I spent some time looking at this during the last two evenings and haven't found a way to add /dev/sr0 to the list of devices. In Settings - k3b> Devices, only device /dev/sr1 is present. There is a sentence present in the header that says "K3b tries to detect all your devices properly. If K3b is unable to detect your drive, you need to modify their permissions to give K3b write access to all devices." Hi Mark, You were very specific about your software versions and you at least listed the troubleshooting steps you've taken ... which is extremely helpful ... but you were not very informative with respect to: 1. the type of media that is failing (make/brand & type of disc) The type of media that are not recognized by k3b in opensuse 12.3 are Verbatim DVD+R and Memorex CD-R. They are now recognized in /dev/sr1 but not in /dev/sr0. 2. the affected drive make, model & firmware version There are two of these installed internally in my computer. They are LG DVD Burner 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 22X DVD-R 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model GH22NS50 - OEM They are listed in Yast>Hardware>Block Devices as DVDRAM GH22NS50 (/dev/sr0) and DVDRAM GH22NS50 (/dev/sr1). The operating system (opensuse 12.3) sees them, but not k3b for an unknown reason. If you figure out why, you will solve the problem. To view the burner go to this url: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136167 I have never installed firmware in either Windows7 or in Linux (both PCLinuxOS or openSUSE) for these DVD Burners, because they have worked immediately upon installation in all previous operating systems. Specifically for opensuse, this has been 11.4, 12.1, and 12.2. The problem has only presented itself with 12.3. Recognizing media is usually an internal function of the drive. k3b and Brassero merely convey (report) such failures. Please clarify what you mean by "it" :-) There's a lot of context switching happening in your writing here. What I meant was that k3b only recognizes one drive. It recognizes /dev/sr1 but not /dev/sr0. Assuming "It" here means k3b, you seem to be saying that the attached external drive works fine with the otherwise unrecognized discs (media) while those same discs are not being recognized by the internal drive. (Again, this seems to be describing an 'unrecognized media' problem. Maybe the internal drive isn't /designed/ to work with that media type? Or, they /may/ work, depending on the brand, but they're not 'officially' supported by the drive manufacturer.) I wrote in an earlier post that I have no external drive to attach to the computer for trouble shooting. I guess that you didn't see that post, but no matter. I can clear that up for you now. There is no external drive, I have two internal DVD Burners. I don't believe that it is a problem with the burner hardware, as it has worked in all my previous opensuse versions. Also, I made the point that it still works at the present time with Win7 and with PCLinuxOS, both of which are installed on this same computer. This should help you to eliminate questions about it being faulty media or hardware. So, is it the case under Linux that the internal drive does _not_ recognize the media, but that the same media works fine, in the same drive, under Win7 and PCLinuxOS? Yes, that is the point that I am trying to make, exactly. FWIW, I have had the experience of needing to update a CD/DVD-RW drive's firmware (using an OEM supplied Windows installer) before the device would work reliably under Linux. Regards, Carl I now have two identical DVD Burners internally mounted for which I have never installed firmware in Win7 or linux. But they both now work in win7, pclinuxos, and have worked in previous versions of opensuse. Now, one is recognized and works to burn discs, while the other doesn't using either k3b or brassero in opensuse 12.3. [opensuse] -rpath and ldconfig

