[opensuse] YaST2 software manager questions

Hi everyone, Questions on YaST2. Whenever I load up the software manager, it goes to the normal startup screen, "Starting the Software Manager." It has 2 things it has to do: - Initialize the Target System - Load the Configured Repositories The first item is always checked and completed right away. The 2nd item always takes a long, long time to load. It indicates it is downloading something from an ftp site for a remote something or other. Inevitably I get multiple instances of a dialog box saying something about not being able to connect or not finding something, and asking if I want to "skip autorefresh" or retry or abort. Sometimes if I make sure and try and wait to have it finish (by clicking "retry" whenever the dialog box comes up), I may have to wait up to 45 minutes for the process to complete, depending on internet speed at the given time. If I hit "skip autorefresh", it is much faster and gets me to the screen I need to find packages right away. Here are my questions: - what exactly is it downloading from the ftp site? - if these are "configured" repositories, doesn't that mean they are already installed on my system? - If so, why does it need to connect to the internet to download something, when these things are already installed? [opensuse] cannot adjust bash profile settings

Hi all, I am setting up my laptop with OS 11.4 32 bit and KDE 4.6.00. Just a few setup problems. First of all, I have a high resolution monitor, so all my fonts are small. I am working on that. But the first thing I want to adjust is the profile setting on bash. I go to settings -> configure profiles -> edit profile, and I try to change from small font black background with green color to white or anything else, and it won't adjust. I tried to slide the slider bar to make the font bigger, and on the dialog box it shows a bigger font, but it does not take the bigger font. The "apply" button doesn't do anything, or gray out or apply any changes no matter what changes I make. I have made the adjustment on my other pc with no problem. It seems like the application of any changes I make is disabled, whether I hit the apply button or the ok button. Can anyone tell me what to do next? What my system has is Python v2.7, which it got from the DVD original installation. I found what I take to be the right repo to update from: <http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/languages:/python/openSUSE…> and tried to add it to the repos in YaST. [opensuse] Screen resolution problem

Hi all.. I'm having a screen resolution problem on my HP laptop with ATI Radeon mobility. When installing openSUSE I chose 1280x1024 for my screen, it worked perfectly on both the laptop screen and the external VGA monitor. But, when I start X and KDE, the resolution on the external VGA goes down to 1024x768 while the desktop is still presented in 1280x1024. How can I force the external VGA into showing the full 1280x1024 screen? When I look in the global screen options in KDE, the maximum for VGA is showing 1024x768 while the internal LCD can be set to 1680x1050.. [opensuse] GNOME Desktop: Why diversity on the "BLACK" tones

Hi, I Noticed in the past and currently that GNOME is generally representing a "less dark" BLACK than KDE, when showing black text on the screen. Tonite I noticed other little detail: under GNOME 3.0.2 Desktop, Evolution is showing a TXT composed email as light-black/gray tone, while an HTML composed email appears with a better, brilliant, darker black. Wonder why this happens and if exists a way to set a "super dark" black, independently of the type of the desktop environment/application. [opensuse] KMail2, moving and copying broken

Since some time now I have problems with copying and moving of emails. In one case I wanted to return an email which slipped through the filter from a sub- folder into the inbox. It was moved but not into the inbox but under the "KMail Folder" which is the main header for the folders. Just now I wanted to copy an email from the sent-mail folder into the inbox with the same end-result. Emails which are landing int this "KMail Folder" can be read but not deleted moved or mishandled in any other form. This "KMail Folder" header is a non existent part of the kmail2 contents and a removal with force with midnight commander is not possible. The emails do not pose a problem. It is the handling of moving and copying of emails back to the inbox which is problematic. [opensuse] akonadi eating disk space

Since some days I am confronted with the information that I am short on disk space.. I have already deleted some big very old pdf and rpm files but today I found that in ~/.local/share/akonadi/file_db_data some 661 files where assembled with a total of 29 MB. The oldest with the date July 30 and of today, the 23 of august 281 files. Can somebody explain how to manage the amount of files and space occupied by these akonadi database? [opensuse] Cannot "send link" from Firefox under KDE4.7

