Trying to continue the discussion on a new thread. Sounds like a nice arrangement, could work for us, but I don't know anything about procmail. And I would need some kind of link to a tutorial before even attempting it. I have installed the new system for my friends, now to configure it. Any pointers to an online how to etc. would be great. I looked in the opensuse SDB but nothing seems to be close to what we need. Thanks for the tips. Some of the files under /var/lib/named do get copied over from /etc and SOME DO NOT. For example the actual files containing DNS records do NOT get copied over and therefore MUST be edited directly under /var/lib/named/... As a user, trying to grok what is the model behind the file system is not easy, nor can I find it well documented. Nevertheless, I will continue to argue that a more robust design would compare time stamps on files to be copied over, and before any files designated to be copied, the script should first back up the target files. That is a far more friendly design and far safer form of a programming practice. (you don't have to backup up to an infinite depth either, limit it to say 10 levels or whatever....) The overall design of the file system supporting the bind/named DNS server is really poorly thought out. Not only did I get confused and lost time and data trying to figure it out, but I will further argue that I do NOT understand why all servers cannot be architect in such as way so that ALL of their files can be found under a single "root" directory. And to me there is a real logical location - /srv/named that should hold ALL the files for the DNS server. (as well as all other servers such as /srv/tomcat6 /srv/ftp /srv/samba /srv/dhcp /srv/mysql etc etc....) Why do all these files need to be scattered all over the place? If necessary use links to "put" files in other places, but for heaven's sake make it easy to FIND ALL of them under a single dir!!! It would also make it a lot easier when migrating from one version of SuSE to the next, I could just put /srv in it's own partition and mount it then... (an yes I might have to do some reconfiguring, but at least I would have a good starting point and KNOW where everything is located...) [opensuse] openoffice, lock files and Samba

Hi I have word .doc files in a folder shared by Samba. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf: [global] security = USER workgroup = MSHOME [PUB] workgroup = MSHOME path = /home/steve/pub/ public = yes browseable = yes read only = no force user = steve force group = users When I mount /home/steve/pub somewhere else e.g like this.: mount -t cifs //192.168.1.2/pub /home/steve/notas -o rw,nobrl and then open /home/steve/notas using Dolphin, I can open a .doc file in openoffice, it creates a lock file and I and only I can edit and save it. It deletes the lock file when I close the .doc file and then someone else can edit it. If I browse to the shared folder itself, using smb:/ in Dolphin or Konqueror however and click a .doc file, openoffice opens a copy of it from the kde temporary folder, no lock file is created on the samba share since the file is not being opened from there. Further, trying to open the file from the openoffice open dialogue using smb:/ tells me 'You can only open local files'. Files stored on the share in openoffice format behave the same. In windows it works fine by clicking the file you want to open from the windows file browser. Word opens the document. The lock file is created *in the shared folder*. The file can be edited and saved correctly. No one else can edit the file until it is closed i.e. until the lock file is deleted. In other words my problem/question is why do I have to remount an already shared folder somewhere else in Linux to be able to correctly edit and lock files when using konq or dolphin? Using the smb:/ protocol and mounting by hand do not appear to be the same. opensuse 11.3, ooo-3.2.1 opensuse/novell versions (both 3.2.1.4 and 3.2.1.6 bulids behave the same.) steve:users has both a Linux password and a samba password. [opensuse] samba packaging gurus - what's the correct translation for spec file options to samba ./configure options?

Guys (Lars), I'm building an updated samba (3.5.6) for an old 10.3 box (to run in standalone mode) and wanted to make sure I got the configure options as close as possible to the spec file options. I think I have the basic options correct, but want to check if there are any additional options I should set/change to make sure that there are no conflicts with any other packages that may rely on the samba files being in any one particular place. I don't think there is any way to build an rpm from the spec due to non-existent dependency packages. From picking through the last 10.3 spec from discontinued/update it looks like the following will work: ./configure \ --prefix=/usr \ --localstatedir=/var \ --docdir=/usr/share/doc/packages \ --with-privatedir=/etc/samba \ --with-lockdir=/var/lib/samba \ --with-logfilebase=/var/log/samba \ --with-statedir=/var/run/samba \ --with-swatdir=/usr/share/samba \ --with-configdir=/etc/samba \ --enable-cups \ --with-libsmbclient \ --with-winbind Anybody see any missing or wrong options? Connected an iPod to USB port on OpenSUSE 11.3 and nothing shows up. Anyone know of software which will "see" the iPod directories? Is this even possible. [opensuse] Automount USB disk drive now fails

I recently upgraded a number of modules on my openSuSE 11.2 system and have now lost the ability to plug in my USB external Passport hard drive and have it automounted under /media like it use to... What happened and how do I recover this nifty feature? I have gone into the Device Notifier Settings and told it to Enable automatic mounting of removable media as well as checked the Automatically mount removable medial when attached. No joy.. The Device Notifier does not even detect that the USB drive was plugged in. The tool - lsusb shows it however, and I can manually mount it, a PITA... Internet searches resulted in similar complaints but most were a couple years back and so far have not yielded any joy... [opensuse] TFT monitor out of frequency problem

First of all, Happy New Year for everyone on the list. Second, my question: I have an 20" 1600x1200 resolution TFT monitor connected to my computer. I have openSUSE 11.2 and use nvidia binary driver, compiled from/by the nvidia binary installer (not the opensuse version). When I boot the system openSUSE boots nicely in console. The boot resolution is set to 1024x768 in 16 bit mode (by VGA= kernel boot option). X windows starts without problem as well in 1600x1200 24 bit mode. But when I try to change to terminal mode (ctrl+alt+F1) the monitor gives "out of frequency" message and does not display the terminal stuff. The question is why it is like that, and how I could fix it? [opensuse] How to remove drive icons from gnome save/open dialog places window?

Hello: Gnome/gtk programs open/save dialogs have a places window on the left which lists all the mounted drives. As I have many mounted partitions this list is too long, too many things are listed in that window. How could I configure gnome no to show the drives there?
