[opensuse] No sound to headphones

Hi, after installation of openSUSE 11.3 to Dell Vostro 1220 http://www.smolts.org/show?uuid=pub_b5e8a9b3-2a44-4453-8207-40f1ccc582b9 I found that after I plug headphones to the notebook, I still hear sound from internal speaker, but not from the headphones. It happens in KDE as well as in GNOME. When I boot from Ubuntu LIVE CD it works as expected. It did not happen when I was upgrading on ThinkPad. I'm not sure which information would help to solve it... I have actual system, nothing special. Also the hardware is ordinary... Any idea how to solve it? Did anyone faced it? [opensuse] Random hangs in 11.3...

Have been running 11.3 x64 KDE since it was released, with all patches, and must say that generally am very happy with it. But.... Don't know what the prob is, but very intermittently and seemingly randomly, I get an "almost total" lockup - X totally locks, on 1 occasion I did get back to a command prompt, but then seemed to lose keyboard access.... My initial thought is that I have an issue with either Firefox or Thunderbird, which have their data sitting on a vfat partition, and this always wants to check after this happens and a reboot - but are they causing the prob, or a result of..? Anybody else having these issues, or should I start looking at local hardware? New install OpenSuSE 11.3 (64) repo list? xfce? {e16 & e17}? Hi. It's been awhile since I ran openSuSE and I forgot a lot of stuff... However I decided not to upgrade my Elive installation, and that leaves room to install another distro on this HP Pavilion desktop with 1gig of ram amd-64 processors and (sigh) integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE graphics. Accordingly I just downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso and will install it as soon as I have a few hours of free time (yeah I've heard the install itself is faster than that but I'll need to change or disable almost every default keyboard shortcut on each of several desktop environments, find out how to eliminate almost all autoload/autorun functions. ( I hate it when I'm in the middle of typing a cli mount command for a freshly inserted disc or usb device when I have to tell some stupid popup to never mind, do nothing, and go away. ) & then I'll need to find out if it will honor my udev rule assigning ownership of my personal data partitions to my "user" login. And most likely, I'll have to convert the fstab from using UUID=$SICKstring references to LABEL=$humanREADABLEstrings references. etc... (Here's hoping the installer doesn't insist on reformatting my specifically labeled swap partitions etc...) Anyway I think I remember that the cli package management tool is called zipper? I can't remember a thing about what repos exist (nor how to add them) besides whatever the default ones are that the installer will automatically setup for me. Is there a list of what repositories are available along with what their for??? Also, I'll be wanting to disable any display manager in favor of a console (runlevel 3?} boot and startx when/if I'm ready for the gui to start. With PCLinuxOS, Elive, and Sabayon this is done with a kernel option in the grub entry. With *ubuntu it's now necessary to install a simple display manager such as slim that unlike kdm & gdm still honors a root command sequence such as: update-rc.d -f slim remove update-rc.d slim stop 20 2 3 4 5 . But I haven't the foggiest how to do this with OpenSuSE... Any suggestions on how to get a runlevel 3 boot, install both e16 & e17 as well as xfce, get a "repo provided" (proprietary) nvidia driver installed, or to tell me where I can find a good commented list of available repos, would be most welcome. [opensuse] why no "cups" entry in YaST Firewall Allowed Services in 11.3?

In the Firewall Configuration of YaST, the list of services to allow for the External Zone no longer contains "cups". Instead, When setting up the Printer Configuration to accept printer announcements from CUPS servers, YaST pops up a recommendation to open UDP port 631 in the firewall. How this will be more successful than working on KDE3 and making it a demonstrably better product is beyond my understanding. Of course I'm biased. For some reason KDE4 doesn't crash on me. For some reason I seem to have chose an icon set and other eye-candy that I find pleasing, though most of it is actually the installation defaults. For some reason I like the idea that the whole KDE team is working on fixing bugs and pushing the development further forward. For some reason I like the idea that the KDE team is fronted here by someone like Will Stephenson who has a polite and positive attitude and is respectful even to the KDE3 advocates and has been positive and encouraging about your efforts on KDE:KDE3. If nothing else, if I were a new user coming to Linux and choosing a DM, his calm reassurance would be more convincing than the rabid frothy denunciations of all and sundry that the KDE3 advocates on this list are exhibiting. And you know what? I've just tried the FACTORY. Maybe it is 'unstable' and 'broken' but it sure isn't crashing and it sure isn't 'ugly'. Sorry: when it comes to the test of actually using KDE4 without deliberate malicious intent (such as many Linux users might have when evaluating a Microsoft product) none of the complaints voiced by the KDE3 advocates holds. KDE4 may not be perfect, it may not even be suitable for everyone, but its not the mess the KDE3 advocates claim. Get over it. [opensuse] Passing along a tvtime solution

I have an - old - Sabrent TV card that has been working for a long time with tvtime. I tried to upgrade (as apposed to a fresh install) from 11.1 to 11.3. Something went wrong and had to go back to 11.1. After this, tvtime would crash with: xvoutput: No XVIDEO port found which supports YUY2 images. *** tvtime requires hardware YUY2 overlay support from your video card So I tried - everything - then - it finally hit me to check the settings of Display in YAST. Somewhere / somehow the setting for the card got changed to something about "VESA frame buffer". Tried to change it and could not. Deleted the entry, closed out and started over with autodetect. Now, the real card got detected - Intel G41 - and to my surprise - tvtime started working again. [opensuse] New Kernel

Hi folks This is going to sound strange but it has been so long since i have had to manually update the kernel i have basically forgotten the steps for opensuse As you can see from my sig block below i am using stock off the dvd kernel with normal updates if any i am have the odd pregnant pause now and then that i believe is the kernel thing I have the Nvidia driver from the repo installed and working ok now what and where do i get the kernel form and is it just a case of unpacking it with rpm or is there more daft question i know but it is probably 5 plus years since i have had cause to install a new kernel .. [opensuse] LDAP vs postfix

I am trying to move a mail server from OSE 11.0 to 11.3 and cannot seem to get past the following messages in mail.err (and other logs): Aug 12 21:37:40 ux-ose postfix/master[20835]: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable I have never used LDAP nor do I wish to but for some unknown reason postfix insists on it. How can I remove the LDAP entirely from messing with postfix.
