Hello, I just got (from china) a smart card reader and I don't get how I can make it work... lsusb gives only one new line when I connect it: Bus 004 Device 009: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. [opensuse] Good emacs - reference for sane ~/.emacs and ~/.gnu-emacs-custom

All, no flames, As a challenge, I decided to switch to emacs. I've been dabbling with it on/off for about a week. I can only go so far before I have to just put it up for a while and go back to my usual editor. I need to find a couple of good references, that are shorted and more concise than www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual and www.emacswiki.org/emacs. I need a good cheat-sheet and a howto on setting the emacs defaults so I'm not continually spending 1/2 hour or hour at a time chasing down issues like how to set default tabs and indention, tabify options, etc.. I like the https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/refcards/pdf/refcard.pdf as a cheat-sheet, but I does nothing for helping with basic config, etc.. Does anybody have a favorite link or two that would be a good reference for setting the options in ~/.emacs and ~/.gnu-emacs-custom? I've gotten tabs sorted out and navigated the difference between indent-tabs-mode, edit-tab-stops, tab-stop-list, c-default-style, c-basic-offset, etc.... settings, but I need to be able to find that type information in a concise form rather than the .el sprinklings throughout the gnu manual. I guess I'm just looking for a good "long time linux user way to shorten the emacs setup and config learning curve" type manual. Anybody have a favorite? -- David C. [opensuse] A small nuisance I'm seeing with double boot of Windows 10 and openSUSE 13.1.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hi, First I explain how I have setup booting of this laptop. BIOS, not UEFI. Traditional partitioning. MBR: generic. partioning (numbers as in fdisk): 1 -> Win boot 2 -> Windows 10 3 -> old HP recovery 4 -> extended, marked bootable. Contains Grub loader. 5 -> swap 6 -> Linux /boot 7 -> root (/) (openSUSE 13.1) So, the BIOS loads the MBR program, this searches for the first bootable partition, sees it is #4, loads the first sector there, which is grub code, which takes control and boots either Linux or Windows as I choose. Now, the nuisance. When Windows (I boot it about once a month) tries to do certain updates (not others) it says that the update failed to be applied for some obscure reason (no, they are unable to figure it out in their help sites). I figured long ago that this is because it does not see partition #1 as bootable. Ie, that Windows is not in control of the boot process. When this happens, the remedial procedure is: Boot Linux, mark partition #1 bootable, unmark #4, boot machine, now without grub in the way. Windows downloads again the updates, reboots, applies them. Boot from external USB stick with Linux, and change mark back to partition #4 to reactivate grub. Boot machine now normally. With Windows 7 this procedure I needed to apply only once in years, for the service pack. But with Windows 10 this is happening more often: there has been a SP already, and another normal update that required this procedure. Twice in almost a month. This is becoming a nuisance. So I wonder if there is another method, where it is Windows which thinks it is in control and presents a menu asking what to boot. I have done this previously with Windows 7 and 2008, using a program for the purpose that configures Windows own boot system. But I have been told it doesn't work with Windows 10. I have not tried it yet, I have to find out first the name of such program, which I have forgotten... BSD or BSC, perhaps :-? Ah! It is BCDedit... No, easyBCD! The article in the Wikipedia is not clear if W10 is supported. I'll have to try, I figure. After I do a real backup. What do you think? Can someone delete this fritz.box bozo from the list? When ever I post a message, I get bounces. [opensuse] HP Ultrium LTO Compression

Hi, I am struggling to back up using LTO hardware compression in linux (the drives and tapes have been tried in windows and work as expected). I am using Hp Storageworks 232 lto1 / 448 lto2 / 920 lto3 and 3000 lto5 and a HP DAT72 drive on Leap 42.1 all with the same problem I have tried mt with the datcompression option and it says it is on for all my drives I have tried mtst with the compression option which does nothing at all with no output Also my drives are /dev/st0 st1 st2 and st3 also listed as /dev/st*1 /dev/st*m and /dev/st*a A quick google say these are different modes. What are these modes? Is one to enable the hardware compression? I am able to write to tapes and restore using tar -cvWf /dev/st* /srv/mydata/something but it does not even allow the native tape capacity (e.g. lto3 is native 400gb and I can't even fit 350GB on this tape (even after mt -f /dev/st3 erase 1) I have gone through HP's manual and there is no information on hardware compression. Does anyone know how to use hardware compression on LTO drives in linux? [opensuse] apache-coredump on OpenSuSE leap 42.1

Hello list Since updating from 13.2 to leap i'm hunting a strange apache client segfault. So i tried to get an apache2 coredump. I set CoreDumpDirectory an apropriate directory with access permissions for apache user (I made one under /var/lib/wwwrun with permissions 0755 wwwrun www) Then i added * soft core 65536 to my /etc/security/limits.conf then i also defined a core_pattern in /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern But i'm not getting a core file after apache client segfaults. Is there something special to leap i'm unaware of? Felix, this is for you - I have not actually tested it, but I think it's accurate. SR1 = source RAID1 (sda, sdb) DR1 = destination RAID1. First, fail and remove a device on SR1: mdadm --manage SR1 -f /dev/sdb mdadm --manage SR1 -r /dev/sdb. sdb being the disk you wish to remove. The printer symbol appears, then it disappears, the printer gets ready but after that does not print anything. The test page prints well. Solution: go in printer setup options, go to device options: you will see that in leap that is stubbornly set to "language of printer: automatic pdf". Your printer for being able to work will need the setting "ppd from driver" If you set this, for this job it will work instantly and in good quality. But I did not find one way to make the setting stay. So you will have to set it all the time. I would say that this is a real leap problem as the problem does not appear (as so many others) in TW. [opensuse] How can I stop KDE?

Dear All, when I installed SuSE 13.2 yesterday, I made the mistake to answer yes to the question, if KDE should be started immediately. Now, I want to give a second user the possibility to start KDE. But this is not possible because KDE starts automatically for the first user, and I do not know how to drop it. Do I have to re-install SuSE 13.2?