I have an application that runs on a diskless openSUSE. It gets rebooted often. The application uses libraries that are in a directory that is mounted via NFS. The mount works and all libs are present. The application is linked with -rpath /opt/rsoft/lib to tell where to look for DSOs. For some reason, some of the libraries in /opt/rsoft/lib will not be found until ldconfig is run. Why? I have checked that the binary contains the directory: $ objdump -x checkstream |grep RPATH RPATH /opt/rsoft/lib The library that is not found is referenced by another library that is linked to the app. These are libraries from intel (intel Performance Primitives), so I do not control how they themselves are built. Could it be that RPATH applies to the binary and the libraries it has references to, but does not apply to libraries loaded by these libraries? Or have I missed something? This is on openSUSE 11.2. CD or DVD? and are you trying to burn an openSUSE LIVE CD - say the latest versions - because if you are trying to do this and are using a CD rather than a DVD then k3b is smart enough to "tell" you to insert the correct disc because the LIVE CD is too big for a CD. I cannot remember _EVER_ solving any problem by putting a modeline in any Xorg config file (unlike for XFree86), though I do remember multiple attempts to do so. The above modeline is the same as what I get. I'll try creating these files with the minimum info and see if I have any luck. Will be at least a few days before I can ascertain anything though. I'm a bit reluctant to dredge up my long history of problems especially since I'm hijacking somebody else's thread here. But in brief: my laptop's Mobility Radeon 9700 card doesn't play well with the radeon drivers ever since version 11.something of openSUSE around the time KMS was introduced. It's not a problem with the individual card since I had exactly the same issues with a desktop machine and a Radeon 9600 card (which the 9700 is based on). I've tried fresh installs but always the same thing happens. Everything runs fine for the first few days, then the system locks up, the screen flashes blank for a moment and comes back but everything's frozen. Only a magic keys reboot can get me out. Once this cycle commences it becomes more frequent, like there's some memory corruption because on reboots it often happens again very soon. I've tried all kinds of things with x.org files, KDE/compositing settings, nomodeset, etc. I've posted on forums, contributed to various bug reports and recently started another on Bugzilla (unanswered, see here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=817528), but I'm hitting a brick wall for about 3 or 4 years now. The laptop otherwise works fine but the only workaround is to disable 3D via the xorg 50-device file, causing the machine to run on software drivers with higher fan speed and noise and slowdowns that sometimes render it almost unusable. That's already more than brief. Hi, I spent some time last evening working on trying to get k3b to recognize a disc in the disc drive without success. I also tried to use Brassero to burn the disc, but it also has the same problem. Neither program recognizes that there is a disc in the drive. The disc is recognized by kde. I am using openSuse 12.3 with kde 4.10.2 release 1. The k3b version is 2.0.2-15.44-x86_64. The repository where the k3b version comes from is http://packman.links2linux.de, however I recently changed the packman repository to http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_12.3 But I don't think the change of repository has anything to do with the problem. I followed through this bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=812462 and found that my /etc/pam.d/common-session and /etc/pam.d/common-session-pc files seem to be configured correctly. I also followed through this thread http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/multimedia/44251… but didn't find anything useful to resolve the problem. [opensuse] ssh, cd, watch X die

Ok, here's a "special" one. Brand new 12.3 install. In all other respects, quite happy. Now, this does NOT happen on all remote hosts, but just one. 1) ssh dmz host 2) ssh internal host 3) type cd /somewhere - hit enter 4) my local X session crashes. This is remarkably consistent with the above sequence. Any ideas what to look for? How to debug? Thanks. [opensuse] Radeon driver

Hi, I while ago I installed OS12.3 on two identical laptops. Since I had probems with the "standard" driver (radeon), I had to install the fglrx-driver. This works OK for "regular" work, but some video-intensive programs (blender, kaffeine) don't work, so I just tried to install radeon again. I followed "http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Radeon#Supported_hardware" to do that, but I don't get a graphical screen. The last I see on <crtl><alt><F7> is : [ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface. I do have som Xorg.0.logs, but I don't see anything special, except from Xorg -configure : [ 552.311] Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. From startx : [ 813.934] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. [ 813.934] Fatal server error: [ 813.934] no screens found [ 813.934] (EE) Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help. [ 813.934] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. [ 813.934] (EE) [ 813.939] Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file. What can I do ? If anyone wants to see the full logs, where could I upoad them ? Or just post them here ? [opensuse] low cost PC with a RS-232 port? Possibly an ARM?

All, I built a webserver for a rs-232 connected weatherstation from 1998 era laptop. (256 MB ram, low power CPU) I only used the screen / keyboard early on to configure things. Also the laptop never moves so there is no advantage to it being a laptop. The laptop has died so I want to replace it. I'd like the replacement to be relatively small so it can fit under a bed, etc. I've got a keyboard / mouse / monitor I can hook up for the initial build, but I would hope after that all support would be via ssh. I'd like the PC to have a rs-232 connection just because I've read the weatherstation doesn't work well with usb-to-rs232 adapters. Recommendations?
