[opensuse] Google chrome and pdf files

Is there a way of setting Google Chrome to open pdf files into a new tab/window with an external app (e.g. Adobe Reader) instead of saving a file to some place ? Guys, As long as I was wading through this again, I thought I would post a cheat-sheet you could squirrel away for the next time you get to have the fun :p ** NOTE: if your disk configuration has changed - FIX YOUR /boot/grub/device.map FILE before proceeding !!! +++++++++++++++ Manual Recovery +++++++++++++++ Manual recovery of GRUB libs The *stage* files are expected to be in /boot/grub, which may not be the case if the bootloader was not installed during system installation or if the partition/filesystem was damages, accidentally deleted, etc. Manually copy the grub libs like so: [Arch Linux] cp -a /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* /boot/grub [SuSE] cp -a /usr/lib/grub/* /boot/grub +++++++++++++++ Normal Install +++++++++++++++ (1) type 'grub' (no quotes) If you are not sure which partition actually holds this directory, use the command 'find' like this: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 ( or 'find stage1' ) This will search for the file name '/boot/grub/stage1' and show the devices which contain the file. Once you've set the root device correctly, run the command 'setup' to complete the process. To set grub's root: grub> root (hd0,0) where hd0 represents the drive (hd0 - first drive, hd1 - second drive, etc..) The next number is grub's root partition (not the same as your linux partition). This is the partition you BOOT from. So, if you have a separate /boot partition, this is the '0' based partition number for your /boot partition. If you have NO separate /boot partition, then this will just be your / partition number. If you have a RAID setup, then define the array that will server as 'hd0', 'hd1' in your device.map file. Example: 00:21 archangel:~> cat /boot/grub/device.map (hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde (hd1) /dev/mapper/nvidia_baaccaja (fd0) /dev/fd0 2) Then, run the command setup grub> setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists....... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists....... yes Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists....... yes Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists....... yes Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"....... 15 sectors are embedded succeded Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0) 1+15 p (hd0,2)/grub/stage2 /grub/grub.conf....... succeded Done This command will install GRUB boot loader on the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the first drive. 3) Type quit grub> quit GRUB is now in the MBR. 4) Finally, edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file and you are done. -- David C. [opensuse] 2 Xcursors at once?

Guys, Here is a problem I have been looking at for a couple of months that is probably a side effect of a bug in the KDE4 kcm_gtk app. I have 2 Xcursors. For my kde apps and desktop, I get the cursor set in the kde control panel/mouse module, but if I move over a gtk app (mostly firefox and thunderbird), I get the cursor set in gnome. I didn't think this was supposed to be able to happen. But, sure enough, over the kde apps, I have the 'BlackStyle' cursor theme, but as soon as I move over FF or tbird, I get Azenis. Is there any way to tell KDE4 to just use the KDE4 set xcursor when KDE is running? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] How to make Amarok make sound

OS ver: 11.1. Amarok finds .mp3 files on a CD. Allows selection. File "plays" according to the runner and the spectrum display, but no sound comes out. Sound comes out of the machine on boot, but never again. Not from any source. Have tried Internet "YouTube" videos (Carl Smith, for example) that play on Windows, they play on Puppy Linux, but they darn sure don't play on SuSE. Please reply in words of one syllable, or similar. In step 4 of the instructions, it references Zypper. Zypper shows on my screen, but does not do anything, as far as I can tell. Nothing happens when I snap on the icon. I did follow the instructions to restart the alsa driver, but that seems to do nothing useful. I just noticed that I no longer have a speaker icon in the tray, so I don't know what the mxr is set for anymore. Things just go from bad to terrible. So, what now, experts? [opensuse] KDE4 - directory hinting for file dialogs - where did it go?

KDE4 devs, Another issue with KDE4 is that it doesn't do file dialog directory hinting very well at all. Meaning, for example, that if the current wallpaper is from your ~/img/wp/abstract/scene directory and you go to change your wallpaper, KDE4 just opens the file-open dialog in your ~/ directory instead of using the directory for the current-object (current wallpaper). The wallpaper example -- is just that, an example. This problem is pervasive throughout KDE4. I have opened a bug report to help get the issue fixed. If you have other examples or thoughts on the issue, please add them to: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=242830 The more thoughts and comments they get, the sooner this can get fixed. [opensuse] Help -- Anybody solved the gparted ntfs bug issue or have a cli workaround?

Guys, Girls: I need help -- again. The problem is the ntfs bug in gparted. It is frustrating, because I have read this guy solved it, that guy solved it, but there isn't any details of what they did. Grrr. A synopsis of the bug is here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php (the main gparted d/l page) What I am trying to do is add a lager hd to my son's computer that he has outgrown the windows partition on. The drive is presently partitioned as follows: sda sda1 - 40G Primary with XP sda5 - 2G swap sda6 - 20G / sda7 - 53G /home What I am trying to do is install a new 250G drive. The plan is to install the new drive as hd0 and then copy the 40G primary too the new drive and then grow it to 210G leaving roughly 30G unpartitioned at the end for whatever. Upon attempting the copy with gparted (0.52-9) the copy fails with an error saying that sda1 has a bad sector and that you need to boot into windows, run chkdsk /r (implies /f), reboot TWICE, and then the partition can be resized using the ntfsresize '--bad-sector' option. OK, great, so I unplug the new drive and boot into windows and run chkdsk -r, then hour later, I try gparted again -- same result. That's when I started poking around and ran into the gparted ntfs bug issue. How in the heck to I copy the partition and resize it if gparted is tanked? Copy it with dd and then just use the ntfsresize to hopefully force a resize. Any of you devs got a better work-around? One big frustration with gparted is that it doesn't (that I can find) provide a place to enter any extra options for the copy or resize. Anybody know any? That's where I'm stuck. If I'm going to go the dd route, does anybody have a quick cheat-sheet that tells how to optimize the copy blocksize working with ntfs? That one area I haven't mucked around a lot and God forbid I mess up my son's Steam Counter-Strike install trying to do this. What say the experts? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] Today's KDE3 Updates Broke 'kfmclient openProfile filemanagement' what to check?

