[opensuse] Steam Fails to Launch

Hello, Having trouble launching Steam after an update the other day. The "Verifying Install" window pops up right after I click the icon and promptly closes with no error. I did do a 'zypper in -f steam' to try reinstalling Steam but I still get the errors. [opensuse] fyi only - out of memory with 128GB of RAM!

All, I just thought this was worth sharing. I've got the 128GB RAM PC I built up last spring (much discussion on this list). I don't have a swap space setup because who could ever use that much RAM. The OOM background tool just kicked in and killed one of my tasks! Top agrees and says I only have 10GB of RAM free (after killing my task). Setting up swap space now! Background: I have a couple of Tumbleweed (intel and ARM) machines at work. These are behind the corporate firewall. This firewall scans every file download for viri and the like. If a file is suspect, you don't get it. I have encountered a problem where a couple of openSUSE RPMS look suspicious to this check, and are blocked from download. At least this is what the IT guys feel is happening. The specific files change. But if a file fails, it will always fail. So it is consistent. For example, at the time of this message, this file is not allowed: http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/suse/i686/kernel-pae-4.9.9… Another unpopular file is kernel-firmware. And, the Windows versions of Tcl and Tk. But others pop up occasionally. I had thought that I would just grab the files from home, put them on my machine, and all will be fine. The problem is that Tumbleweed is quite active. The files change over the day. So getting the ones that cause the complaint is difficult. When I get back to work, new files may complain. Question: The IT guys have offered to white list a site where the files will be passed through. So I thought I would suggest download.opensuse.org. The problem is that zypper uses mirrors. So the downloads may not actually come from there. I thought I would just specify a local mirror in the URL. Unfortunately, mirrors seem not to mirror everything on download.opensuse.org. So, I thought I might use the mirror URL for the repos that the mirror has. But that leaves the other repos. Like http://download.opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed/, which I do not see on the mirrors I have checked. Is it possible (even though I understand that it is perhaps bad netiquette) to tell zypper to not use a mirror? At least this may allow me to verify that, when white listed, the files from a repo can be obtained. I need to read a contemporary book, search it, bookmark it, and write notes in it. Searching is the one thing that really requires an ebook. It will almost certainly be available only in a DRM format, but I may have a choice. I'd prefer a native reader, though if only Web based ones are available, that would work. Any experience? [opensuse] Fork fails with Leap 42.2 on AMD FX machines

All, I have a couple machines running AMD FX CPUs. Both are running Gigabyte motherboards. One is a GA-990FXA-UD5 with 32G of RAM and an FX(tm)-8350 (8 core). The second is a 970A-UD3P with 32G of RAM and an FX(tm)-6300 (6 core). The 990FXA uses the 990FX northbridge, the 970A uses the 970 northbridge. Both use the SB950 southbridge. I upgraded the 970A machine from Leap 42.1 to 42.2 several weeks ago, and immediately started having problems with Google Chrome / chromium crashes, as well as a lot of "bash: fork: retry: No child processes" from shells. I tried upgrading to several different kernels (all from OBS), with similar results. I also tried playing with the IOMMU settings, both in BIOS and in the kernel parameters. The problems persisted (and still do). Last night, I upgraded the 990FX box, and am now having the same problems. I was hoping the the 990FX chipset would be different enough, but apparently it's not. At work, I'm running Leap 42.2 on several Intel boxes, and I've not seen this problem, so I'm guessing that it's linked to either the CPU or, I think more likely, the chipset. I don't think that it's relevant, but both boxes are running ATI / AMD video cards: Radeon R7 370 and 360, respectively. Various searches of the mailing list archives Somebody else must have run into this, I can't believe that I'm the first. dmesg (and /var/log/messages (I use syslog-ng)) are surprisingly quiet about it all. The most common things I see are messages like: trap invalid opcode ip:5608d1232a92 sp:7ffe373a73d0 error:0 in chrome[5608cd3fb000+67d5000]traps: If anybody has any suggestions, requires more information, etc., please don't hesitate. [opensuse] AMD Carrizo Firmware with Leap 42.2

Hello everybody, I just upgraded to an AMD Carrizo notebook. It works fairly decent. Just the fan runs a bit to often for my taste. glxinfo|grep vendor says: server glx vendor string: SGI client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI OpenGL vendor string: X.Org It seems as if no hw-driver is loaded. So I upgraded to kernel-stable 4.9 and its equivalent kernel-firmware. But to no improvement. When I look up /lib/firmware/radeon "CARRIZO" does not show up.