Please see http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20use… for the basics & background. I'm talking about the "Send link" option from the _F_ile menu. I've experimented and this doesn't work. What I've done is set up a shell script that uses 'logger' to indicate its been invoked and then execute 'thunderbird', in place of the calls to 'thunderbird' in the instructions of the above. Its clear that this script is NOT getting executed. The script does work, I've used it manually. The path - whatever - from Firefox by whatever internal path is not executing the program filled in. I've tried this with both the Firefox from the openSuSE repository and the one downloaded Mozilla. This is currently FF 6 and TB 6, but I tried upgrading because this problem arose with FF 5 and TB 5 under KDE4.7 -- "Do not be quick to reveal judgement. Hidden judgement often is more potent. Hello all, I have do a fresh update of an OpenSuse to OpenSuSE 11.4. All works fine, except the update process. It always resolve download.opensuse.org into the IPV6 address. The result is the following: zypper ref Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Failed to connect to 2001:67c:2178:8::13: Network is unreachable I have tryied also to put into hosts the entry like: 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org but nothing, always resolv to ipvs. But the host command resolve it like this: host download.opensuse.org download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134 download.opensuse.org has IPv6 address 2001:67c:2178:8::13 Ipv6 is disabled: cat /etc/modprobe.d/ipv6.conf #install ipv6 /bin/true Urgent help needed, i am stuck.... Was wondering what does the following repo provide vs say oss and non-oss or kde:release:47 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.… Obviously it's opensuse 11.3, and looks like it has kde 4.7 in the repo as well. [opensuse] Problems with Virt-Manager 11.4

Guys, I been trying to use Virt-Manager to connect too my server at home. Now on 5 systems I keep getting the same error. Unable to open a connection to the libvirt manager daemon. I know my firewall is working correctly, because I can connect with my Knoppix Disk. And I can connect with my workstation running 11.1. [opensuse] openSUSE 11.4 and netatalk 2.2.0

Hallo, Have anyone managed to get netatalk 2.2.0 to compile and work on openSUSE 11.4? Are there maybe rpm packages for it somewhere? We use an openSUSE 11.4 system for Apple TimeMachine backups and one of the Macs are now running OSX 10.7 Lion. The new TimeMachine requires AFP 3.3 and that is only supported in netatalk 2.2.0. openSUSE 11.4 only have 2.0.3 available. [opensuse] KMail2, am I the only user with this problem?

Have the opensuse emails all in their dedicated folder. The nice point of answering was that under the properties of this folder you can tell it with which email provider you want it to send. This does not seem to work anymore. If I send the response email to the list the default isp is used and not the isp which I use among others for the list. Even if I have the right address in the header it comes back with the info that the list is a "subscriber list only". Looked under properties and everything was as it should be. Since some time my CPU is using between 40 and 49% of the CPU according to the system monitor.. Hi Just ran zypper had a bunch of updates then forefox got updated from version 6 that was working just fine now refuses to start with the complaint XML Parsing Error: undefined entity Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul Line Number 455, Column 9: <toolbarbutton id="inspector-previous- toolbutton" --------^ when started from the command line i get .. firefox *** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable). !!! On my system Iran out of space and was looking at the cause. Tmp was one of the culprits so I instructed the system via the /etc/sysconfig Editor to regularly empty the /tmp and /var/tmp. Looking further I discovered a lot of caches full with older rpm's. Most of these made by zypper. I can of course remove these caches manual but thought that it should also be possible with the above editor. Searched for it without success. Did I overlook something? [opensuse] updating HD device id, best practice

We're moving a bunch of sles servers to a new SAN. This process changes the ID of the hard drives. We're able to modify menu.lst and fstab to use /dev/sda1, etc, but when you do a kernel update, the grub gets re-written using the old had drive ID. I found /boot/grub/device.map has the old ID in it, but I'm not sure if changing that is enough. [opensuse] Adobe flash crash -- cycling round and round ... a KDE4.7 problem ?

