[opensuse] Jpegs won't render in Firefox

Hi, I updated my version of firefox to the latest version 42.0-2.1-x86_64 from earlier versions, and jpeg pictures won't render on a web page. To troubleshoot the problem, I downgraded the version to 38.4.0-1.1-x86_64 and the jpegs will render again on a web page. Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it in the later versions? [opensuse] Kudos

In lieu of the recent thread on "how crappy Linux is, and how many problems there are," I would like to just give my kudos to the oS and linux developers. Because I really to believe that we tend to be quiet except when we run into problems. (And besides, even if we did give kudos all the time, it wouldn't turn into a 50-post-long thread as different folks suggest different potential fixes...) So from my experience, of using *nix daily at work and home... I rather enjoy running oS 13.1 on my work computer (which I use every single day, overall without problems,) with several of my coworkers saying "I wish that I could do that too, if only program XYZ worked on Linux." I loved being able to pick up an old broken HP TC4400 "tablet" computer that could barely run the Windows XP that it was designed for, and install oS Tumbleweed, and have the thing fly as if it was a brand new computer :) It's awesome having a teeny tiny arm-based single-board computer "server" at home, with a measly 5 watt power requirement, running Debian, doing the exact same thing as my old 120-watt Intel-based server used to. I loved being able to upgrade from oS 11.4 to 12.1 to 13.1, on the same machine, without so much as a hiccup, and without performance degradation. Try doing that with a Windows computer... It's wonderful running SLES on our boxes at work, and the performance and capabilities of those boxes far exceed what we can do on our Windows machines. From patching, upgrades, remote management, added performance/security for not running a GUI, being able to do stuff like "su," the fact that a base OS install takes less than 4GB versus Windows' 40GB+, ... - things just work better. So yes. While I know things aren't always perfect smooth sailing, I wouldn't go back to Windows. [opensuse] Japanese keyboard

Hi, My daughter studies Japanese. When her laptop had OS12.3, I installed something so she could easily type Japanese on a European keyboard (Belgian). That worked fine. She told me this is how it was working : You type the romanised version of the word, and you get the hiragana characters. Then pressing the space-bar gives a choice of possible (kanji ?) characters. A few months ago I installed OS13.2, but I forgot to install that software. Now she's asking for it, but I don't remember what I did to have that Japanese keyboard. Anyone has an idea what it could have been ? I already installed all Japanese fonts I could find via Yast. Also, in a few months she will be studying in Japan for some months. Maybe she could buy a Japanese keyboard, but what would be needed to be able to use that ? Just "System settings"/ "Input devices", add a Japanese keyboard ? Anything special to be aware of ? [opensuse] trouble

Don't you guys see how much *trouble* Linux or at least OpenSuse is? Just being on this list without using Linux makes it clear to me how much amazing much *trouble* this system is every day. A bit of distance makes you appreciate that. How much my current life is pretty much problem free (in that sense) except from some weird anomalies in my Microsoft turd-system I didn't have before. All these emails that come by are of a level of running around with a bucket trying to quench fires here and there and there and there. They are problems that should never even exist. KDE all white as root. What the. I keep being amazed by it, that people subject themselves to such nonsense, that I have in the past, and that I probably will in the future, if there is any future. Which is why I would probably want some mini-linux running in a VM giving me access to the tools, but none of the -at least- user interface problems for a GUI. It's a shame that in my last VM attempt network access from guest to host was *really* slow and apparently caused by some ...limitation of VirtualBox. Linux is so badly contained, its scope so badly designed, that problems everywhere are pretty much guaranteed by its design principles. If you want a system that is rife with problems, Linux is a good way to start. Not a bad contender. People always complained that competing commercial systems from the big vendor at One Microsoft Way were big problem machines, but I never quite understood that. Until this recent time, my Microsoft (...) existence had been completely problem free. Except for the issue that installing a system takes too much time, and there is no good way to reinstall the apps / programs you use onto a new system without all the hassle. And then when you create a system image... well that's another story. I never installed any updates so that is one problem gone. I didn't use anti-virus so that is one problem less. The only big glaring omission that is actually there but not really usable, is symlinks. There are no good symlinks in MS Windows crap. Which just sucks big time. Linux's scope is actually defined as "there is no scope, at least not one that you will know, ever". I believe not many people even understand what "scope" means. I never heard anyone talk of it in the linux world. Or "containment". Well, I guess. It just amazes me what kind of problems come by daily here on this list, problems that all of them should have been solved by someone long ago with proper design "intensives" or "incentives". They are problems people shouldn't be dealing with. Problems that shackle you to the ground, forever fixing stuff that shouldn't even be broken. I guess, that drain your energy and keep you tied to a lesser existence? Linux is typically a system that becomes its own raison d'être. Linux then is the end, not the means. You use Linux in order to improve Linux, but not for actual work. Not for leasure. Not for excitement. Not for play. Not for fun. The promise of those things is somewhere at the end of the road, but it feels like the bloody labyrinth from the Death Gate cycle by Weis & Hickman. In those books a people has been placed inside a very dangerous labyrinth as a form of penitentiary. They were judged to be faulty people in need of an education. So the ones who won the war designed a world with gates and when the conquered people would finally have overcome all challenges, they were assumed or would have proven to now be "decent" people. Which they weren't before. But the magicks of those victorious people kinda didn't work out and the labyrinth turned against its inhabitants and became a terribly and terrifyingly hostile world. And at the end was still the promise of liberation. The ones who could escape the labyrinth could expect a peaceful and abundant life in a better place. But few ever did. Most got stuck and cities arose even within the early levels. They built up their arsenal and equipment and life and perhaps tried to move to the next gate when the time was ripe, but slowly. Because anywhere you ventured was lethal. And Linux feels like that with its promise of happiness at the end of the road. Microsoft is adopting Linux's nature with Windows 10; Windows 10 is at times horribly broken but SOMEDAY PERHAPS everything will in the end work. Just wait long enough for enough updates! And they're being forced down your throat too, these days. I don't even know why Microsoft is even a name still worth mentioning. I don't know why we're not using some Google OS or whatever. [opensuse] YAST uses Ruby? Why can't I do Ruby/Tk?

