[opensuse] Suse 12.2 battles and victories

OK, I gave up on Windows and assumed that I could get my laptop running with Suse. At first I had really big network trouble. I could get it connected, but every time I rebooted it wouldn't connect and wouldn't show me my wireless router until I deleted the connection and rebooted again. Then I tried Ubuntu; what a huge mistake. It worked great with the network, but it's an incredible PITA with loading software and security is a disaster; any user can su with their own password. I was looking for a solution where my girlfriend couldn't add things she didn't understand where harmful, and there is no good reason she should know. So, I went back to Suse and after getting the network up again, I went through the enormous online update. That fixed the network disconnection problem!!! Next I had used a Samba mount to save my M$ files to my desktop. I couldn't get Samba running from either Ubuntu or Suse as client, and NFS turned out to be a huge time investment. I remember the days when I just typed in the server and client information and it just worked. After quite a few hours I hit on the right combination and that is working just fine too. Now I just need a reliable way to kill the Synaptics touchpad; it doesn't stay off when switching users or timing out to a login screen. I wish there was an easy way to have it turn itself off when a USB mouse is plugged in. For now I'll just make a couple of scripts and put them into the screen menu so my g/f can remember how to turn it off. The webcam works right out of the box too, so life is now good. As long as I have one box, my desktop, that can dual boot M$, then I can update any hardware devices that are only supported by M$ applications. I'm a very happy camper. [opensuse] kmail works great on desktop, very slow on laptop

Hello, As I am using kmail in KDE 4.9, I found that it installed really well and easily on my desktop, but not so well on my laptop. Here is probably the principal difference - the desktop was a clean install of opensuse 12.2, while the laptop was an upgrade. Both were done from the DVD. The difference in performance is this. On my desktop, when I set up my accounts, it took all of about 5 minutes (ok, maybe a little longer, but it finished quickly) to download all 5000 emails that I have in different folders into kmail (I have offline mode selected, and I am using IMAP on a gmail account). On my laptop, I am going on 9 hours now and it is still working on it. Another difference in performance is that on my desktop, I can select 50 old emails that I don't want anymore, and hit delete, and within 5 seconds they are all gone. On my laptop, I select just one email, hit delete, and it takes a really long time - I waited 20 minutes and then gave up and aborted the deletion. All my settings for kmail are exactly the same, as I had it next to the desktop and set up the accounts and identities exactly as I had them on the desktop. So, short of having to do a clean install of opensuse 12.2, which I really don't want to do as I have several other programs that took a lot of work to install, what might be the cause of this? Are there some networking libraries or something that I need to look at? My laptop is also running on wireless, while my desktop is plugged in. However, my speed in browsing the internet in firefox is the same for the desktop and laptop. I appreciate any hints on solving this one. Also please let me know what further information I need to post. My email accounts are all gmail IMAP, and they were set up with the autodetect on port numbers standard for gmail (IMAP port 993, SSL/TLS, Clear text authentication; SMTP port 465, SSL, LOGIN authentication). -- G.O. [opensuse] Firefox crashes constantly on 12.1 after a recent update

After installing the most recent batch of updates on 12.1, my Firefox refuses to display any pages, crashing immediately. I tested common websites like gmail, bbc.co.uk, as well as a couple "plain html" websites. Starting a fresh user profile fixes the problem, but... 1) What could have changed to cause such behavior? 2) Starting a new profile means losing bookmarks, passwords, history and various bits of configuration. I know I can keep transferring each bit and re-testing, but that's a pain. Is there an easier way? [opensuse] Laptop & dockingstation with second monitor

Hi, This weekend I installed OS 12.2 on my laptop as second boot. Seems to work fine. This morning, at the office, I tried to use my dockingstation with my second monitor. That seems not to work out of the box, so I'm asking for help ;-) What my docking station is : it's a device where I plug my laptop in to have more USB, a real printer-port, extra display-connectors, etc. It also has an extra power-button so you don't have to open the laptop to power it on. It's not connected via USB, but on the underside the laptop has a big connector that plugs into the docking-station. My laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4500 series display-chip. Under Ubuntu I configured the system so I don't have to open the laptop to use my bigger screen as primary display. One problem I have though is that I manually need to change resolution when I switch from laptop-display to stand-alone display. I can live with that if needed. Under OS I went to Configure Desktop/Display and monitor. There I see the two displays and I can set the resolution. I can't set up Multiple monitors though. FWIW, the stand-alone display is connected via a displayport. So how can I set up that when I use my laptop "standalone" I use my laptop-display ? And when I dock my laptop I use my stand-alone display. In both situations using the native lcd-resolution. Thanks for any help.
