches all user accounts, whether plugins present or not. You cannot open an address via the address bar. You can open all bookmarks without problems. You cannot search (and the search selection is shown empty) You can search on default search page of opensuse. What ever you get as result you can open it by clicking on it. to discuss sloppiness of tests (or at least an unwillingness to clarify test assumptions) (its a while ago, but i believe this is the outline). in 2016 he did comparisons of different distros, testing read write speed using a database. I am trying to use vncviewer from a Leap 42.3 system to connect to a Windows display. I have done this in the past. Now I am trying from a Leap 42.3 install. I get this from the vcnviewer: Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontStruct Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font Error: Aborting: no font found It does this after accepting the password. In fact, I have many fonts installed (it's a KDE desktop). I have seen this reported over 15 years ago. But I don't see much now. And the solutions were typically to install some fonts. These vnc RPMs are installed. The vncviewer is from tightvnc x11vnc-0.9.13-18.2.x86_64 libXvnc1-1.6.0-21.1.x86_64 xorg-x11-Xvnc-1.6.0-21.1.x86_64 tightvnc-1.3.10-123.10.x86_64 These font packages are installed: xorg-x11-fonts-core-7.6-34.16.noarch xorg-x11-fonts-7.6-34.16.noarch gnu-unifont-bitmap-fonts-20080123-88.3.noarch noto-sans-fonts-20151215-4.13.noarch google-noto-fonts-doc-20151215-4.13.noarch liberation-fonts-1.07.2-6.3.noarch hack-fonts-2.020-3.3.noarch ghostscript-fonts-std-9.06-29.5.noarch Other X applications seen to run (e.g., xterm). [opensuse] Scanner Setup

Hi, I have dug out my old scanner. A Tiny FU318D. The scanner powers up fine. It was last used with Windows 98SE in 2006 I have plugged it in and is does not show in SimpleScan scanimage -L does not find any scanners lsusb shows it as: Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0461:0340 Primax Electronics, Ltd Colorado 9600 Scanner This is the first scanner I have come across that doesn't 'Just work' in Linux. Does anyone know how I can go about diagnosing the problem and getting the scanner to work? I wouldn't know where to start on this one. Hi, I am exploring the option to set up a mail relay with SuSE/SLES. I have always done it Debian before and now I wanted to try another approach (mainly because of YAST so other people admin it too) Is it possible to set up a mail relay that does DKIM (and possible ARC) signing with YAST only? Ofc there is alot of different domains that is going to use that relay. Let me know if I am unclear! Thanks!

[opensuse] Ethernet and onboot/oncable

The configuring Ethernet ports in openSUSE, it is possible to say when the port should be configured. This is the STARTMODE= value in the port configuration file. Has there been a deliberate change in the 'onboot' mode? In previous openSUSE releases, this would cause the port to be configured when the system is booted, independent of whether there is a cable attached. If one want to require that there be a cable, STARTMODE can bet set to 'oncable'. In Leap 42,3, it seems that when one selects On Boot in YAST, STARTMODE is set to 'auto'. If there is no cable attached, the port does not get an address. It acts like 'on cable connect'. I am not running Network Manager. The ports are managed in the traditional way (or whatever fills that role these days). The network and related services are all running before anyone logs in. This is a problem in systems that boot along with other hardware. If, say, the Leap machine starts it's network before some other system, the port on Leap will not get an address. This is bad. While plugging in cable (or the remote system turning on) will cause the port to get an address, services that use that port are not restarted. For example, dhcpd will ignore ports without an address - and it will never try again until you actively restart it. [opensuse] btrfs and deletion of large directory

I've a server accumulating a lot of netflow data. The whole filesystem is btrfs. It's not yet full, but it's getting full enough that I've been removing some old netflow data directories. But even though the directories themselves are quite large, deleting them has no impact of reported disk usage, either at the OS level, or the level of the various btrfs filesystem commands. I've run the suse cron.weekly and cron.monthly btrfs jobs (scrub and balance). They do not help, with the same reported usage before and after jobs run. I've removed old snapshots. This also has no impact on reported usage. What sorts of trouble shooting steps would be next? What am I missing? I am using the 'additional hosts' mechanism of DNSMasq to block adverts Only DNSmasq doens't seem to be diing the job. Does anyone know a way to search the mailing list archives where the search criteria get obeyed? Whenever I try to search by date range, first using the search box on e.g. https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/ and then opening the advanced search link, the date range I provide is utterly disregarded. When I try to limit results to only one list, that too is utterly disregarded. Also, there's no option in the select list to search only the body. Yesterday or the day before there was a post I now want to follow up to, but I already deleted it when it arrived, and have no idea which thread or list it was on. [opensuse] text changes in libreoffice calc

