[opensuse] dual boot mounting and virtual machines

Is there a way to mount a linux partition in a linux virtual machine on a windows host? The idea is, sometimes I have to boot into windows on my laptop. Most of the time I am in linux, but occasionally I need a true windows environment, without the overhead of a windows virtual machine running in a linux host. When running windows, I have a program that allows me to see and read files on my ext4 partition on the laptop, but it is buggy and performs poorly. Instead, I would like to have a virtual machine running opensuse on my windows host and mount my ext4 partitions on that virtual machine, even though they don't mount in windows without special software. That way I could access my data files from my linux partition, use the applications I am used to that only run on linux, but still be able to use windows. It would not be my normal mode of operation, but it would give me a lot of flexibility. The barrier seems to be figuring out how to get a virtual machine to recognize the file system of the physical hard drive, rather than only recognizing virtual drives. [opensuse] How to get eth0 up early in boot process

I am trying to use netconsole to examine some problems I am having booting certain laptops. I am running opensuse 42.3 with generic 4.18.7 kernel configured to include netconsole. It supports edge-triggered and level-triggered interfaces.) I looked at dmesg and netconsole is trying eth0: at 2.348515 sec after boot. The first other mention I see of eth0: is at 9.739663 sec. The message is: [ 9.739663] alx 0000:3c:00.0 eth0: Qualcomm Atheros AR816x/AR817x Ethernet [a4:4c:c8:5e:e0:12] which I assume is just recognition if loading the driver. From sudo journalctl -b | grep eth0: Sep 24 22:02:01 dfpc60 wicked[942]: eth0 up Wicked seems to appear about half a second after netconsole looks for eth0: Is there something I can do in systemd, the eth0: configuration, or elsewhere to get wicked to load eth0 earlier? I was a little surprised that netconsole did not go back and try again a little later. [opensuse] XFS mount problem

We had a very brief power-glitch last night, but it was enough to cause my PC to reboot. But the reboot didn't come up cleanly. It was complaining about not being able to mount an XFS filesystem that I use for storing recorded TV programmes. In fact mount claims 'wrong fs type': # mount -v /srv/live-tv/ mount: /srv/live-tv: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/mint_vg-live--tv_lv, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. I tried to run xfs_check but it doesn't seem to be in the repositories so I tried xfs_repair -n: # xfs_repair -n /dev/dm-3 Phase 1 - find and verify superblock... Phase 2 - using internal log - zero log... ALERT: The filesystem has valuable metadata changes in a log which is being ignored because the -n option was used. Expect spurious inconsistencies which may be resolved by first mounting the filesystem to replay the log. - scan filesystem freespace and inode maps... sb_ifree 81, counted 80 sb_fdblocks 12504226, counted 12276402 - found root inode chunk Phase 3 - for each AG... - scan (but don't clear) agi unlinked lists... - process known inodes and perform inode discovery... - agno = 0 imap claims a free inode 135 is in use, would correct imap and clear inode - agno = 1 - agno = 2 - agno = 3 - process newly discovered inodes... Phase 4 - check for duplicate blocks... - setting up duplicate extent list... - check for inodes claiming duplicate blocks... - agno = 0 - agno = 1 entry "Coronation Street Omnibus.ts" at block 0 offset 3848 in directory inode 96 references free inode 135 would clear inode number in entry at offset 3848... - agno = 3 - agno = 2 No modify flag set, skipping phase 5 Phase 6 - check inode connectivity... - traversing filesystem ... entry "Coronation Street Omnibus.ts" in directory inode 96 points to free inode 135, would junk entry bad hash table for directory inode 96 (no data entry): would rebuild - traversal finished ... - moving disconnected inodes to lost+found ... Phase 7 - verify link counts... No modify flag set, skipping filesystem flush and exiting. The mount is being tried against fstab: # grep live-tv /etc/fstab #LABEL=LiveTV /srv/live-tv xfs noatime,noacl 0 2 /dev/mint_vg/live-tv_lv /srv/live-tv xfs noatime,noacl 0 2 I normally mount this filesystem by label but I commented that out to get the system to boot and I added the /dev line as a more basic method to see if it helped, but it gives the same error. lv/pv/vgscan all report everything normal. This is Leap 15.0 I'm a bit stuck now; my XFS foo is not strong today, it seems. Can anybody suggest what my next steps should be? [opensuse] List all installed packages for a new install

Hi all- I'm re-installing openSUSE on a new (bigger) drive. My thought is (after backing up my home directory) to use zypper to list all installed packages to a file and then later use that file (and zypper) to re-install those packages on the new drive. Has anyone done this? [opensuse] programs in /sbin -- why aren't they in /usr/sbin?

Some of the programs in /sbin don't seem to make sense and I was wondering why they had not been moved to /usr/sbin Specifically: (part of info package): /sbin/install-info (part of rpcbind package): /sbin/pmap_set2 /sbin/rpcbind /sbin/rpcinfo There may be others, but these stood out because they require libraries in /usr/lib64 -- and it seems a bit intuitive that if a programs's libraries are in /usr/lib64 that would expect the program to be in /usr/[s]bin. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner(a)opensuse.org

That was too slow. Also of note -- the standard linux scheduler 'CFQ' defeats all of the parallel operations of XFS, but of course you knew that right? There have been quite a few improvements for smal files since 2010. There's also quite a bit of work going in to support btrfs features in xfs to support deduplication and volume snapping. [opensuse] download.opensuse.org down - reporting?

All - I note that download.opensuse.org has been down, responding with 403/Forbidden errors at all URLs, for about the past hour. (I'm sure that now that I've sent this, it will magically come back up.) I've searched around, but am unclear: Is there a proper reporting venue for an outage like this?
