[opensuse] Tubleweed kernel - prior to Leap 42 release

Hello, Where can I find a suitable Tubleweed kernel (prior to the Leap 42 release) to try out in opensuse 13.2? I want a kernel compatible with xf86-video-intel-2.99.917-153.1.x86_64.rpm (Tumbleweed version from OS software search). I found: kernel-desktop-3.7.7-2.7.i686.rpm but when I go to the repository, it contains much older kernels: http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss/suse/i686 I suspect that is because the old Tumbleweed repo has been shifted. My current kernel is - 3.16.7-29-desktop I have read that my Intel Broadwell-U graphics chip may run better. I could not get the default (for 13.2) xf86-intel graphics driver to work with my card (always falls back to console output), so I downloaded the newer Tumbleweed version. With that I get a partial graphical desktop and then it crashes. Not sure this is the best approach, but I have read that kernels newer than 3.16 are required to get this chip to work properly. And once I get a suitable kernel, would I install it with # rpm -ivh , so as to have it as an additional grub entry - not to replace my existing kernel? I want to be able to boot my current kernel in case the new one fails. [opensuse] Cannot connect to smb share after last samba update

Hello, The error message: ../source3/smbd/trans2.c:3091(smbd_do_qfsinfo) smbd_do_qfsinfo: not an allowed info level (0x3ef) on IPC$ by smbd appears in the system log if I attempt to access a share with dolphin, and access is denied. The samba server is on oS 13.2, with samba recently updated. Before the update, everything was fine. I am happy if this was informative. As for what it matters, this is a very personal view. So whatever of this may be shared as such by the project, feel free to take over one to one and to perfectionate, of course. What I would do like to stress is not to drive away new users right away from leap, as fixes come through usage. So if everybody stays on 13.2 then this is (in my opinion) not bringing foward ones very own interest, as long as, at least, one does not departure on a preexisting desktop with preexisting data. So "from the scratch" I would rather point people to Leap. So there is no "oh God now I have to migrate, what shall I do" discussion in 18 month (if I recall the EOL rightly which are still "draft-status", aren't they?). So nice that you like it. P.s. The following does not want to be negative at all, but: to avoid you the risk of a "headwash". [opensuse] Remove dvgrab from openSUSE

Hi, I've just noticed a delete request for multimedia:apps dvgrab. The comment stated that it's dropped from Factory. I've been out in the wild for a few years and haven't been able to read list mail so I've no idea why it was dropped. I have been actively maintaining multimedia and a few other packages in that time and still receiving notification mail. I've noticed submit requests for dvgrab at times so there must be some interest. The deleter should have sent a list notification but I can't find one. [opensuse] make xfce, lxde, icewm, etc. use /usr/local/share/applications/*.desktop

KDE3, KDE4 & TDE use these files to populate their menus. What's necessary to get them into other menus? I've been Googling, but can't seem to connect the dots between /usr/local/share/applications/*.desktop and global menus, only for /home/*. I recently installed libfreeimage3 because someone wrote that it would make the googleearth panoramico images work. Well, it didn't and I think it was responsible for giving me this error every time I used Yast's xoftware management or refreshed the software repositories: Errors occurred while restoring the repository configuration. [opensuse] Cannot boot Leap 42.1 after fresh install

I've install openSUSE Leap 42.1 on my multiboot Dell Precision M4800. Leap is installed as follows: root - Btrfs on /dev/sda9, home - XFS on /dev/sda10 with all default options. Grub is installed on /dev/sda9. My current main system is Debian Jessie residing on /dev/sda6 (root) and / dev/sda7 (home). The first problem to overcome was that running update-grub in Jessie did not pick up openSuse at all. Only after I mounted /dev/sda9, were root of Leap resides, Jessie's update-grub found it. However, when I try to boot Leap, I am greeted with an infamous error:"File '/boot/vmlinuz-4.1.12-1-default' not found. You need to load kernel first." So get into grub> prompt. 'ls' shows all devices correctly. 'ls /' shows '@/' as expected. I can see all subvolumes on the partition, but here my luck ends. When I try to list files in @/boot or @/boot/grub2 my grub does not see any files. I tried to search for grub.cfg, vmlinuz, etc., Jessie's GRUB does not see any files on /dev/sda9 except its subvolumes and folders in them. Yes GRUB does sees all folders but doesn't see any files in them I've browsed /dev/sda9 when mounted in Jessie and everything seems to be in perfect order, all expected files are in their respected directories. Anyone else ever have this critter? Ours arrived today and did make the network iffy. I am not certain how it got installed. Popular wisdom is that it is via a ssh root login. I cannot think I have ever used a password with ssh. And I only ssh in as a user and then su to root. Hi, I just got a malware email (5 KB). It claims to be a FAX document, but of course it is not. It is zipped, thus not every tool would see it. When expanded, it contains a file with .doc.js extension. [opensuse] Why (as the only one) can not openSUSE work with large USB drive?

