I just did my periodic 11.4 system update through YaST2. On a reboot, although the logging shows that level 5 has been reached, I do not get a login screen. I get a login prompt.
I can login as root. A startx brings up KDE, etc. OK. If I logout to change user, I am back to the login prompt.
I can login as myself. But startx fails due to a missing file or something (I can't see at the moment).
I am experiencing this problem with not getting the login screen at RL5. KDM is aborting. See below. 1. Starting /usr/bin/Xorg via startx is a permissions problem. Easily fixed :-) 2. This has nothing to do with nvidia. I'm experiencing it on my laptop with a ATI The problem manifests as - see /var/log - Aug 14 08:48:50 BigBoy kdm: :0[5544]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter Aug 14 08:48:50 BigBoy kdm: :0[5544]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 1, signal 0 I have run "kdm -nodaemon -debug 9 and tracked the interaction between kdm and the greeter. All of a sudden it does for no reason that is apparent in the log. And the log is VERY detailed at "debug 9" -- "Preconceived notions are the locks on the door to wisdom". -- Merry Browne -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
