[opensuse] nvidia / login failure with recent update
I just did my periodic 11.4 system update through YaST2. On a reboot, although the logging shows that level 5 has been reached, I do not get a login screen. I get a login prompt. I can login as root. A startx brings up KDE, etc. OK. If I logout to change user, I am back to the login prompt. I can login as myself. But startx fails due to a missing file or something (I can't see at the moment). The only way to use my stuff is by 'ssh -l' to localhost. The update brought in new nvidia rpms. The ones installed now are: nvidia-computeG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64 nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-275.21_k2.6.37.1_1.2-6.1.x86_64 x11-video-nvidiaG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64 I see that nouveau is actually loaded. Some messages flashed by during the nvidia install which said that a switch was being made to nv, but some other messages might have said otherwise (too fast to see). If I do a switch2nvidia command, I get ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Switching the use of "nv" driver of X.Org to "nvidia" driver of NVIDIA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ head: cannot open `/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for reading: No such file or directory SaX2 generated xorg.conf not available! But I thought SaX2 was dead. I have not had such problems with nvidia updates before. Something is broken and new rpms posted. This is urgent. I think I have fixed the problem. Somehow, perhaps a couple of updates ago, the G01 nvidia rpms got added. I use the G02 versions (GeForce 6150 LE). I removed the G01 versions and downloaded/reinstalled the G02 versions. Now I have the nvidia driver, and all seems OK so far. The reinstallation flashed the same errors about the xorg.conf file as in the previous message. But nvidia was picked up on a cold reboot. If what I encountered before is typical of nouveau, that driver needs a lot of work to be considered a default. On Sat, 13 Aug 2011, Joseph Comfort wrote:

Though I've run into this several times on various machines lately, I don't know if I ever figured out what causes it. It could be due to a change made in /etc/sysconfig, either DISPLAYMANAGER= in displaymanager, or DEFAULT_WM= in windowmanager. Check if either of these files got current timestamps during your updates.

There was a security policy implemented to prevent startx as normal user. To work around this new limitation, remove the comment from the last line in /etc/permissions.local and then run SuSEconfig to update the permissions to permit setuid on /usr/bin/Xorg.

There are pieces of SaX2 left in a legacy package, but I don't know what good it/they are any more. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." This module is compiled for kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2 which is original 11.4. Current kernel is 2.6.37.6-0.7 (command to see is "uname -r") and I've seen couple of people on IRC having problem with old kmp. It seems that you actually don't have new rpms. I don't know did they post new ones, as I use Nvidia installer script. Refresh Nvidia repo and check with YaST Software Management for newer versions, if there is none, then you can use: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_the_hard_way to solve the problem. Don't forget to remove nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-... before you run nvidia installer script.

Check with: lsmod | grep -i nouveau

Obviously "switch2nvidia" doesn't know about SaX2 and that "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" is not used, except in special cases.

I am experiencing this problem with not getting the login screen at RL5. KDM is aborting. See below. 1. Starting /usr/bin/Xorg via startx is a permissions problem. Easily fixed :-) 2. This has nothing to do with nvidia. I'm experiencing it on my laptop with a ATI The problem manifests as - see /var/log - Aug 14 08:48:50 BigBoy kdm: :0[5544]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter Aug 14 08:48:50 BigBoy kdm: :0[5544]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 1, signal 0 I have run "kdm -nodaemon -debug 9 and tracked the interaction between kdm and the greeter. All of a sudden it does for no reason that is apparent in the log. And the log is VERY detailed at "debug 9" -- "Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom". -- Merry Browne -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