Guys/Will After updates today from KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.0 (or comm or playground) broke some pretty standard stuff. The biggest thing I notice is kfmclient is broken. kfmclient --commands shows everything (dunno if that is like kcmshell --list, but I thought I would try). What say the experts? Also -- Outstanding KDE3 issues, just in case anybody has had any thoughts or ideas for fixes here: (1) My menu entries and control panel modules are still totally gone :-( (2) All gtk apps appearance is still screwed up. There is still a problem with kcm_gtk, kde3-kcm_gtk and kde3-gtk-qt-engine locks firefox/tbird and worse it no longer builds from .src.rpm? (first one of those I have seen) But, 99.9 percent of the updates are rock-solid. Thank you devs for putting in the extra effort to provide all the updates for KDE3. [opensuse] KDE4 - the most Frustrating bug - over a year old and still not fixed.

KDE4 Devs, Guys, why can't konqueror file manager start up looking like it did when I last saved its profile and closed it? I use konqueror with the detailed list view. That's what I like. I want to see the most information about my filesystem in the smallest amount of space with the most detail. That's why the heck we have a 'list' or 'detailed' view and 'tree' view available. But the problem with KDE4 konqueror is you have to completely reconfigure the view every damn time you open it, just to get a decent detailed view back. A picture is worth a thousand words. Here is a screenshot showing the way konqueror opens up every time: (153k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde4/konq-onstart.jpg This configuration of konqueror is completely F'ed up. The entire 'places' window (left pane) is collapsed. Moreover it's NOT simply closed, it is STUCK in some screwed up state such that you cannot simply grab the resize handle and fix it -- it won't respond. Instead, every time you open konqueror, in order to get your places panel back you have to CLOSE IT, then REOPEN IT before you can even begin to resize it to make it look right. So every time I want to use konqueror, I have to: F9 + F9 + drag and resize the left places panel before I can even see the filesystem. That would be frustrating enough it that were the only problem with the way konqueror starts, but that it just the tip of the iceberg. The whole right had side file pane is screwed up as well. The column sizes are mucked up every time konqueror starts. It looks like konqueror outsmarts itself by resizing and collapsing all columns to make sure all columns fit in the right side no matter how many there are. This completely defeats the purpose of having the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the window. We wouldn't need a scroll bar if all the columns were supposed to try and cram themselves in only the space provided by the right file pane. (think about it) In the right column, I want to have the permissions, owner and group information 'immediately available' so if there is a problem with file access, or if I'm just curious, I can simply click the scroll bar and see a concise tabular listing of that information on all files in a directory. That ability is completely defeated by the way konqueror starts every time, until I go through the process of resizing each column to the size I like it every time I start konqueror. That's crap. Once I am finally done with the tedious process, I have konqueror back in a usable configuration: (140K) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/kde4/konq-onstart-reset.jpg Then, because hope springs eternal, I diligently save my config with: Settings -> Save view profiles as... -> filemanagement Now saved, I expect konqueror filemanagement to open up looking the way it did when I saved the "view profile". Otherwise, what in the heck do we even have a "Save view profiles" option for. Not satisfied with simply saving the filemanagement "view profile", I even do one better. I go back and save the view profile under a completely different profile name, just in case there is some problem with the 'filemanagement' name -- lord knows it has been used many times over. So, I go back and: Settings -> Save view profiles as... -> dcrFM Unfortunately that too is a waste of time. Same results, opening dcrFM profile opens in the same broken way opening the filemanagement profile does. None of this would be nearly so frustrating aside from the fact that I identified this very issue during 4.3 beta 2 testing as soon and this bug was introduced and filed the bug report on June 9, 2009: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=195808 The bug is still listed as unconfirmed??? This is "incomprehensible incompetence." There is no excuse for letting bugs with a primary component of KDE languish for over a year. That however seems to be more of the norm with KDE4 than an exception. Spending exorbitant amounts of man-power and effort on useless eye-candy while letting real-wold functionality waste away seems to be the KDE4 M.O. Unfortunately this is but one example of many. What is the deal KDE4 devs??? (P.S. - yes I have reviewed the post and toned it down so everybody doesn't think I'm on a rant mission. I've changed all the original "hells" to "hecks" and so forth. But, I have got to tell you I am dismayed how KDE4 has squandered so much community good-will in the past two years that I'm to the point of just throwing in the towel on KDE4 and sticking with gnome and reminiscing about the elegance of KDE3 and how it all was squandered by a mismanaged and failed move to KDE4. KDE4 has some of the most brilliant desktop developers on the planet - the fault lies with the incompetent management of these resources throughout the entire KDE4 development process) -- David C.
