[opensuse] Wired Internet Gone

Hi, last Thursday evening my DSL signal to my house went dead, and didn't come back. Today the repair man came and replaced a connection module in the box on the wall outside of my house. Voila, DSL signal tested good up to the modem next to the computer inside the house. But the DSL modem didn't show that there was a signal. So the repairman replaced the DSL modem with a new modem with integrated wifi, and I was able to log on to the internet in Win7, WinXP, but not openSuse. He left, and I thought that I just had to configure something in yast to make it work. But it's not working, and the settings seem to be correct for the network. I can't connect to the internet on any computer using openSuse with a wired connection. I can connect using wifi with my laptop, but even it won't connect with a wired connection to the internet. I'm using opensuse leap 15.0 with KDE Frameworks 5.45.0. I will need some help to resolve this, so thanks in advance. Redirect permanent / https://www.mysite.com/ or RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_NAME} =www.mysite.com RewriteRule ^ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [END,NE,R=permanent] So these are two different ways of performing a redirect. I have always used the former in my config. I notice that the latter method using the Rewrite engine is automatically generated by certbot. So which is better? What are the pros an cons of each method? Why does certbot choose to use the Rewrite engine? Can anyone please enlighten me? [opensuse] Two HP devices - compatibility question

Hi, I wander about Leap compatibility of these two devices: - HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28nw (T6B80A), or - HP LaserJet Pro M452nw (CF388A). Is there anyone on this list who can share some user experience? The first one is multifunctional and I wander very much about scanning part. Never used scanner on network before. Vendor pages are not clear on Linux support, neither on printing nor on scanning side. The second looks like more serious hardware. It's just printer (no MF) and vendor pages suggest that OpenSUSE is supported. I checked on https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Hardware, and found nothing about these devices. Can anyone confirm that any of these teo work on Leap? TIA & best regards, Radule

[opensuse] What changed in the 10/2/18 updates to grub2 causing unwanted os-proper to run?

All, Updates dated 10/2/18 in /etc/grub cause os-prober to run when it has not run in the year prior adding a windows entry to my grub.cfg? This is completely unwanted behavior. What changed? os-prober was installed automatically when Leap 42.3 was installed, but has been well-behaved up until these 10/2/18 updates. Why was this changed? Is it better to rpm -e os-prober? Or, can /etc/default/grub be trusted not to be overwritten so that GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER="true" will be respected going forward? -- David C. It also has an Apache server. So I try to watch movies on my tablet, served from my home server. I select a file using the default web brower, tap on it, choose play directly with VLC, and it plays directly without downloading the file in full first. It works fine. I can also select a point of the movie at random and go from that point. But I can't do the same on my laptop, it can't cope despite having much more power. Intel video. First I try with "kodi". Kodi can add video sources: I try "http" and "ssh". Both work, but after a bit the audio gets out of sync with the video. Same problem if I select ssh source (actually sftp). CPU load seems to be 80..90%. So I try vlc: vlc "http://Isengard.valinor/.../file.avi" It plays, but also here the sound gets out of sync, and frames seem to be missing. So I download the file with wget, then play it directly with VLC: plays fine this time. Local play. Then I try another type of remote "download": sshfs cer@Isengard.valinor:/ ~/fusermount/ which mounts the remote system at directory ~/fusermount/, and videos play fine. CPU load seems to be lower, around 60..70% Most of the problems happen with videos recorded from digital tv stream (mpeg). But the same videos play fine when I use fusermount instead of telling VLC to do the downloading. Kodi using fusermount with the same video file gets out of sync. What should I look at? I can not increase the power of the laptop, and anyway, the tablet seems to handle the situation much better. Well, it is also a somewhat smaller display... Ideas? - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. [opensuse] OT: RGB Video Conversion

Not strictly open SUSE, but technically kind of related as I will be using an openSUSE PC in this set up. Does anyone have any experience with Extron RGB devices? I have some games consoles and a dvd player which all use either Composite / S-Video / YPbPr / RGsB / RGBS and also a PC with a VGA output which is RGBHV. I intend to connect all these devices to an Extron MVX 84 VGA A switch. The first problem is than not all of these signals are RGB. Extron have suggested the DVS 304 which they say will take all the above signals from my switch and convert them to either RGBS or RGBHV. This is great because I have two monitors I can use. One accepts RGBHV (VGA Monitor) and the other accepts RGBS (CRT TV). The problem I have if you may have spotted it is that I have two different sync signal frequencies. The PC being VGA is 31KHz H-sync (meant for VGA) and all of the other devices are 15.6KHz (meant for RGB TVs). So what I want to know is; can I use a device such as the Extron DVS 304 to convert all of the input sync frequencies to either 15.6KHz or 31KHz so that I can use one of my two available monitors? Unfortunately my two most used computers have XFS filesystem, so I am in a bit trouble. Before moving - to my regret - to something other cloud storage, I would like to ask your opininon: how do you manage this question. [opensuse] problem with network startup and netcosole

