[opensuse] Don't totally rely on zypper <smilie>

Every morning when I boot up the system, the fist thing I do is to run 'zypper'. Which is what I did this morning. There were a couple of 'patches' to be installed. But then some hours later, while I was looking for a file in YaST, I did a check on updates/upgrades which have to made under the "Package>All Packages>Update if newer packages available" and found a large number of packages to be updated/upgraded. However, most of these were related to LibreOffice, which I install manually and directly from libreoffice.org, I ignored them. But was surprised to see that some 6 packages were listed as needing updating to new versions and all had to do with 'vlc'. The puzzling thing is is that vlc was installed from packman, the updates were to come from packman, and packman has a priority level of 95 set in Yast - which I assumed was also honoured by zypper. Anyway, no big deal re this, but I am flagging the idea that if one is always solely relying on zypper to update/upgrade your system then occasionally use YaST just to keep zypper honest :-) . [opensuse] problems in kernel 4.0 with some USB sticks

Recent readers might recall that in the thread about printers I pointed out that for small quantities of colour printing I make use of a local photoshop rather than buy an inkjet printer and let it get clogged from lack of daily use, or an expensive colour laserjet. I use a USB stick. As it happens this is a freebe handed out at the Novell SUSE openday. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/TImeD3KLbuAsJVYbpDMALOWabReVKoQi93sfoYi8kAfX=w1123… This happens to be a 2G drive. It came with the presentation materials This years model is a 4G and is readable & mountable and recognisable by KDE/Konqueror. The KDE device notifier says nothing is there. Regular readers will also know my opinion on documenting things. I tag each and every USB disk drive since, unlike floppy disks, there isn't label you can write on. Sometimes I can use white-ex but more often then not I need a key-ring tab http://www.selectlocks.com/assets/images/luckyline/605.jpg that may reference my notes but more often that not its enough for a generic description, as is the case here: "2G/Blacks/Photos" This is an exreme case. I have a few other USB devices that are bootable since I created them as install or Live devices under earlier version of Suse or earlier kernels. I look though the UDISK rules and get to wonder ... Why that 4G drive is recognised when the 2G one isn't, since the vendor/model aren't encoded there. [opensuse] sheets problem

Hi Problem on opensuse. I did Yast online update. I have to refresh or wait when e.g. replicating a formula or inserting rows and copying anything on the ground to the sheet is a nightmare. I found this: http://www.quora.com/What-makes-certain-cells-in-Google-Sheets-not-update But it makes no difference. The app that it opens on 4.4 drive is fine, but it's hard working with it. If anyone who uses sheets could help (rather than general answers), that would be great as I'm in the middle of exams and don't have time to answer everyone. [opensuse] Adding additional repo's

When I select "Community Repositories" I get the next error message: Internal error..... [opensuse] Covert image of wave to audio

Hi All, I reckon this is a long shot, but here goes... I have a copy of a recent ECG which I would like to extract into a usable form. Basically, I'd be looking for a program which would take the image file of the trace and output a wav (or other suitable filetype) analogous to an OCR program 'reading' an image to text. Does anyone know of any such software, or even something which would allow me to do it manually? [opensuse] change opensuse email addrs to different provider

I am changing internet providers and am failing to redirect my opensuse mail addresses. I went to novell/attachmate and changed my mail address from roadrunner to gmail and it appears to have set, but I am still receiving list mail to paka(a)opensuse.org via roadrunner (according to mail headers). https://en.opensuse.org/Special:Preferences indicates the desired change? [opensuse] Install OS Tumbleweed to thumbdrive NOT live

Hey all, Since I have a really stable 13.1, but I want try out tumbleweed and plasma 5 I am looking for some help. This is NOT a live dvd. I can put that on the flash drive and boot from it. What I can't do is install programs to it and have them persist. I want to install a full version so I can try and run all the programs that I need to have. I have tried making bootable drive using rufus and and even manually, but no go. When I try and use the install disk about 100 programs won't install and it won't write the boot loader. Does anyone know who maintains http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/ I ask because it seems to stop at 12.2. It is a nice idea and it would be great it it could continue for more releases...