Yes, YAST has compatibility mode bit it also produces X style graphics in KDE & Gnome etc. But whenever I try using Ruby/Tk it breaks. There's a lot of stuff on the bug in Ruby that causes this but no fixes in distributions, it seems. What's the workaround? Do I have to drill down though the YAST codebase to find this or can someone tell me what the solution to doing Tk style graphics with Ruby is. I inherited a machine from a relative. It was running an old version of OpenSUSE 12.3. I'm new to OpenSUSE. I upgraded it so that it's now running OpenSUSE Leap. It has 4 drives in my desktop. There's a RAID-1 array consisting of those four drives (2 as fallback) cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid0] [raid1] [raid10] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] md126 : active raid1 sdc1[2] sdb1[1] sda1[0] sdd1[3] 1060160 blocks [4/4] [UUUU] bitmap: 0/130 pages [0KB], 4KB chunk across partitions /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 That array's UUID is (e.g.) blkid /dev/md126 -s UUID /dev/md126: UUID="a1234567-0123-0123-0123-ab1234567890" The system's '/boot' partition is on that array. The rest is on an LVM on another array. /etc/fstab UUID=a1234567-0123-0123-0123-ab1234567890 /boot ext4 defaults 0 2 /dev/VG0/SYSTEM / ext4 defaults 1 1 The old system bootloader was 'old' Grub v0.97. I thought the upgrade to Leap would update automatically to Grub2. It didn't. I still have only 'old' Grub package. So now I want to upgrade it to 'new' Grub2 v2.02. I installed the Grub2 packages rpm -qa | grep -i grub2 grub2-x86_64-xen-2.02~beta2-20.10.1.x86_64 grub2-i386-pc-2.02~beta2-20.10.1.x86_64 grub2-2.02~beta2-20.10.1.x86_64 grub2-branding-openSUSE-13.2-3.6.1.noarch grub2-x86_64-efi-2.02~beta2-20.10.1.x86_64 The old Grub is still installed rpm -qa | grep -i grub- grub-0.97-200.1.3.x86_64 For grub2, I created an /etc/default/grub and executed grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg Now I know I need to install grub2 as the bootloader to be used on boot, instead of old grub? Is the grub2-install command the right command? When I look at that command's usage grub2-install --help Usage: grub2-install [OPTION...] [OPTION] [INSTALL_DEVICE] it says INSTALL_DEVICE must be system device filename. Since I have '/boot' partition on a 4-disk RAID-1 array, what's the right way to install grub2 as the bootloader default on that array? [opensuse] VLC Leap - Problem or feature? Display detached from control panel

I am having an annoying issue with VLC but I do not know if this is a setting. I cannot find any solution. When playing VLC in leap I am getting a empty black windows with the controls of VLC and a detached Video window that has done its "declaration of independence" floating all alone. When I close the video, the sound goes on up to stopping the VLC main window with the controls. So I suppose this is not a feature but a bug? Or is there a setting to stop it? In Tumbleweed I do not get this. However in Tumbleweed I have to use nouveau, and this gives a flickering orgy with system freezes. In Leap I can use Nvidia driver (I run a Nvidia GX 210 card (with Nvidia G03 driver). Can this be the issue? Thanks in advance for hints. --- Alle Postfächer an einem Ort. My Rsnapshot setup often stops in the middle of remote backups. Rsnapshot is not important here. Rsnapshop wraps normal Rsync commands. $ rsnapshot daily Write failed: Broken pipe rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (3070981 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(235) [receiver=3.1.1] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (3065148 bytes received so far) [generator] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(235) [generator=3.1.1] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- rsnapshot encountered an error! The program was invoked with these options: /usr/bin/rsnapshot daily ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ERROR: /usr/bin/rsync returned 255 while processing root@remoteserver:/ WARNING: Rolling back "remoteserver/" So probably something triggers the connection closing on the remote side (here "remoteserver"). How can I get the Rsync debug messages on the remote side? "rsync --debug=ALL" only shows the debug messages on the local side. There are no Syslog messages about Rsync on "remoteserver". Local system is openSUSE 13.2. Remote system is Ubuntu 14.04. The connection is made by SSH.
