[opensuse] [11.4] only yast printer config can print (& only a test page)

I have a Canon MF4370dn IP attached printer that works OK usually with my 11.2 using the Canon supplied PPD driver RPM from Canon's UK web site. At the time I bought it a year ago it was the only MF printer I could find that claimed Linux support on the box, but it turned out Canon will not provide support or drivers to owners of this model who live in North America. Today I tried to set it up on an 11.4 system. On first try, YaST2 failed to find any printers, so I tried again and decided I had 2 the same. I deleted them and started over, ending up with only one. YaST2 can print a test page just fine. Trying to print with Konq or Firefox or Gwenview results in the printer reporting unspecified data errors and printing nothing, and a printer queue that resists attempts to delete the botched jobs from it. The document print status applet reports each such job's status as "processing". After cancelling a job the cancelled job seems to want to display in the applet in perpetuity. What I log out of KDE and back in, the previous botched job shows as processing in the printer applet unless I've cancelled it. Is there a way to ensure jobs in process at log out time, done in an attempt to escape from a deranged printer, are not revived when logging back in? Cycling the printer's power, with 5 minutes or more of off time, after clearing the botched jobs, doesn't seem to help either. Attempts to clear bad jobs using the CUPS web page in Konq don't do any better, and require a password to admin the printer even though there are no ordinary users configured on the system. I have to goto /var/cache/cups and delete job.cache before the printer will ever light up again, but this doesn't always work, since /var/spool/cups/* causes job.cache magically reappear whenever it feels like it unless I rccups stop and/or delete /var/spool/cups/*. Rebooting also causes the printer to beep and report data error, and the /var/cache/cups/job.cache file I deleted to be restored, every time I reboot, unless I delete the printer in YaST2 first, or /var/spool/cups/*. O_O Repeating the whole process, deleting the printer, rebooting, configuring a new printer, always produces the same results. Deleting /var/spool/cups/* helps. Apparently selecting to cancel a job in the KDE printer applet doesn't delete anything from /var/spool/cups/. Knowing that is still no help to figure out why YaST2 can print a test page but nothing else I try can print anything. [opensuse] logrotate - rotating several files named the same ?

I'm setting up to run logrotate on several logfiles with the same name, but in different directories. I'll have one logrotate.conf, but is it enough with a single logrotate.status file? [opensuse] HP Device Manager on openSuse 11.4

On 2 different 11.4 installs, I selected HP Device Manager for printing. I set up the same network printer. This first box would not print, but the second box would. In any case, when I try to manage a que, or change a printer setting, HP Dev Mgr puts up an error message saying to add user to "lp' group. I did that, and then I said to add user to "sys" group. Now I can manage the printer. But, what are these groups, and is there any security concern having my normal users added to these groups? [opensuse] 11.4 - madwifi, Why doesn't it respect the network blocks in wpa_supplicant.conf?

Guys, Here is a strange one. I have used this same laptop with 11.0-11.4. The wireless adapter is Atheros based and uses the madwifi adapter. I have a couple of networks I connect to that don't broadcast the ESSID and to handle this seamlessly without having to reconfigure yast->network devices every time I change between the networks, I have always included the proper network blocks in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf. This no longer works in 11.4 and I find myself having to fire up yast->network devices and manually change the ESSID to switch networks (primarily between home and work, but regardless, it is a pain) In wpa_supplicant.conf, your network blocks are simple brace delimited blocks of data each holding authentication information for a particular wap. On network activation, wpa_supplicant is supposed to step though the network block and connect to the one that is available (has best signal, etc...) That isn't happening. For example, in wpa_supplicant.conf, I have: ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_interface_group=wheel network={ ssid="skyline" key_mgmt=WPA-PSK #psk="snipped" psk=snipped } network={ ssid="work" key_mgmt=WPA-PSK #psk="snipped" psk=snipped } Apparently (or something similar to) the ESSID entered in yast->network devices is preventing wpa_supplicant for finding the alternate network when you switch from work to home for instance. (that is -- physically coming home from work and rebooting the laptop at home) Am I missing a new feature or setting somewhere? This was always simple stuff and I never had to mess with Yast when changing networks before. Anybody have any idea why the alternate network blocks in wpa_supplicant.conf are not getting parsed for a connection? What say the experts? -- David C. I.e. should it have auto-offered me, say, 11.3? (if I was running 11.2?), Should it know what was available and where it was at? [opensuse] The wierd condition of my kde4 addressbook

This is my desktop system: oS v11.3 / kde v4.4.4 -- doon to be upgraded to v11.4 /v4.6. Until now, I had thought that Akonadi and addressbook were in reasonable condition: The Kontact Contacts window displays "Personal Contacts" in the left column and a long list of contact names in the center column. When I enter a name in the To field of the Composer window, the corresponding email address is supplied, even for new or revised contacts that were added the same day. But what I have seen "under the hood" makes it hard to see why it works at all. In ~/.local/share/contacts, I find a large number of individual files with cryptic names, not a one of them dated in 2011 (although I add and alter contact details regularly). This is where Personal Contacts should be residing; obviously it is not. In both ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ and ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/ , where the Vcard file should be, there is a file (identical in both), named std.vdc, which is what one would expect to find there. except that its size is 0. It is dated 03/17/2011, nearly two weeks ago, whereas I most recently edited Personal Contacts yesterday and today. And the major question is: WHERE is the file that contains the "Personal Contacts" listing in the middle coloumn? From where does it automatically supply the email addresses of contact names for outgoing messages? (It also knows telephone numbers and other data, of course). If I knew that, I would be able to copy that file in some way to the laptop machine on which I will be relying for two weeks beginning on Thursday. How can I find that file? [opensuse] 11.2 does not automount ..

C´mon! I´d really would appreciate some help with this.. 1) Devices are seen by my computer (as revealed by dmesg) 2) I can mount them manually 3) .. however, KDE is not aware of them in any way I am using the device notifyer desktop applet. I have configured it to show "all devices" (i.e. internal hard disk as well) but it only gives text "no devices available". Is this a bug of the applet..? Or something related to dbus / devicekit / etc. thingies? It is funny that the devices do not show in anyway (even the internal hard disk) in the applet. Any way to debug this? Some log file, etc..? [opensuse] Firefox 3.6.x v. 4.0x - Thoughts?

Guys, I hate change for the sake of change. I am on the fence on the "mozilla I want to look like Opera" release. I have both running on different boxes. I don't like the fact that 4 swapped around where the buttons go (you can easily change that), but I do like the opera-like button for bookmarks that is available when the tabs are collapsed. The panorama feature is nice as well, although it is really slow at times. Are there any other technical reasons one way or another that should be considered in deciding whether to removed the lock preventing upgrade to 4 on 11.4? I kind of like them both. I have favorite themes for 3 that of course are incompatible with 4, but that isn't a show stopper. What's the general consensus on power versus usability? The laptop I'm worried about is the 11.4 laptop currently crippled with the Xorg/radeonhd problem, so graphics speed is way down. Anyone else run into speed issues on older hardware? No flames sought, just trying to get a better feel for the changes :) -- David C. [opensuse] Lancelot menu colours

I am trying the Lancelot menu with KDE4. The functions seem great, but ... The colours suck! The basic popup appears black text on a mid grey background. The second level appear as grey text on a black background and the text is unreadable -- not enough contrast and too small. I've poked around in systemsettings -> workspace appearance and the settings for 'kickoff' don't affect lancelot -- you might expect that, but there's nothing specific to lancelot.