I am running opensuse 42.3 with a 4.18.7 kernel. I have worked on this netconsole problem for almost two months. I realize it is not part of the standard distribution, but I feel it should work to allow one to record crash dumps. I am currently looking for: 1. a person with expertise in network startup and netconsole; 2. a person that will build a system with netconsole to verify my problem. Below is my setup, first the kernel command line: linux netconsole=64001@192.168.7.60/eth0,64001@192.168.7.55/34:e6:d7:01:2a:dd loglevel=8 and then my receiving script: sudo nc -v -u -l 64001 | tee netconsole.log In summary, netconsole works fine, up to the point it hangs at around 12us after boot. Before the hang the destination output matches that presented by dmesg. I looked in /var/log/messages for an entry corresponding to the time netconsole halts and I find: systemd[1]: Started wicked AutoIPv4 supplicant service. And I do not believe the destination is hanging, because if I reboot the source, the output log on the destination continues. Messages such as those generated by ("modprobe floppy" = no such device) also do not appear on the destination, but do appear in dmesg. The output also continues on the destination if I issue a command to generate a panic, "echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger". So something in the panic must be fixing netconsole. If I run the module version, it behaves as expected printing the "no such device" messages from "modprobe floppy", and others that I found suggested on the net. I have read the Linux Device Drivers book, and asked the question on opensuse_kernel, kernelnewbies and this list. From what I can discover, netconsole is a driver stacked on printk, so anything printk issues should go to netconsole. Most respondents to my queries tell me that the log level is incorrect, but I feel if the messages are appearing in the dmesg dump the log level must be correct. The "Started wicked AutoIPv4 supplicant service" message coincident with the freeze makes me believe that the opensuse system startup is corrupting the linkage netconsole has established. [opensuse] How to disable synaptiks/touchpad in KDE4?

Hello: This occurs in openSUSE 13.1 with its default KDE4 (4.11.5). Whenever I login to KDE session a message window pops up. Originally I did not have this message after login, it started only some time ago. The title of the window is: "Error - synaptiks" The message in the window is: "No touchpad found No Touchpad found in this system. If the system has a touchpad, please make sure that the synaptiks drive is properly installed and configured. If your touchpad is not found, though the driver is installed and configured correctly, please compile detailed information about your touchpad hardware and report this issue to the issue tracker." I don't have touchpad attached to the computer. Why does KDE try to start it? I searched for touchpad in KDE4 settings (systemsettings) and found only one instance of touchpad called "touchpad configuration" under Hardware/Input devices/Touchpad. But that shows the very same message as the above, and there is no any option to disable touchdpad. I found that in system tray I have a synaptiks icon (little triangle) but its menu's "Touchpad on" line is not checked and the "Configure synaptiks" line is grayed out. I checked yast too but couldn't find synaptiks or touchap setting there. How can I disabel it and get rid of this annoying popup message? [opensuse] SOT Internet issues

Something strange is going on. I'm on Spectrum cable. The advertised bandwidth is 200Mbps. Since most of may LAN is 100Mbps Ethernet, I don't see that speed. If I plug my laptop (Gigabit Ethernet) directly into the cable modem I see the adverised bandwidth, but several things fail: fetch from Google Apps e-mail (Ruby script), outgoing mail to same account (Thunderbird), and updating Ruby gems (gem and bundle). All error messages indicate a timeout after a half minute to minute. There may be others but these I know. Web sites work fine. Outgoing e-mail thru noise.org (local Mail Service Provider) works fine. Plug into the WiFi router w/ NAT connected to the cable modem and everything works fine. This is on 42.3. I'm using OpenSuSE's firewall and Portsentry (3rd party). The logs seem to show a possible correlation with the failed services timing and TCP SYN/Normal scan from various ripe.net addresses (Portsentry). Also blocked TCP connections (SuSEfirewall2). Turning off Portsentry does not fix the problem. Stopping the firewall doesn't help either. So possibly this is a server policy to check WHOIS on connections? And with my laptop, the firewall is blocking ripe.net, the usual WHOIS provider? [opensuse] Desktop constantly momentarily pausing (nvidia)

