Or just ignoring it? Of course we all know the links are broken and why. Of course we all know there are other ways to get the info. Of course it's old news. But being old news does not make the problem go away. It's still bad today despite being old news. Every new day it's bad all over again just like the first day. I'm sorry it's annoying to keep hearing the same complaint, but everyone else suffers the breakage anew every day so why shouldn't the breakers suffer the complaint anew every day as long as their damage keeps being a problem? It's not like this was some natural disaster or accident. It was an conscious and voluntary act. But forget me, the breakage hurts SUSE anew every day rather a lot more than myself or any single user. Countless broken links with suse's name on them do not make a good impression to people searching for answers to problems and finding only a broken link, when they are already in a poor state of mind from whatever the problem is they were having that sent them googling for answers. The point is that the people that broke everything don't seem to think that this is somehow bad. They say "gee just report the breaks". I say that's completely stupid, but ok fine here is yet another one. There are not merely many, but literally countless, as in there is no way to count them, and far too scattered for that to be even remotely possible. You can't find all the references to the old wiki that have been put into other documents in the world. We're not just talking other web pages but countless internal company documents, printed books and hard copies, personal notes and scripts and install media and livecd's and programs and support db's ... There was and still is a way for users to help fix everything, but it's not useful as there there is no way to know what needs to be fixed. It's an open ended forever job with no way to know when you're done. They pulled the trigger and switched more or less at random, after the new wiki had been up "a while" and "a lot" of stuff had been remapped, and "not many" or "no major" reports of gaps. All nice subjective meaningless terms in place of useful quanta. But a couple things ARE possible. It IS possible to know what are all the urls the old wiki provides and ensure they all work in some fashion before switching. A big job but a finite and knowable one and the largest part of which can be farmed out to users. The wiki admins can write and run a program to trawl the old wiki db and associated web pages and cgi's and compile a list of all possible old urls. Users and admins can then all work on that list until it's gone. Even easier than that, why isn't the 404 page simply trying old-en on the fly for every request that doesn't exist in the new wiki? It could try swapping in old-en, and if the result exists and isn't old-en's 404, then transparently serve up the old-en page and log the discovery in a bugzilla or or other db that not only admins but users could work on. It could even keep a hit counter for each miss/hit so you'd know which articles to fix first. [opensuse] 11.4 startup issues

A week or two ago, I upgraded from 1.3 to 11.4 on my wife's computer. It's an Intel I5-650 in a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 motherboard. Aside from the niggly little things that I'm gradually getting worked out, there's one big problem that I see no way to solve: the network interface usually comes up on a restart at 10mbps/half duplex (it also did this under 11.3, but not as often). Yast won't touch it, since I use NetworkManager, and I'm completely unable to find a way to fix it under NM (I also tried without success using ifconfig during an episode of trying to make xen work). The only way I've found to get back to 100mbps/full duplex has been to reboot into Windows, which comes up correctly, then reboot back to opensuse desktop (opensuse xen _always_ comes up in the slow speed, but I'm not yet ready to blame it all on xen). Gigabyte says the network interface is RTL8111D. hwinfo says it's RTL 8111/8168B, using driver r8169. Is there a way to fix the Ethernet speed using NM or ifconfig? [opensuse] horrible perfomance problems with powerful laptop

Hello, finally, the performance of Suse 11.3 (all updates applied) on my laptop (i5 quadcore, 4GB) is so awful, one needs to find out the reasons (or change the distribution, or whatever). I hope I find some help here. According to my experience, it's best to start trying to establish some real facts (which, unfortunately, seems to be already a non-trivial endeavour). One basic problem, which I already encountered with previous Suse versions, is that the frequency setting doesn't work: after a few days of running, at least one of the four cores will be set to a lower frequency. To eliminate this (but see below) I set in the BIOS "no frequency scaling". The frequency shown in Ksysguard since then is constantly "2,394 MHz" (but this can't be; see below). Another basic problem is that (reliably) after "sleeping" or "hibernation" the process scheduling doesn't function properly anymore, and typically all processes (whatever the numbers --- I tried hundreds) are scheduled only on two or sometimes even only on one core, while the other two or three cores are idle. Of course, would be great if this malfunction would be treated (finally, I thought Linux would be about speed; apparently these problems don't occur with the windows 7 still on that Laptop (though I don't really run that)). But to ignore that, and for the following I have always rebooted the Laptop (as if it would be windows). Direct after reboot everything is exactly as it should be. I have various computers, on which I perform (a lot of) scientific computations, where I can measure the times reliably, and the times are as they should be. But after a few days of running (and I have tasks, which necessarily run over weeks) performance becomes very weak. It doesn't show up on Ksysquard (or top), there the percentages and frequencies are the same, but for example Kde sticks like glue (reaction time for any button press at least a second, and if you wait for another week, it's 5 seconds; scroll bars become unusable). More reliably, the computations I run become a factor of 5 to 10 (in words, five to ten(!)) slower. Just running one process, memory usage about 50%. So nothing goes on, except that performance is awful. To make these numbers more trustworthy to the outside world, is there some standard (simple!) Linux tool/command to measure some (very) basic performance? I don't mean an elaborated benchmark set, but just a very simple common program, where people know what the running times should be? The only explanation I have for the slow performance is that the frequency goes down dramatically (without Linux noting it), and that can be demonstrated with something very simple. Of course, I have my own programs to run, and I can write a simple C program, but I guess it would make communication much easier if one would have a standard program. Hopefully we can shed some light on that. Thanks for your consideration. [opensuse] zypper dup 32 bit -> 64 bit ?

I have installed the 32-bit version of 11.4 on a system. I have decided that I would like to try the 64-bit version. I expect that the only way to do this is to do a re-install. But I thought I would ask if there was an alternative. Anyone know of one? Perhaps I will generate an autoyast description of my system, and change it to specify a 64-bit version, and then do the install with that. Any other suggestions welcome. It is not a production system. Hi, Is the build-in graphics for Intel's Core i7 (codename Syndybridge, full name "Intel® HD Graphics 2000/3000 (used in 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7/i5/i3 processor family)") supported by openSUSE 11.4 out of the box or via an OBS project? Or do I have to get drivers from Intel? But support is rather new, from January, http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2010Q4.html so I don't know if somebody picked that up already. Any warnings about problems I'm likely to run into? [opensuse] Change of user name over web

Hi, I'm running small LAMP server (users are classical UNIX users) and I'd like to enable my users to change their password for FTP over web. I don't see any way how to do it... :-( I heard about http://www.webmin.com/usermin.html but it seems as huge project and I heard there are some security issues. I didn't find any usable script (PHP, ...) to enable this function. I was thinking about WebYaST, but I do not know it has this ability.
