[opensuse] 13.1 - MariaDB: Why is /etc/my.cnf chmod 0640 and why is /etc/my.cnf.d/ 0750?

All, After trying to determine why mysql (MariaDB) /etc/my.cnf settings are only seen in mysql is run by linux root user, I've stumbled on to a permission problem with Andrey's help that makes NO sense at all. The problem with normal unix users not getting the system-wide setting in /etc/my.cnf is because /etc/my.cnf cannot be read by normal users. That's nuts. In fact, the whole system-wide conf scheme for mysql can only be read by 'root' or members of the 'mysql' group. Specifically: # l /etc/my.cnf -rw-r----- 1 root mysql 3429 Jul 25 19:37 my.cnf # l /etc/my.cnf.d total 20 -rw-r----- 1 root mysql 119 Sep 19 2013 default_plugins.cnf Why should users have to be members of the mysql group to see settings in the config files?? This is completely Linux backwards from eliminating the need for users to be members of special groups to use the system. What says the brain-trust? Intentional or bug? -- David C. [opensuse] why is rsync speed (kB/s) 2x as dolphin copy?

Hi, I am just wondering if I have some weird settings or if that's normal behaviour: When I copy a file on my server, using drag and drop with two dolphin windows I get a transfer speed of approx. 35-40 kB/s. When I use rsync to copy the same files I get a speed of approx. 85-90 kB/s. Where does this difference come from? [opensuse] mariadb (mysql) /etc/my.cnf [mysql] settings are not seen by users??

All, I need help with /etc/my.cnf on opensuse 13.1. When I initialize a new install of MariaDB, I always change the prompt. For some reason, I just can't stand the default big MariaDB ((table)) > prompt that is the default. So the solution has always been to provide a prompt in /etc/my.cnf to provide a system-wide font. This is done in the [mysql] section of my.cnf. For some reason, the 13.1 my.cnf does not provide a [mysql] section (I guess there are no defaults opensuse makes use of). So when I initialized mysql I added the following: [mysql] no-auto-rehash prompt=\R:\m\_mysql(\d)>\_ That just disables automatic table name completion and sets a smaller prompt with the time to the left. E.g.: 19:14 mysql((none))> The problem is the only user who has the new prompt applied by default is root. If root launches mysql, bingo I get my prompt, but if a user starts mysql, I get: MariaDB [(none)]> Huh? Why isn't the my.cnf setting being applied system wide. Yes, I have a ~/.my.cnf, but the system wide default has always been applied since it is not overridden in my ~/.my.cnf. But for some reason in 13.1 that is not true. The only way I can get my prompt when run under my user is to manually add the prompt to ~/.my.cnf. That is not supposed to work that way. What in 13.1 prevents the system-wide prompt from being applied for any user other than root? Is there some build flag or other config that prevents the system-wide [mysql] section of /etc/my.cnf from being applied when mysql is started by normal users? -- David C. [opensuse] Who does graphics rendering with ssh?

Hi. I'm probing ssh with X forwarding. Server is a phenom II x6 and client is a netbook. If I start a ssh connection from the netbook and try to play a 1080p video, playback is sluggish. CPU usage raises up to about 50% and MPlayer shows the typical "Your system is too SLOW to play this!". If I run Google Earth it complains about the graphic. This lead me think that it is netbook's hardware who is doing the graphic stuff. Am I right? I did suppose that all the processing was done in the server? Hello: I would like to save and/or print google forum topic pages for future reference and offline use. For example this page: https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/gmail/Ajayw8WrwRQ If I save it in my browser using save page as in firefox or save as in opera, the resulted saved html file does not contain the page's content. I can not view the content offline. If I try to print the page to pdf file in firefox, only one page gets into the file and the comments from the lower part of the page are cut off. How could I save and or print the page so that I could view the content offline? [opensuse] 13.1 - systemd-lite? How to know what to start/enable via systemclt v. init-scripts

All, What are the rules for 13.1 concerning what should be enabled through systemctl and what should be launched via init-script and set through chkconfig? I understand 13.1 uses sysv compatibility and retains consolekit, and init-scripts, but that is a bit confusing considering there may be service files and init-scripts for some packages. My prior systemd experience has been with my Archlinux installs. Arch moved to a pure-systemd setup over a year ago. 13.1 is my first install that implements systemd in somewhat of a compatibility mode. Now I find myself wondering: "What's the rule for 13.1?" When I configure mariaDB, do I use the service file or the init-script? What about for spamd, or hddtemp? [opensuse] Gnome environment failure on IBM X40 laptop

Fresh install of 13.1. Gnome environment seems only partially funtional. Any attmempt to investigate environment causes system to crash. The environmetn has obvious application menus or context menus. The 'Activities' icon does nothing. Settings and time/network panels seem to work. But unable to explore far in any direction after two attempts without the system crashing and throwing me back to the login screen after displaying the following error: """ Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occured and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again. <log out> """ I have to get this machine working with some degree of urgency. I intend to reinstall with KDE. But I can run tests if this can be of any help. Please send instructions quickly if desired. Hello Two problems related to security and internationalisation have arisen while attempting to install opensuse: one major, one merely obstructive. Both problems occur when setting the encryption password. 1. The major problem concerns the keyboard layout. The opensuse installer very helpfully asks which international keyboard layout it should use during install. It does this before asking for the user to set their passphrases. So the user gets to formulate their password in their chosen international keyboard layout - most likely the keyboard layout they are actually using: e.g. UK keyboard layout. But when install is complete, in my instance at least, the computer goes to a command screen and says, before prompting for the just given password to open the encrypted disk: "Note: only US keyboard layout is supported". The result is a failed install unless you happen to be in the US. Perhaps the problem has not occured in other countries where language differences have focused more attention on internationlisation? It is nigh on impossible to enter your encryption password using a US layout on a UK keyboard unless you use a password drawn from a limited and therefore less secure set of characters; and only then if you happen to know what characters are actually valid in both keyboard layouts, and where they are. I had a quick look. I'm not even sure it's actually possible to map characters chosen from a UK keyboard layout into a US keymap and then back onto a UK keyboard layout again without losing some. At least not for a regular person who is simply trying to put their password in at the prompt. Maybe not for anyone but Lou Gerstner himself. if this problem cannot be corrected, it would at least save the people time and frustration to tell them which characters are valid or not when they create their password, and to remove the offer of a non-US keyboard during install. I'm sure people would be happy not to choose invalid characters if they were told what they were. 2. The other problem is that the password itself recognises limited punctuation characters in whatever character set. Characters it does not recognise are recognised routinely by other password prompts. Some other password prompts fail to recognise characters that the opensuse password prompt does. Some password prompts have no limitations for a given standard keyboard layout. The result is that it becomes difficult to create a password system - i.e. a method for choosing complex passwords for different situations that can be remembered - because your system falls down as soon as you come across a password screen that disallows certain characters your system relies on. This actually happens pretty regularly. And the rules about what is a valid character or not seem always to be different. That doesn't make it right.