I have recently bought 5 TB Seagate Expansion desktop hard drive http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/expansion-fam/expansion-… Basically, it is just ordinary 3.5“ HDD connected to the computer via USB 3. openSUSE 13.2 and Leap 42.1 (tested on several computers and DEs). fdisk, gdisk, parted, YaST partition module do not see it. dmesg reports some errors about uas module. I added uas to /etc/modprobe.d/50- blacklist.conf to blacklist it and I regenerated mkinitrd, but it doesn't prevent the module from load and it doesn't work. When I unplug the drive, system crashes. I tried LIVE CDs of Ubuntu, Fedora a openSUSE 13.1 promo DVD and they worked fine. As I saw working live CDs, sometimes uas module is loaded, sometimes not, so that I'm not sure if this really is the case... I reported bug https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=954138 about that, but I'd appreciate at least some workaround to quickly fix it before there is some real solution. +1 to driving a stake through avahi's heart. For quite some time my main computer is a mini-ITX I5 (1156). To get wifi (my router is across house from here) I use the ASUS N13 usb which had a maddening habit of needing to be kicked with a "systemctl restart network.service" at seemingly random intervals. The behavior was quite irritating, to say the least but I didn't see anything obvious and chalked it up to hardware incompatability UNTIL 1) I read the thread on avahi daemon and 2) while looking for something else I found pointers to avahi working with the device in the usb port used by the NIC. Needless to say, I had an "AHA! moment" and killed avahi. So far there hasn't been a hiccup from the NIC. Thanks to whomever started and contributed to that thread. Only time will tell but I am hopeful that my problem is solved because of it. In case you are using Tumbleweed, then it might be a good idea AFAIU to post to the factory list (for the time being). It would also be good, provided the message comes still up, to list here which updates exactly are mentioned by the app. Besides: zypper up should give you both, updates and patches. [opensuse] Plasmoid veromix

I use veromix to switch the audio between my hdmi tv and my computer. I also use it to control the volume level of individual applications. However, since upgrading to opensuse leap 42.1 I cannot load or access it. I don't seem to be able to install or utilise any plasmoids other than the default ones. Does anyone know of a fix for this or is there an alternative program that can easily manage volume control over individual apps. [opensuse] First experience with Leap 42 on Lenovo G 505

Hi all, Finally I gave a try to Leap this weekend. Installation with KDE (replacing 13.2) went flawlessly, but the result is not pure joy. The graphics is, well... de gustibus non est disputandum. I began to use this laptop with 13.1 and finally, suspend now works with 42. As a matter of fact, it worked also with 13.2, but the system could not come out of coma. So it is awakening, but kills the usb2 port, which I use for the mouse. Plugging the device into usb3 it works again. I spent most time with making LibreOffice5 to work and I did not succeed fully. Writer, Calc and Math now seems to work, but Impress and Draw still crashes and lead to reboot automatically. Hoped this is a KDE bug, but the same happened on Xfce. And as always, kdewallet tries to drive me crazy. Did you meet with any of the problems, especially with the suspend libre fault? Hi, I got an alert that there were new updates pending installation, then I click 'install updates', and it proceeded downloading updates. However, every 20 minutes are so, I get error from the update applet that it failed to acquire authorization, but I didn't get any pop up dialog requesting such authorization? How can I fix this? In mean time, I've already ran "zypper up", interesting I didn't see any of the listed patches being installed, do I need to run a separate command IE. 'zypper patch'? [opensuse] kvm and virtualbox

