[opensuse] 11.3 prints, 11.4 does not

Latest available (7 months old) proprietary Canon PPD my printer requires, and preceeding versions, work in F14 and oS 11.3, but not in F15 or oS 11.4, apparently due to something changed in CUPS. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=683476 I don't "upgrade" to odd numbered releases, and even if this was not the case, I wouldn't "upgrade" to 11.3 anyway due to its immature KMS system and other flaws encountered running it on test systems. 11.2, notwithstanding Tumbleweed, currently installed, is out of support. Sound worked fine in 11.0, but not in 11.2, so I'm not keen on keeping 11.2 any longer than I must. I'd like to move to 11.4 in hopes of restoring sound as soon as the https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675793 fix is actually available. So, I see three options for moving to 11.4: 1-install 11.3, lock CUPS packages, upgrade to 11.4, or 2-install 11.3's CUPS packages in 11.2, lock them, upgrade to 11.4, or 3-install 11.4, excluding CUPS and its deps, install CUPS packages from 11.3 repos, or 4-upgrade 11.2 to 11.3, lock CUPS, upgrade to 11.4 Do any seem viable? If all, which stands best chance of success? I really don't like the idea of the upgrade route, for fear of sound not getting fixed. Changing printers is not an option. Space limitations, feature set, and the fact that I've not yet used up the first toner cartridge in 1.7 years of ownership (IOW, it's still new) dictate I keep what I have. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." [opensuse] kernel upgrades on older versions

It seems that there are a few stallwarts out there, yours truly one of us, who still use suse 11.3, 11.2, 11.1 and even 10.x as the main os. Most of these os's are out of maintenance, so a kernel upgrade would have to be manual. [opensuse] adobe reader and stuck image parts on screen

Hello: Adobe reader pretty frequently litters my screen with non-removable and unmovable image parts. These image parts are either small previews of opened pdf documents or titles/file names of opened pdfs'. They only disappear when I close adobe reader. An example can be seen here: http://i52.tinypic.com/10nt4x5.jpg Does anyone else see these? How could I get rid of them? I have openSUSE 11.2, KDE 3.5.10, adobe-reader 9.3.2 (openSUSE rpm). Graphics card is an old nvidia (GeForce FX 5200) driven by proprietary nvidia driver. [opensuse] Which Graphics card for openSUSE 11.4 and the future?

Hi all, I seem to have some problems with openSUSE 11.4 and graphics cards. Mine are relatively old nVidia (GeForce GT 220) and ATI's (Radeon X550/ RV370/SapphireX550 Silent). The nVidia card is suspect, I think an onboard memory problem. It freezes up irregularly. I want to replace it. With "ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.593" I get: ./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.YylA7t Verifying archive integrity... All good. ...... ..... which: "no XFree86 in <path>, ... Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:x86_64:lib::none:2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro Strangely, in failsafe the glxgears run well with about 380 FPS. Well, I'm fed up with these cards. The client is on a v11.4 laptop. [opensuse] Simple Network Booting Solution?

I already know how PXE works, etc. That's not an issue. The issue is I want to network boot openSUSE. Not an installer. I've read all the KIWI-LTSP stuff on the wiki but there aren't clear instructions and seems outdated (the documentation at least). All I was able to determine is in SUSE Studio website PXE images are disabled, but "SUSE Studio Onsite" is a paid (how many thousands? 50 thousand?) system that can build PXE booting images. That's basically all I need, build an image with a GUI and boot it over PXE. Even if I could boot the LiveCD over PXE, that would be fine. Is there a way to convert some image I build in SUSE studio to PXE image? What is even the difference? Just the proper support in initrd? Anyone have working recent instructions on how to accomplish this? I've completed indexing about 30K documents/files, but PDFs and office docs are still not showing meta-data. I'm more than a little hesitant about beginning to report bugs on issues such as this - I simply don't know what is supposed to work and what isn't. For instance, I tried running "strigi" via "ssh -X" which didn't work (presumably because "strigi" is somehow KDE internal?) That the preview for an office file is just a char dump must be a bug though, but am I wrong in thinking this whole thing is somewhat incomplete? More questions: How do I enable strigi for all users (of a machine)? [opensuse] Lost sound (KDE4)

I ran an upgrade of my sons desktop machine over the weekend, and it has now lost sound completely. Via YaST, I've deleted and reconfigured the soundcard, but this had no (apparent) effect. The card is currently detected as "d330 uT' with driver snd-intel8x0 - I'm afraid I don't know if that was also the previous config. AFAIR, the kmix application used to show several miscellaneous sliders, but they seem to have gone too. (replaced by 3-4 tabs with streams). Any suggestions on how to get sound back?