If I visit YouTube I can't view the videos I get Adobe flash crashing. The message says to report the bug, click on that and I get a message to restart. Well, the restart actually RE-loads the page. Rise lather REPEAT. I just upgraded to FF 6.0 but I was getting this with FF 5.0 since I upgraded to KDE4.7 KDE4.7 also saw problems with the interface between FF and Thunderbird. I have problems starting a URL in TB and problems with 'send link' in FF starting up TB. By Problems I mean it works once after I start. I can fire up many links from a message in TB, but as soon as I visit the virtual screen that has FF, if I go back to TB it doesn't work any more. >From FF I get one shot after start-up of using 'send link'. Yes, I've been though the setup, googled and discussed this with people on the list. I'm confident the settings are right. Why am I confident? Why an I reporting this as a 4.7 issue? If I use Xfce I don't have these problems between FF and TB. Why don't I use Xfce? Well I prefer KDE :-) But right now I can't use Xfce because the 4.7 XDM doesn't work. And yes I've reported that to the list and no-one replied, but when someone described exactly the same problem I'm having they "fixed" it in the nvidia driver. Hello, after today's upgrade of Mozilla Thunderbird from download.opensuse.org-mozilla openSUSE BuildService - Mozilla repo I encounter unpleasant problems. Another add-on is not working (after Display Mail User Agent, Quote Colors and Password exporter not working since 5.0 also Remove Duplicate Messages) with new version (Thanks for frequent releases!). And Enigmail doesn't work. When I for example write new message, I get pop-up warning The language of Enigmail does not correspond to the language of your application! Enigmail can therefore NOT work. Please install a language pack for Enigmail, available from the 'Language Packs' page on the Enigmail homepage (http://enigmail.mozdev.org/langpack.html). What does it mean? Everything is set to Czech. And the URL above doesn't exist. http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download/langpack.php.html says "The standard Enigmail package contains many languages and can be used with no further requirements in localised versions of Thunderbird and Seamonkey. If your mail client is localised in a language that is not included in Enigmail, then you must install a language pack for Enigmail directly after you installed Enigmail. Please note that the language packs below only work for the specified Enigmail version." Well, there are only lang packs for Basque and Bulgarian. Enigmail was working with Czech TB 5 very well. Now, when I click to Enigmail's preferences I get error Parsing error XML: Undefined entity Address: chrome://enigmail/content/pref-enigmail.xul Line 49, column 1:<dialog id="enigmailPrefsAdv" ^ Nice. It seems I have to switch TB to English, but I don't see any such possibility in preferences. So, I warn everyone non-English user of Enigmail to think twice before upgrade of TB to version 6. And I'd like to ask how to switch TB to English, as mean-time work-around... I am trying to use this Samsung printer with a server. I can configure it in CUPS and print to it from the server, but not from a Windows 7 computer on the network. The print job doesn't even appear in the CUPS queue. However, I have no problem printing to a Lexmark printer on the same server, from the same W7 computer. Any suggestions about the best way to use an Android telephone with openSUSE? This is re: things like syncing contacts and perhaps mail. I am guessing the best is to use various Google services as the mediator. So, for example, sync evolution contacts and calenders with Google, and then sync the phone with Google. Or is there a more direct way that does not involve Google services? Hi All, In re: openSUSE 11.4 x86_64, GNOME 2.3 + some KDE apps/libs I create permanent read-only data DVD backup copies of my works-in-progress roughly every week to ten days. (This is in addition to nightly 'mirror' backups via rsync to a removable hard drive.) I am suddenly unable to create data DVDs using my usual DVD-R media. The process fails in both k3b and native GNOME Nautilus/CD-DVD Creator (brasero?) All previously written discs auto-mount properly and are navigable. The last data DVD set I successfully created was on Aug. 11, 2011 I have since installed quite a number of updates as prompted by 'on-line update'. A copy of the relevant output of 'rpm -q --last' has been uploaded here for review; i.e. I've trimmed those items installed before the last successful burn: <http://cehartung.com/dvd-debug/latest-package-updates.txt> I guess my first question concerns these updates. I don't recognize any 'core' CD/DVD burning libraries as having been affected since the last successful burn. That's probably a reflection of my lack of knowledge in this area. If you're familiar with these things, could you please take a look at the list and advise me which, if any, may have broken the configuration? Hi. I have an old ASRock motherboard K7VT4A and also a K7VT6. Both motherboards have SATA connectors on them. I use a PATA drive where the opensuse is installed on. I would put a SATA drive on both computers, but the SATA drive is not detected. What I mean is I have customized keys, menu, apps, overlay files that I would like to merge with the fluxbox relative files when a new user is created. All, Here is a neat little trick that it took me a bit to find, so I'm passing it along. To insert special characters from the keyboard in OO/LO, without having to open the 'Insert Special Character' dialog, all you need to do is: Hold down Ctrl+Shift+U. Release "U" key (while still holding Ctrl+Shift Enter Unicode symbol's hex code (leading 0's not required) Release the Ctrl+Shift keys Try it! To enter the section mark '§' do: Ctrl+Shift < tap 'u' > a7 < release > The keycodes are listed in the Special Character dialog. For the few you usually use, remembering the code is a snap and not having to touch the mouse is a big time saver. Works in most other apps as well. You can also change the Ctrl+Shift+u sequence by redefining the 'Compose Key' designation in the xkb options. (I haven't messed with this, the Ctrl+Shift+u is easy enough... -- David C. Hello, I generated an ssh key on a Linux server and pushed the public key to the remote server's authorized_keys files with the following command; ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/linux_server.pub freebsd-server ...however a password is still being requested when logging in to the remote bsd server. Once on the remote server I can see the key for the linux server in the authorized_keys file. Any suggestions to resolve the password request? Thank you in advance. Hi, I have pulled in all of the below from packman - you can see that they all have "pm" in them. I think the problem is the missing gstreamer-lame package. I have found this package for other distros, but not for openSUSE. [opensuse] Can not log in via SSH on OSS 11.4, connection closes immediately