Hi all, It is all my fault, I was not careful enough. I wanted to check KVM against Virtualbox, cause I read it is better, faster, etc. So I imported my vbox guests into it. Now I think I would stay with vbox, because it works better on this hardware. The only thing is that I cannot boot the guests anymore. How can I get back them, How to unload, unmount, release, or any other method, to free it from kvm. I tried a few things following and adopting the hints found for ubuntu, but none of them worked. [opensuse] Can't hibernate (Leap, xfce)

Hi, After clicking on Hibernate on desktop (xfce), I get the screensaver, but it does not hibernate. So I enter my password, and back to the desktop I see two popup messages. One says: Authentication is required for hibernating the system while other users are logged in. And it wants my root password. Another popup says Failed to run action "hibernate", Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: bla bla bla. Log shows: Nov 9 03:11:35 Minas-Anor polkitd[843]: Operator of unix-session:17 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate-multiple-sessions for system-bus-name::1.407 [xfce4-session] (owned by unix-user:cer) This was reported as bug years ago, I think by me. Still unsolved, I see. On 13.1 I bypass the issue by typing, as root, "pm-hibernate". But Leap doesn't use pm-utils. What should I use to hibernate, then? -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] No sound (leap, xfce)

Hi, While I set up sound in YaST, I have sound. I get sound from VLC that is playing. But when yast finishes configuring sound, then sounds stops, nothing can be heard. In fact, the volume applet has a [X] symbol, and right click pops up a message that says: gstreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem Yet, as I say, as soon as I tell yast to configure sound, it plays fine. When it exits, sounds stops. Hardware is 82801 (ICH9 Family) HD Audio controller. It works find in oS 13.1 -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. [opensuse] What is the new halt entry in the grub2 menu after upgrade to suse leap?

I think the second reboot after my leap update of my 13.2 suse boxes, gave me an additional halt entry at the very bottom of the grub2 menu. I have never tried this halt entry, but why is it there or what is it exactly? I think it maybe got put there when I removed the old linux kernel 3.x that was still a left over after the leap 42.1 linux kernel 4.1 package came in with the leap update. So I thought I could rpm -e the surplus linux kernel that stayed there from the suse 13.2 days. Anyone? At first I couldn't believe it: If I upgrade my distribution from 13.2 to Leap 42.1, PHP is downgraded from 5.6.1 to 5.5.14 and Perl is downgraded from 5.20.1 to 5.18.2. Hi, Say I hibernate Leap (it is a multiboot machine). Say on restore I boot 13.1, which as it shares the same swap, would see there is an hibernated image in swap and try it. But... would it be restored properly, or would something terrible happen? Obviously, I don't want to try it on real hardware. Perhaps on a virtual one. Boot with LVM root often fails on oS 13.2, and dracut starts the emergency shell. The messages beforehand are (copied with errors): timeout /sbin/multipath -i -u sda1 [slow multipath etc] dracut -initqueue PARTIAL MODE Incomplete logical volumes will be processed [another error message about a missing LVM partition] This issue looks similar to the one described in this[1] Ubuntu bug report. Dead. (I don't think I have seen test software for DVD units? :-? ) I have unplugged the SATA cable from the computer to this DVD unit. Let's see if this way it does not crash. And I was not using the unit. It just had a forgotten disk I had read a week or two ago. So... now I have to get a new unit. It will not be an LG again, bad hardware. I have seen a Liteon or a Samsung for about 16€. Wow, these things are cheap now. Cheap as dirt, and reliable as dirt, I guess. Sigh. Is it worth it to get a unit capable of Blu Ray? When I start Thunderbird, the sequence goes like this (from recent memory): a) it pops up several message boxes, asking for the password of each mail account. Instead of waiting for the master password before starting connecting to the accounts. Often, once the master password is entered, the sessions with the ISP have timed out, and the connections fail; then Thunderbird asks if it should retry. Another bunch of dialogs to close. This has been hapening for years. b) it asks for the master password - but in several message boxes. It is expected to prompt for that password - but once! Since a few months back, it asks several times. Before it asked just once. So my procedure is to enter the master password, once, then close all other password requests, for the accounts and the master. It is a nuisance. But the master password prompt does not respond to the ESC key. I have to click on cancel, or tab-enter. Two keys. [opensuse] How to upgrade kernel version