Hello, I recently installed Leap 15.0 on a workstation that has an nvidia graphics card installed (Quadro K2200), and since I've been using it for graphics work I've noticed that it continuously pauses. Even while editing a file or typing this email the entire screen pauses for half a second - every 5 seconds. To say this is irritating would be an understatement. I've tested both the main Leap 15.0 nvidia repository and the CUDA repository for SLES, and the behavior is the same. I'm currently running the following packages from the nvidia repository: nvidia-computeG04 390.87-lp150.10.1 nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default 390.87_k4.12.14_lp150.11-lp150.10.1 nvidia-glG04 390.87-lp150.10.1 x11-video-nvidiaG04 390.87-lp150.10.1 Does anyone here have any experience debugging this issue? Also, please let me know If there is a better place to report this. Hi All, So I have just set up ssl on my new web server as you may have seen from my other thread. Now in the default apache config for HTTP I have simply added the following to redirect to the virtualhost I wish to see as default: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_NAME} =www.mysite.com RewriteRule ^ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [END,NE,R=permanent] So now what happens when I type in the IP or local hostname of the server, and by extension any other ServerName which is not defined in the apache config, I get redirected to www.mysite.com But I wish to achieve this with the default HTTPS site too. However I get a self signed certificate error if I use the default SSL certs, and also if I use the ssl cert for www.mysite.com it says bad domain. Which I expected. So my question is, how can I redirect all HTTPS requests by default to my www.mysite.com site without getting certificate errors? Can this be done? Hi all, I have recently learned of letsencrypt.org and their service sslforfree.com. Does anyone use this? I have just set up a certificate with ssl for free on own website and it works great. No 'This website is improperly configured' message. (even though it is properly configured, just self-signed). The only problem I have with SSL For Free is that the certificates expire after 90 days. I can understand why they do this so as not to have lots of unused certificates but as I work on many sites any manually renewing them every 3 months would be a right pain in the proverbial. Is there a way to obtain a free certificate from SSL For Free and have it renew automatically? Was trying the rc1 version of util-linux 2.33, and it has an option to link several of its utils statically. [opensuse] Claws-Mail crash when using ProtonMail bridge

My MUA is Claws-Mail 3.17.1 from build.opensuse.org/server:mail running on Leap 15 and KDE plasma. I am testing ProtonMail Bridge, and find that CM segfaults when trying to switch folders in my ProtonMail account. The folk at claws-Mail think it's the openSUSE version of libetpan (1.8-lp150.1.2) being out-of-date, and that newer releases have this bug fixed. [opensuse] Missing possibility to choose Windows at startup