Dear all, I can no longer log using SSH on a server machine. Connection to mail.test.com. closed.[/QUOTE] In the log file, I see: sshd: Accepted public key frrom... sshd: pam_unix2(sshd:session): session started for user root: service=sshd, tty=ssh, rhost=herkules.test2.com sshd: error: PAM: pam_open_session(): Permission denied When I start sshd -d, I see the following responses debug1: do_pam_account: called Accepted publickey for root from 10.0.0.1 port 42015 ssh2 debug1: monitor_child_preauth: root has been authenticated by privileged process debug1: PAM: establishing credentials PAM: pam_open_session(): Permission denied debug1: Entering interactive session for SSH2 The users ahould be authenticated against a (local) LDAP-Server, using SSSD; I can login via shell locally as well as via Samba, So I think, that it's not an LDAP issue. The history of theis failure was, that I had to fiddle around with the AppArmor tool before, because I have had installed AppArrmor unintentionally. I managed to make SSHD work with AppArmor; but as AppArmor caused thousands of other problems (samba, ldap, etc) I decided to switch off AppArmor again, with the side-effect, that everything works nicely now except SSHD... Would be nice to receive any hint. As you are seeing, the multimedia packages that ship with openSUSE are generally broken or incomplete. [opensuse] reset .bashrc config

Hi all, I added some lines of code to .bashrc for having some hilighting colors. every thing works fine but i found a bigger problem is that my rm command is linked to svn it seems like when i do rm filename is equivalent to svn delete filename. I am not even sure it is due to that code that i added to my .bashrc. but i want to try to reset it as it was by default. [opensuse] DVD styler

Some time ago DVD styler broke. There have been updates but I find that I'm still unable to use it successfully. I was just wondering if anyone has been able to use DVD styler recently. Currently, I use the windows version which seems to work okay. I recall someone mentioning that there was a problem with ffmpeg and that was why the linux version was not working. [opensuse] nvidia / login failure with recent update

I just did my periodic 11.4 system update through YaST2. On a reboot, although the logging shows that level 5 has been reached, I do not get a login screen. I get a login prompt. I can login as root. A startx brings up KDE, etc. OK. If I logout to change user, I am back to the login prompt. I can login as myself. But startx fails due to a missing file or something (I can't see at the moment). The only way to use my stuff is by 'ssh -l' to localhost. The update brought in new nvidia rpms. The ones installed now are: nvidia-computeG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-275.21_k2.6.37.1_1.2-6.1.x86_64 x11-video-nvidiaG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64 I see that nouveau is actually loaded. Some messages flashed by during the nvidia install which said that a switch was being made to nv, but some other messages might have said otherwise (too fast to see). If I do a switch2nvidia command, I get ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Switching the use of "nv" driver of X.Org to "nvidia" driver of NVIDIA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ head: cannot open `/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for reading: No such file or directory SaX2 generated xorg.conf not available! But I thought SaX2 was dead. I have not had such problems with nvidia updates before. Something is broken and new rpms posted. This is urgent. Hello, I cloned my HD, using clonzilla, to a 1 TB drive however once the OS boots up (OpenSuse 11.2) the partitions aren't correct.