I have noticed on the lists mention of kernels at least as high as 4.2.0. I have been performing upgrades and my kernel is at 3.16.7-29. I have an odd graphics processor on a Nvidia laptop and it was suggested back in April on the Nouveau-Nvidia list that I should try version 4 of the kernel. I have been waiting but it has not arrived. Is there a reason open-SUSE is still using version 3 series kernels, or reason I should not upgrade? And is there document describing the procedure to obtain a newer kernel. Hello Some question for who might be very practical with intelligen pinyin, m17n and intelligent m17n a) Is there a way or a code or shortcut to indicate the intelligent pinyin to give me at once the available roots instead of all the other possibilities? e.g. 彳chì as root nr 60 comes way late (in my case 3 full lists of simbols with intelligent pinyin. Any possibility to limit this to roots? b) Since the reinstall of my system (13.2 kde) the "Chinese hanyu pinyin (m17n) " comes without icon. Before it had one. Should I file that as bug or is it known? c) Sometimes in Libreoffice, while I am typing with intelligent pinyin ibus "hangs". When I restart the ibus app by the menue point "restart", this will have no function in Libreoffice, you will continue to type in latin alphabet. All the rest is flawless. Is there a setting to influence this, a bug or is this a feature for typing pinyin in other languages then mandarin?. As this is a very common occurrence (let be that there are 3 "de" therefore typing a text in pinyin you have the problem nearly every second sentence) it makes for me that variant little usable. But maybe I am doing something wrong? Behavior was: pinyin when without accent simply to write the latinization as such. [opensuse] "secrets for <connection name>" window appears after login

Hello: This is in openSUSE 13.1 and its default KDE4 session (Platform Version 4.11.5). I use network manager to connect to DSL network. The connection secrets are set to be stored in file (unencrypted). The connection is set to connect automatically. After logging in to KDE4 session a KDE4 daemon window appears, titled "secrets for <connection name>". The network login name and password fields are filled. I have to click OK to enable the connection. How can I disable this window and have network manager connect without any user intervention (clicking OK)? [opensuse] corrupt journals (13.2)

Howdy. While going to the logs to investigate a problem, I find they are corrupt. "journalctl --list-boots" shows only some ancient boots ending in December 2014, 21 in total, while there are actually more: journalctl --list-boots | wc -l 21 journalctl -F _BOOT_ID | wc -l 316 "journalctl --verify" shows a bunch of problems so I thought I would just clear the journals up to the last month or so, but the expected "--vacuum-time=" option apparently doesn't work in openSuSe 13.2. Is there another preferred way to clear the corrupt part of the logs? Thanks. IIRC, wasn't openSUSE 13.1 a long term release (or whatever it was called)? Which means that support would last for a bit longer. I guess that is mainly in reference to security and bug updates for the 13.1 release itself. But I am curious why things like LibreOffice (5.0) and MinWG no longer provide for 13.1. OBS will still build for these. But they are actively disabled. I guess it is really up to the various maintainers to decide what they want to do. All, This is strange. I'm not sure what update broke it, but something broke cups. Chasing the problem down, it seems that now the following packages are required: cups-filters cups-filters-ghostscript libqpdf13 Of those 3, I think the cups-filters is the only mandatory package. Until several weeks ago (give or take - you know....) whenever I started Marble Virtual Globe it would automatically acquire the latest satellite imagery which, of course, would show, for example, where any hurricanes/typhoons/cyclones were. However, this updating suddenly stopped and now, even after the typhoon which lashed Japan/Taiwan/China weeks ago is still sitting some 170km south east of Japan, and there is no sign of the hurricane (whatever) now lashing the coast of Yemen. Anybody else having the same problem with Marble Virtual Globe? Or know how to fix this hassle?
