[opensuse] Installing Adobe Flash on openSUSE 12.2

Hello, I just installed openSUSE, and because I am new to linux in general, I would like some help installing Adobe Flash. When I tried to copy the file to Firefox's addons folder, dolphin told me that access was denied. Help! [opensuse] Configuring service runlevels

Given that the YaST Runlevel editor is broken (Bug 800514) in openSuSE12.3, and it appears that the switch-over to systemd is still a work in progress, my question is this - Is the only workaround, to automatically starting up services during boot up, is to go in and manually create the links in the /etc/init.d/rc*.d directories for the various services one needs? That is going to be a real PITA trying to figure out by hand the order in which all our services must be started and stopped. Anyone have another better workaround solution? BTW - This is the second major bug I have now encountered in trying to install and use openSuSE12.3. (The first was, and appears it may still be, Bug 809843 which was a showstopper for me.) Can't say I am very impressed with this release, and am thinking about dropping back to 12.2 (or perhaps even earlier) for our servers and gateway systems and wait until 13.x comes out.... [opensuse] KDE desktop crashes after long period of time (>24 hrs)

Hi I am using my openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 box with KDE to run some long simulations. The program is started in a terminal window and it runs smoothly, but I have noticed that after long period of time the KDE desktop crashes, however the terminal window is still in place and my simulation is unaffected. Also, KDE desktop seems to be able to restart, but the functionality is no longer the same, so the only way is to reboot the PC. [opensuse] 12.3 + ntfs + ext4 + USB3 + different copying speeds

I bought a Seagate 2TB USB3 external HDD today and formatted 75% of it with ext4 file system and 25% with ntfs - using latest version of Gparted. My two internal 1TB Seagates are SATA 3 and formatted with ext4 except for one partition (ntfs) which has XP installed, but which is rarely used (it's mainly there to bring me back to earth and to remind me how bloody aweful Windows is). I use mc (Midnight Commander) 99.99% of the time to manage my files. After I formatted the external HDD (as described above) I went to copy files from my main system to the new external HDD - which is to be used for backups. What I found - and which is what I am now asking about - is that when, using mc, that when copying files to the *ext4* formatted partition the files where being copied across at ~80MB/s. The files copied over were a mixture of ntfs and ext4 files (which I had copied from a collapsing 32-bit system to my current *Linux* system last year when I replaced the old computer). However, when I went to copy files to the *ntfs* formatted part of the new external HDD, the best transfer rate I got was ~28MB/s - which looks very much like what I used to get when using USB2! So, why the *big* difference in transfer rates between copying files to a partition formatted in *ext4* and one formatted in *ntfs*?! What system am a I using? Look at my signature line; but I understand that some brain-dead mail clients drop the signature line so for these people with brain-dead mailers the sig. line is: Using openSUSE 12.3 x86_64 with KDE 4.10.1 & kernel 3.8.4-1 Any suggestions, please, as to why there is such a difference in the transfer rates between the 2 file systems, and how can this be overcome? 12.3 client connected to AD Hi I have sssd up and running against a Samba4 AD. It works fine. The only quirk is that getent passwd and getent group return only local users getent passwd lynn2 and getent group Domain\ Users work fine however getent passwd lynn2 lynn2:*:3000033:20513:lynn2:/home/users/lynn2:/bin/bash getent group 'Domain Users' Domain Users:*:20513: If I set enumerate = true in sssd.conf Then, getent passwd and getent group return as expected: both local and domain objects. But only the first time that the commnds are run. I believe that the enumerate line should allow me list all domain users too. [opensuse] Clone monitors on two separate cards

Hello Guys, I have a ThinkPenguine notebook running on OpenSuSe 12.3. and last week I have bought Plugable USB docking station (runs with DysplayLink chipset). The aim of this purchase was getting this behavior: 1. Running two cloned screens when connected to USB docking station 2. Running primary screen on the external monitor and extended screen on the notebook, when connected to USB docking station. Basically both options would be fine. After making the adjustments to X server suggested here http://plugable.com/2011/12/23/usb-graphics-and-linuxI got the external monitor working more ore less OK. Never the less my laptop screen was not functional. [opensuse] 12.3 installation, runlevels and trouble shooting

OK gang, I get it new and shiny is kool. This, however, is ridiculous. Booting from install media puts my Dell XPS 1730 (aka Dell MXG071) w/Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT into display test mode (pretty colors on the LCD but not very compute useful), unless I use failsafe mode... And after install all I have is x11failsafe and a VERY slow system. Systemd doesn't seem to allow me to switch to what used to be runlevel 3 (does such a thing still exist in a port systemd world?) to even begin to troubleshoot. Open a bug? Sure, where to start? What exactly is broken? You tell me, where do I start. BTW, I am NOT a windows/OS X refugee. [opensuse] firewall/iptables suggestion for preventing brute-force SIP attempts?

Our asterisk server is seeing numerous brute force attempts to get access to a SIP account. I call it messed up output... you say half dozen, I say 6? ;-) It tries to load a frame buffer on my crap, on-board, video card which, with VGA compatibility, doesn't do so well and can, at best do 1280x1024 in 32 bit (on a 16:9 display that came with it! ;-)); To run in 1920x1080 it needs to drop down to 16bit color). It wasn't meant to do graphics. It's outfitted to be run as a server. Same CPU does go in my desktop but there it has graphics (but not much disk space). Only in 12.3 and later have I gotten the half screen -- but that's partly because my card now has a kernel adapter that matches it -- I don't know what mode the half-screen is...maybe it's trying 1920x1080 in 32 bit to match the monitor? Just a guess.. I try not to boot in a graphics or framebuffer mode, usually. It eats memory for a console that isn't going to be used very often. That's what you get when I boot from initrd or if I let it set my console font: a frame buffer that runs slowly with no HW acceleration. Vs. Running in VGA text mode, and it uses HW scrolling @ about 10X the speed (not that either is readable in any detail, but the frame buffer scroll creates a motion blur as a it scrolls up on my screen, whereas the HW scroll does not , though it goes by too fast for anything other than catching anomalies or errors. It doesn't have to switch mode so the graphics monitor never loses sync -- so no missed output during a mode switch. Scrolling is offloaded to the video controller.
