[opensuse] offtopic: laptop repair

Alright, after a decade or more of routinely carrying a laptop around I just broke my first screen. It's for a Dell XPS L502X. Looks like I can spend anywhere from $60 to $300 to replace it. (At $300 it may be smarter to replace it?) It looks like the 2 basic options are buying a complete lid with the screen and bezel already toghether, or I can buy just a screen. I'm reasonably handy with tools, so I'm wondering what the smart thing is for me to do. Any advice? On my own, I will likely order this one from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2721DJ3574&cm_re=dell_x… Any gotcha's I should be aware of? [opensuse] Installing Java

I've tried installing Oracle Java from both rpm and tar, but for some reason, it does not appear to install properly. To enable Java in a browser, I'm supposed to create a symlink from either libjavaplugin_oji or libjavaplugin_oji.so to the .mozilla/plugin directory. However, after installing by either method, those files do not appear anywhere on my system. Even the directory those files are supposed to be in don't appear. [opensuse] disk cache

A year or so ago I started a discussion about a problem I had with the disk cache getting full, and then there being long delays when it was emptied. The solution at that time (openSUSE 12.1) was to periodically run: echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches At the time, this solved everything. For some reason I cannot understand, I think this problem has returned. The cache seems to be filling up - but the command above does not help. I looked through the archives but could not find the message from the person who suggested an X app that monitored the various cache. I found this tool very useful at the time. But I have since forgotten it. I usually record this kind of information, but not that time. [opensuse] MediaWiki exploit - check your site...

All, I was hit by a mediawiki exploit that past week that affected versions at least up to and including 122.2. I am still working to determine the exact exploit used or whether this may be a new one. From what I can gather, either by cross-site-scripting (XSS) or cross-site request forgery (CSRF) an exploit existed that allowed an attacker to bypass the normal page/user creation protections, captcha and response e-mail to generate an account and gain privileges to use wiki mail for outbound spam. The postfix smtp sender/client restrictions were defeated by sending outbound as a valid system user using the UID of the web-user (e.g. http, www, etc.). This attack is automated and will generate thousands of users/pages and outbound mails in a relatively short amount of time. Since the inbound connection is via http (instead of say a login attempt via ssh), the normal anvil/fail2ban restrictions are not implicated. After reviewing the listed CVE's at: http://www.cvedetails.com/product/4125/Mediawiki-Mediawiki.html?vendor_id=2… I'm not sure this exploit is among those listed. Mediawiki seems to be the only web-application affected by this exploit. So, if you run mediawiki, update to the latest 1.23.3 and check your logs often. If you are hit and need to get rid of 10,000 additions to your server, drop a reply. Direct deletion/truncation from the mysql tables themselves are easiest way to recover. -- David C.