I am trying to make a record of my partitions on various drives in a libreoffice calc spreadsheet. Whenever I start to type something like "/dev/sda1" into a cell, as soon as I hit the 2nd forward slash, the first forward slash disappears and the font of what I just typed switches to italics. It seems like some kind of autocorrect feature that should be easily disabled, but I can't find that keystroke sequence in the autocorrect listings, as there is nothing in there that indicates a change in font style. Hi All, For those of you who don't know me my name is Simon Lees and I am announcing my intention to run for the board. About me: As you can guess from my email address I now work for SUSE, I have done so for 2 years but I have been involved in the openSUSE community for around 7 years, mostly packaging the enlightenment desktop and a few other things. I am also part of the factory review team and have contributed to a bunch of other areas including patterns etc. Vision for the project: The reasons I started using openSUSE were 1. It treated all software particularly desktops equally, 2. The reasons I started contributing to openSUSE 7ish years back were 1. basically any contribution is welcome and 2. contributing is easy. I don't have any radical new plans for the vision of the project I think its in a really good place, mostly I just want to keep helping to make the reasons I joined the project reasons for other people to join and keep working on the project. Why Vote for me: * When I see something that needs fixing i'll probably just go and fix it. * I have decent people skills and am reasonably good at helping people work through problems. * I have a good technical understanding of may parts of the project. Hi list, any experts for tmpfiles.d around? I have a laptop with intel ME that has a serial port. It is detected by linux (serial8250), but doesn't work because ME is disabled. Bad thing is, anything trying to access it runs into a 30s timeout :(( So I try to remove access to it using tmpfiles.d: woodstock:~ # cat /etc/tmpfiles.d/block_AMT_ttyS0.conf #Type Path Mode UID GID Age Argument z /dev/ttyS0 0600 - - - - However, after boot I still have woodstock:~ # l /dev/ttyS0 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 Mar 6 10:18 /dev/ttyS0 Is 'z' the wrong command? According to the manpage it should change modes of existing files/directories, and the serial module is loaded before systemd starts the tmpfiles scripts. [opensuse] Grubby fingers in the boot straps

I seem to have broken grub. Or maybe it broke itself. I have tried to re-install it a few times with yast2 bootloader, but it is failing with "no menuentry" or I think that's what it says, it vanishes quickly. Here is the history: I installed Manjaro on a partition, /dev/sda2. Opensuse grub detects this, but it does not boot properly because Manjaro likes its own grub. So I installed Manjaro grub on /dev/sda2, and then I chainloaded it successfully from Opensuse grub. I then tried to make a chainloader menu entry in /etc/40_custom, but that didn't work so I thought nothing more of it. But today when I booted the system, opensuse grub failed with an error, then went straight to Manjaro grub. I tried to remove anything I added to /etc/40_custom, and I tried to re-install grub as I said. I also ran grub2-script-check but it does not report errors. How do I re-install grub with the default configuration? I found this guide [1] to migrate your database to Galera, but I didn't really go through the details. I just thought this could probably be of help for you. Considering the package question, I believe you need the 10.2.13 version of mariadb (so an upgrade) and additionally install mariadb-galera, you can find that in [2]. This creates a file in /etc/my.cnf.d/50-galera.cnf containing the required wsrep (and other) config options. The repo mentioned in [2] is not the official repo, I assume you could also use the official repo for leap-15 [3], it's the same version (10.2.13), but I don't know if that is an option and if this could lead to data inconsistencies or other problems. So be careful as I did not test it! Maybe someone with more experience can also shed some light on this. Leap 42.3 provides the traditional Ethernet device names, like eth0. I am one of the strange guys who actually liked the new names that were hardware dependent. What is the best way to get those names on Leap 42.3? I have seen suggestions of a kernel command line option, of udev rules, and I bet a bet others. Hi *, I have two machines running Leap 42.3. Both used to provide a graphical login for quite a long time, but they were turned into pure server machines, that don't need graphics any longer. What is the easiest way to get rid of all programs and libs belonging to kde, gnome, lxde, ...? I tried to uninstall the according patterns, but the list of packages to be uninstalled contains programs and libs that are vital for the system, too. Thx and bye. [opensuse] Permissions, systemd and automount