A few snapshots earlier I suddenly could not choose for Windows at startup anymore. I sometimes needs that. At the start of the snapshot DVD 20181002 I could choose for Windows In Windows I deleted all openSUSE partitions. After that I used the same DVD to install Tumbleweed as fresh as possible. After restart I got - to my big surprise - Windows, with no possibility to choose Tumbleweed. I just discovered IPv6 privacy address are not enabled in 15.0 by default. Why is this? It's necessary to add sysctl net.ipv6.conf.eth0.use_tempaddr=2 to /etc/sysctl.conf to enable them. This is on systems using Yast to configure networks. On a local network, what would be the preferred way for one system to shut down or reboot another system? Something over the network. I am thinking that a systemd service on the master system (openSUSE) would control this other system (Linux - openSUSE or Ubuntu). ssh? I have played with rexec/rcmd and such before. I do not need anything fancy. Is there a way to mount a linux partition in a linux virtual machine on a windows host? The idea is, sometimes I have to boot into windows on my laptop. Most of the time I am in linux, but occasionally I need a true windows environment, without the overhead of a windows virtual machine running in a linux host. When running windows, I have a program that allows me to see and read files on my ext4 partition on the laptop, but it is buggy and performs poorly. Instead, I would like to have a virtual machine running opensuse on my windows host and mount my ext4 partitions on that virtual machine, even though they don't mount in windows without special software. That way I could access my data files from my linux partition, use the applications I am used to that only run on linux, but still be able to use windows. It would not be my normal mode of operation, but it would give me a lot of flexibility. The barrier seems to be figuring out how to get a virtual machine to recognize the file system of the physical hard drive, rather than only recognizing virtual drives. I am trying to use netconsole to examine some problems I am having booting certain laptops. I am running opensuse 42.3 with generic 4.18.7 kernel configured to include netconsole. From sudo journalctl -b | grep eth0: Sep 24 22:02:01 dfpc60 wicked[942]: eth0 up Wicked seems to appear about half a second after netconsole looks for eth0: Is there something I can do in systemd, the eth0: configuration, or elsewhere to get wicked to load eth0 earlier? I was a little surprised that netconsole did not go back and try again a little later. We had a very brief power-glitch last night, but it was enough to cause my PC to reboot. But the reboot didn't come up cleanly. It was complaining about not being able to mount an XFS filesystem that I use for storing recorded TV programmes. In fact mount claims 'wrong fs type': # mount -v /srv/live-tv/ mount: /srv/live-tv: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/mint_vg-live--tv_lv, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. I tried to run xfs_check but it doesn't seem to be in the repositories so I tried xfs_repair -n: # xfs_repair -n /dev/dm-3 Phase 1 - find and verify superblock... Phase 2 - using internal log - zero log... ALERT: The filesystem has valuable metadata changes in a log which is being ignored because the -n option was used. This is Leap 15.0 I'm a bit stuck now; my XFS foo is not strong today, it seems. Can anybody suggest what my next steps should be? Hi all- I'm re-installing openSUSE on a new (bigger) drive. My thought is (after backing up my home directory) to use zypper to list all installed packages to a file and then later use that file (and zypper) to re-install those packages on the new drive. Has anyone done this? I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this. It's not really a programming question. It's more about a difference between how two distros make the same libraries. I have an SDK with a closed-source library that I need to use on openSUSE 42.3. The supplier (Flir, formerly Point Grey) support Ubuntu as their Linux distro. Generally, the libraries find all that they need on openSUSE 42.3. At least ldd is indicating that, generally, libs and entry points are available. With the exception of ffmpeg. And here the problem is not so much the versions of the libraries, but instead how these libraries are identifying themselves internally. The Ubuntu libraries are claiming things like this: ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31: /usr/lib64/libavutil-ffmpeg.so.54: version `LIBAVUTIL_FFMPEG_54' not found (required by ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31) ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31: /usr/lib64/libswscale-ffmpeg.so.3: version `LIBSWSCALE_FFMPEG_3' not found (required by ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31) ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31: /usr/lib64/libavcodec-ffmpeg.so.56: version `LIBAVCODEC_FFMPEG_56' not found (required by ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31) ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31: /usr/lib64/libavformat-ffmpeg.so.56: version `LIBAVFORMAT_FFMPEG_56' not found (required by ./libptgreyvideoencoder.so.2.12.3.31) So, a library such as /usr/lib64/libavutil-ffmpeg.so.54 is wanted and is found on my system. Unfortunately, the tag LIBAVUTIL_FFMPEG_54 is not found inside that library. So, I thought I would look to see what is in the openSUSE library. I see this: LIBAVUTIL_54 I do not see LIBAVUTIL_FFMPEG_54. Could it be that openSUSE and Ubuntu use slightly different text for this flag/value? Note that I had this issue previously when experimenting with similar libs from Flir. I want to make a better solution than I did before, which turned out to be lib dependency hell. When I installed the Ubuntu version of these libs, many other ones were also needed, as the Ubuntu libs were not all satisfied with the openSUSE libs. And these led to conflicts. I am hoping that perhaps I can make these 4 libraries in such a way as to make the Ubuntu libs happy, while keeping the majority of the openSUSE libs. That might be wishful thinking. I have Googled a bit. I don't really see anything related to this. The openSUSE builds in OBS seem to be using the files as is. I do not see that LIBAVUTIL_FFMPEG_54 is being modified into something else by openSUSE. So maybe Ubuntu change these values? I'm less familiar with Ubuntu's build system. So I thought I would start asking on openSUSE lists since that is where I want to run things. I'm optimistic. [opensuse] Any Experience with LTO-8 Tape?

Hi Folks, It looks like using tape for backup (in my situation) is finally becoming reasonable again. LTO-8 supports 13TB/tape uncompressed. Does anyone have experience with more recent LTO tapes? It looks like the interfaces are SAS or Fiber. The last tapes I used were SCSI, do Leap's "mt" commands work okay with SAS? How about shelf-life of recorded tape? Reliability? [opensuse] Status of KDE Knights (Chess)

I am not able to understand the status of Knights. The program worked well in KDE4 but it seams the program has not been ported to Plasma 5? Anybody has some info on this? I am considering installing Leap on my Macbook Air, 2013 11" version. It has the Broadcom BCM4360 wifi, which I realise is not fully supported.
