[opensuse] installation error

Started to intall 11.4 on a new laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Installation from DVD downloaded (MDsum checked). After the various choices of partioning and software (accepted defaults for partionning and mostly for software), when installation begins, it stops almost immediately with: failure occurred during following action: creating volume /dev/sd7. System error code was: -1007 sda7 was to be the swap; sda8 root (ext4), and sd9 home (ext4). sda1 is Windows/C; sda2 is Windows/D. I suspect the reason for using 7, 8, and 9 is that this is the third try, and that the first one set up 3,4 and 5. The Windows partition appears to have been correctly shrunk, and Windows will still boot. The installation suggests these three linux partitions be set up (and gives me the chace to alter them), so my guess is that there is space there but unpartitioned. When the error is presented, it asks if I want to go ahead anyway: so far I have said no. Machine specs: Intel mobile i5-241M 2.3Ghz; NVIDIA GT 555M 2GB PCIe; 8 GB DDR-3 1333; motherboard: Intel HM65 Express Chipset Mainboard. Suggestions? [opensuse] OpenSuSE 11.4: E17: menu: YaST (Administraitor Settings) FAILS

OK now while I don't like yast's package management interface, and thus use zypper, there are times when I need yast or yast2 to do something else... Now If I understand correctly yast2 is supposed to be the gui version of yast that required X and yast is the curses equivalent that can be run in a virtual console such as tty1 without X... But while I'm glad that there is a curses equivalent, I find the gui version less confusing. Ever since kde4 proved incompatible with my brain, the only gui's I use are E17 and E16 Or under extreme duress xfce... And by default, I use E17 And if it matters I boot to runlevel 3 and use startx when/if I'm ready for a gui. Though admittedly, most of the time my first user command is startx... E17's applications menu only mentions yast once. And that is at menu->applications->System->YaST (Administrator Settings) Since there isn't a separate choice for yast2 I would tend to assume that the menu choice would actually point at the gui yast2, but I can't prove it. You see when I select yast from the menu, I get a small popup that prompts me for the password. I don't know if it's based on the sudo settings or not but since my sudoers file has "targetpw" on the defaults line it shouldn't matter because it should want root's password. Which appears to be true because if I use my own the pop-up simply exits immediately. But if I enter my root password, some text output that looks like the stdout and/or stderr I'd expect in an xterm if I call a gui application from it. But this text scrolls by so fast I can't read any of it before "Poof" the popup window closes. And yast2 doesn't start. I guess it's possible that it's trying to start the curses version of yast, but in that case it should be opening an xterm to run it in, and that doesn't happen either. I've tried starting yast2 from an "xterm" (actually a "konsole" window, {konsole being one of the few KDE apps I still use in spite of kde4}): I've done this in three ways with different results: su -c /sbin/yast2 which yields over 300 lines of stderr (see http://pastebin.com/AgwCap3W ) and no yast of any kind... sudo /sbin/yast2 which actually starts the curses version in the current konsole window... But if I open a root shell first: su - yast2 I get only about 9 lines of stderr (see http://pastebin.com/CwJtbKLS ) before the gui yast2 control center does actually open a functional window. This bothers me because I much prefer to use either: 'su -c "command arglist"' or 'sudo command arglist' to start an admin level gui than to leave an open root shell that I might forget to close hanging around. And of course because there should be a working yast menu choice in the gui menu on an OpenSuSE system, shouldn't there??? Can anybody tell me how to fix this? [opensuse] bash -- Where in the heck are "^M...80 spaces...^M" getting written by tee?? (can I catch it?)

