[opensuse] Grub security doubt

Hi, I have erncrypted the password for increased security, executed the command 'grub-md5-crypt' in a shell (as root). One will be asked for the password. After the password is entered, it will be displayed in encrypted form: linux:~ # grub-md5-crypt Password: Retype password: $1$xmY1P/$wL6rbH2VC2L5IT8GivtytyeLq. I appended this string ('$1$xmY1P/$wL6rbH2VC2L5IT8GivtytyeLq') to the global section of the file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'. The option that needs to be appended is 'password --md5'. The section looked as follows: ********** # Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Tue Jan 17 18:55:10 IST 2012 # THIS FILE WILL BE PARTIALLY OVERWRITTEN by perl-Bootloader # Configure custom boot parameters for updated kernels in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader default 0 #timeout 8 password --md5 $1$xmY1P/$wL6rbH2VC2L5IT8GivtytyeLq. ##YaST - generic_mbr gfxmenu (hd0,0)/boot/message ##YaST - activate ........................ ........................ ********** So now, when I boot into the PC, I have to press 'p' and enter the password and this is what which is expected. But when logging in _when_ I don't press 'p' (to enter the password and boot) but only long press Enter, I get booted, so why the above option (of appending the grub-md5 password to the global section of '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file) is not working in this particular case? Since implementing the above should block both - the normal logging (until password is entered) and interactive editing too. If you are going to use rsynce consider that you may want to use some additional options to make the copy more faithful to the original... rsync -a -H -A -X -S /from/ /to/ See the man page. Before going to 12.1 I used rsync to duplicate / to a spare partition (I always leave make two OS partitions on every drive - can't have too many now that disk is cheap). I then manually edited /etc/fstab /boot/grub/menu.1st to make sure it would boot, that way I could boot the upgraded 12.1 or the old 11.4. Note this was in addition to offline backups (also using rsync). If you brought a machine down to runlevel 1 it would be reasonably safe to just rsync the live machine. [opensuse] anner doesn't offer root password to be entered

I finally got the Chrome installed but when I try to update using it it gives a warning message to the effect that it could not proced without the password and ends. On Ubuntu or RHEL I get something around 1e-5 as expected. Is this a bug in the glibc shipped with Opensuse 12.1? [opensuse] pam_mount not un-mounting (opensuse 11.4)

Hello, I have setup pam_mount on several servers and pam_mount has worked flawlessly on all of them, however I am noticing that an identical setup on an 11.4 server is not unmounting users' cifs mounts when exiting their ssh sessions. [opensuse] yast2 tv module?

I have acquired a dual-channel DVB-S receiver card, so this weekend I was playing with setting it up, MythTV, VDR etc. I got it working with mplayer in the end, but on the way I did try out the YAST2 module for TV card config - didn't seem to make much of a difference, so I was wondering what the status of it is? I am getting ready to do a zypper dup to 12.1 from 11.4 on my main desktop system. I would like to clone my current / drive to a back up disk (attached via USB). I have used pmagic for this in the past. Is it possible to do this from within the openSUSE 11.4 KDE environment?
