[opensuse] New install OpenSuSE 11.3 (64) repo list? xfce? {e16 & e17}?
New install OpenSuSE 11.3 (64) repo list? xfce? {e16 & e17}?
Hi. It's been awhile since I ran openSuSE and I forgot a lot of stuff...
However I decided not to upgrade my Elive installation, and that leaves room
to install another distro on this HP Pavilion desktop with 1gig of ram
amd-64 processors and (sigh) integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE graphics.
Accordingly I just downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso and will
install it as soon as I have a few hours of free time (yeah I've heard the
install itself is faster than that but I'll need to change or disable
almost every default keyboard shortcut on each of several desktop
environments, find out how to eliminate almost all autoload/autorun
functions. ( I hate it when I'm in the middle of typing a cli mount
command for a freshly inserted disc or usb device when I have to tell some
stupid popup to never mind, do nothing, and go away. ) & then I'll need to
find out if it will honor my udev rule assigning ownership of my personal
data partitions to my "user" login. And most likely, I'll have to convert
the fstab from using UUID=$SICKstring references to
LABEL=$humanREADABLEstrings references. etc... (Here's hoping the installer
doesn't insist on reformatting my specifically labeled swap partitions etc...)
Anyway I think I remember that the cli package management tool is called zipper?
I can't remember a thing about what repos exist (nor how to add them) besides
whatever the default ones are that the installer will automatically setup
for me. Is there a list of what repositories are available along with what
their for???
Also, I'll be wanting to disable any display manager in favor of a
console (runlevel 3?} boot and startx when/if I'm ready for the gui to
start. With PCLinuxOS, Elive, and Sabayon this is done with a kernel
option in the grub entry. With *ubuntu it's now necessary to install a
simple display manager such as slim that unlike kdm & gdm still honors a
root command sequence such as:
update-rc.d -f slim remove
update-rc.d slim stop 20 2 3 4 5 .
But I haven't the foggiest how to do this with OpenSuSE...
Any suggestions on how to get a runlevel 3 boot, install both e16 & e17 as
well as xfce, get a "repo provided" (proprietary) nvidia driver installed, or
to tell me where I can find a good commented list of available repos, would
be most welcome.
Thanks in advance.

you can do this with "systemsettings" easily.

search for packages on http://software.opensuse.org/search and add repos that interest you.

Others have probably covered it, but: (1) get opensuse installed (2) edit /etc/inittab and set: # The default runlevel is defined here id:3:initdefault: ^ (3) to start X when you want: cp ~/.xinitrc.template ~/.xinitrc and then you should be able to call startxfce, startenlightenment, starte16, etc.. 'zypper' not 'zipper'
Thanks... No wonder man zipper found nothing... <grin> Actually though, in the meantime I've done a lot of google searching because my "integrated" Nvidia card really hates Nouveau, All I got was a blank screen. Thankfully it eventually responded to some combination of blind keystrokes (heavy on <ctrl>+<alt>+<delete>) and the installer was smart enough to let me finish the process with the safe mode grub entry... And after a while I tripped on instructions on how to use "zypper" to install the nvidia repo and which package my geforce 6* card needed... {I was a bit frustrated by the fact that at some point during the install the screen said both installing grub to mbr and to the root partition wasn't enabled yet and I specifically set it to NOT molest my manually edited grub partition. ( I like to let each distro update it's own grub that I can chainload and/or copy info to boot directly from my TEXT menu grub. (I dislike graphic boot screens.) But of course it installed to the mbr. Fortunately I have notes on how to use the grub shell to fix that...} It would appear that on Aug 14, David C. Rankin did say:

Others have probably covered it, but:

# The default runlevel is defined here id:3:initdefault: ^ (3) to start X when you want:
Yeah, I used to know that. But a couple of distros I've used lately completely ignore that. And most of them (except *buntu) accept some form of kernel argument in the grub menu entry that will do this on a per boot basis... As it happens the above mentioned google search told me that OpenSuSE honers a kernel option of " 3 " for that. So I think I'll leave the default runlevel at 5 and keep the option of using a Display manager open via multiple grub entries... Speaking of which. while I don't think I added anything from that "Dimitry" repo you mentioned. Yast did show me several repos that I let it add and supposedly installed some version of enlightenment (Though I wasn't sure if it was e16 or e17) and even when I installed the WDM package which insisted on including some window manager to satisfy dependencies, when I let the default grub menu entry (the one without the "3" option) boot up the graphical login doesn't let me select an alternative WM to the xfce I installed from the dvd??? How does one get an OpenSuSE gui login with the ability to select session type just before logging in???
cp ~/.xinitrc.template ~/.xinitrc
and then you should be able to call startxfce, startenlightenment, starte16, etc.. If that doesn't work, then just edit ~/.xinitrc and change $WINDOWMANAGER to whatever wm you want to start here:
# # finally start the window manager # unset WINDOW_MANAGER STARTUP exec $WINDOWMANAGER
Well that is an interesting method... I do hope startx is still a valid method though, as once I get a little further into this I have a startx wrapper script that copies a pre-edited xinitrc-${WM} file to ~/.xinitrc and calls startx that I'm fond of using.
(4) as for repositories, you will need to look and see if Dimitry has the new 11.3 repo up for e16 and e17 at:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Enlightenment/
none yet. Other will have to fill you in on nvidia repos, but for:
02:28 zephyr:~> zypper lr -=<snip>=- You can just grab my exported repositories for ll.3 containing the list above here:
http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/openSUSE_11.3/repos/suse113repo.repo

zypper ar --repo suse113repo.repo
and it will automatically load all the repositories for you into your system. Note: in the file I have keeppackage=1 for most of the repos so the rpm files are cached in:
/var/cache/zypper/packages/<reponame>
and not deleted after install in case you want to use them again on another box.
And thanks for the extended repo list data... And the clue on how to
preserve the rpm cache...
Though many of these I wouldn't know what they are for...
(some are obvious, but others I just don't know WHAT they hold... I suppose
though I could try to browse them with firefox or opera to see if I can
figure them out??)
Still all in all. I'm real glad to see your repo data and especially what to
add to get access to e16/e17 (where I spend most of my 'puter time) (Once
I've made enough changes to the default key and (<shudder> mouse & edje
bindings) so that my fat fingers know what to expect that is. XFCE makes a
great backup desktop in case an update for the the still "under heavy
development" e17 should break something I depend on...
Thanks again!