Guys, This is baffling... another rankinism... I get that this is a carriage return in the file and it is usually associated with dos/unix editing of files, but I can't tell if I'm causing it or if it is just dvgrab. If I output sdtout/stderr to a terminal all looks good, but when I check the log file, I have two spaces between every line. It could be me, but I can't see it! Anybody else see anything wrong with the tee call or anything else that could be causing it? Other than me doing something dumb, it looks like it is just dvgrab spitting out 'a carriage return + 80 spaces + another carriage return' with every dv clip it processes... If it is dvgrab, then is there a way I can have bash strip this info before it gets written to the files? The terminal does it by default evidently, because the output I get from stdout/stderr looks correct in konsole, so can I pipe the output through something (hopefully lighter than sed) that would strip it before I pipe it to tee? -- David C. Hi fellow foxers; Does anyone know where I can get an rpm for the REAL Firefox 5? Every link I've followed brings me FF 6 even when the rpm name says it's ver 5. Want to revert back to version 5. Well that depends on what you want from it. AND how you configure it. While there are enough improvements in E17 which is part DE to make me use it more often than E16. E16 itself, which is strictly a WM, is more stable. Once configured to my taste I find either one easier to use than xfce, gnome kde4 and even kde3... But like any other WM or DE I've tried to date, both take MUCH customization before I'm comfortable with them. For starters I dislike losing focus just because the mouse drifted off the window I was typing into so I always have set the "click to focus" option. And I have to disable edje flipping to avoid the desktop area from changing just because that #&$#*&#$#@ rodent drifted too close to the edge... Then, I've got to restrict the mouse bindings and recreate a totally different set of keybindings (Just like I would have to with kde, xfce) Though in fact, unlike the others (including e17, with E16 I can just edit a text based key bindings file, and/or copy it from a previously configured e16. That means I usually set up e16 first... And for me that includes compensating for its greatest weakness (the lack of a run prompt) by assigning <alt>+<F2> to either xfrun4 If I've also got xfce installed, or to the yakuake pop-up konsole emulator that works as a good substitute as long as I remember to append an & to most commands... > Or maybe my KDE4 sensibilities are showing :-) Well now that brings me to mention another thing I do with E1[67] even more than I used to do with kde3 which used to be my ONLY desktop that kde4 kind of dumped on. I understood that the devs had a vision of a new way to organize ones tasks that they thought was better than grouping them by desktop areas (or as some call them workspaces) But I always needed to set most of my application & terminal windows up to something close to a "maximized" state in order to have a a reasonable line length with a font size I could actually read. And pointing at task bar buttons with a mouse was not for me, so I like knowing that with <ctrl>+<F-key> I could select the desktop where I was already running the app I needed without having to look for it. For example I know that If I want my email client it's always running in the desktop area pointed at by <ctrl>+<F2> If I'm running an opera session it can be found on <ctrl>+<F1> where as there are some differences in the kinds of things I run firefox (complete with noscript) for. So that would (except when called by a link in my Email) normally be found at <ctrl>+<F5>. If I've got a root process running I'll find it on <ctrl>+<F11> or <ctrl>+<F12> depending on if it's a gui <F11> or runs in a root shell <F12> And each and every one of my desktop area's has a different background, which aids in being sure that the application I'm about to open will be located where I'll expect to find it later. E17 does occasionally have a glitch. But not very often. And if an upgrade brakes something, well that's why I run 4 different Linux on my laptop, and 5 on my desktop, As long as I don't update the last one until at least one of the others is fixed, A bad upgrade never stops me cold. I simply either switch to e16, if e17 is messing up, or reboot to a different distro until I have the time to work on the problem... But neither E17 nor E16 are for everybody. So while I might despise what kde4 did to kde, that doesn't mean you have to. It might be that kde4 is the best environment for you. in any case I hope you enjoy whichever one you choose to use. [opensuse] Real World Sata-II disk-to-disk throughput? 77MB/sec is that about right?

Guys, Copying video between two Seagate ST31500341AS disks with ext3 filesystems I get about 77.8 MB/sec. Given they are supposed to be 300 MB/sec: "Is the 77 MB/sec close to the real world max I should expect?" I understand that the 300 MB/sec is the 'theoretical max' throughput, but I have never really thought about what the 'real-world max' should be. I know there are various factors from hardware to number and size of files that impact the rate, but I'm just trying to get an idea if this is reasonable. [opensuse] 11.4 x64 and LibreOffice Python Problem

Hi ! I have problem with LibreOffice 3.4.2.6-2.8 (SuSE build from stable repository) and Python/Uno. I wrote a test function in Python which obtains and changes cell content in Calc spreadsheet. Right it is possible to obtain cell content from Python, but it is not possible to change it. The application I'm writing is quite complex, and it requires numeric & scientific libraries like numpy and scipy. With "standard" LibreOffice and its "built-in" Python interpreter it would be a problem. [opensuse] [OT] MAPI and Linux e-mail clients

Our organization has gone fully over to the dark side. E-mail is now only available via MAPI. They have no interest in installing IMAP/POP/SMTP in their Exchange server. (Note the us/them tone...) End of discussion. Sigh. On Linux, I can use the web interface to outlook in a browser. But that is about it. I have yet to find a MAPI client solution for a Linux e-mail client. At least not that I can run on openSUSE 11.2 or 11.4. (The MAPI support for evolution on OBS is strangely in a different repo with different dependencies than evolution, making installation very obtrusive to the rest of GNOME. Why the evolution MAPI plugin is not in the evolution repo so this is minimized is a mystery.) Has anyone found a working MAPI client for openSUSE? The searches I have done indicate that this is not ready for prime time. Perhaps because the protocol is poorly documented. Some sites offer as solutions the installation of additional software on the Exchange server. I would imagine that in most places this will not happen. A MAPI client for Linux is needed. Any pointers or suggestions on dealing with MAPI from openSUSE are welcome. I am hoping I have missed something.