I am trying to use x-systemd.automount,noauto in /etc/fstab to set up automount of disks. For the most part it works fine. I am struggling with permissions. When the disk is, say, CIFS, I can add uid=roger to /etc/fstab and the files will belong to roger. This is because the file system itself does not have user ownership of individual files. Or at least the CISF driver makes it so. If I want this to work with ext4, this seems not to work as I would like. The problem is the top-level mount point. I do not seem to have any control over the permissions. So if a user inserts a disk, they cannot make any files in the top level of the disk. But that is what I need. When we were not using automount, the mount point's permissions were whatever the disk file had. They were not changed by the mount command. Autofs sets the permissions to rwx------. We really want to use autofs. If the disks are not inserted and they are in /etc/fstab, the system will not boot. Autofs solves this nicely. Any ideas on how to sort out permissions when systemd is managing autofs? I have googled, but all seems to discuss when you set up autofs yourself. I can do that. I am on working on my laptop (#2 below, a dell XPS). It has a 500gb SSD which is partitioned for dual boot windows and opensuse. My root partition is almost completely full, and I am wondering what I can do about it to make more space. It has saved my back many times. So, I want to keep the 22.5G drives equally sized, and I don't want to reduce the "home" partition of 331.7G. I noticed that /dev/sda3 for windows is only using about 45G on it. Since I hardly ever use windows, I was thinking of trying to take 14G off of that drive, split it into 2 partitions, and somehow append those extra 7G to each of the root drives in order to give my root more room. Is that something that is even possible? Does anyone have better recommendations? Like splitting off some of the directories from my root drive that take up a lot of memory, and moving them to the new partitions, and then just symlinking to those partitions in order to continue running? I don't really know the best course of action here. Hi ! I have continuous problem with Leap 42.3 / Firefox 58 can't play some youtube videos - "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available". Some effect with both SUSE builds and bins from Mozilla site. This tool https://www.youtube.com/html5 Detects H264 as unsupported format. [opensuse] How to Remove Packman

I received a security update for Lame, but it wouldn't install due to vendor change. I decided to remove Packman as I only use it for playing MP3 and it doesn't seem to be necessary for that anymore. So I went into yast2 sw_single and selected the repository view, and selected Packman and then selected Delete all packages in this list. I had to resolve dependencies which I did by selecting downgrade or de-installation in every case. One of the things it removed was Chromium. I then disabled Packman, and re-installed Chromium. But this seemed to re-install libmp3lame from Packman even though it was disabled. So I removed it again and then removed Packman, then re-installed Chromium. This time it installed libmp3lame0 from openSUSE-Leap-42.3-Update. Hello listers, I am trying to figure out if Text-to-Speech (TTS) will be fully functional in Leap 15.0. I use TTS (KDE) via Jovie in Leap 42.3. It is quite functional. However Jovie is no longer maintained and is being replaced by Qtspeech. As far as I can gather, Qtspeech is functional as of Qt5.8. If I understood the info from the Qt project. Which version of Qt is going to be in Leap 15.0? I looked through the 15.0 project page and OS wiki and through the Leap 15.0 repo packages but I could not figure it out. I know Qtspeech is eventually replacing Jovie, but in which version of KDE? And which version of KDE is going to be in 15.0? I am not quite sure where to look for more clarity. The relationship between Qt, Plasma and the KDE environment has become extremely confusing to me, especially with my visual impairment. I will have to upgrade to 15.0 sometime this year since the EOL of 42.3 is approaching. The question boils down to - will text-to-speech be functional in Leap 15.0 (KDE)? And if so, will it be based on Jovie or Qtspeech? This is a critical question for me, since I can not use the computer without TTS. I looked through the KDE accessibility pages but they are hopelessly outdated.
