[opensuse] SUSE 11.2 - Suddenly KDE does not load.

Dears, I'm stepping fro the first time to the world of Linux. I'd setup SUSE 11.2 on my machine and everything was going fine. Suddenly, one day ago, when I started my machine, KDE interface didn't load at all only command prompt is loaded! [opensuse] vmware and keyboard layout

i have a strange thing happening these days. when i start vmware, my keyboard layout gets messed up. for example, i am typing this message in evolution. i do not get caps, or various other characters as the shift key seems to have been disabled. this happens when i start vmware. oddly, the apps in vmware windows xp do get proper characters. i see this problem in kde. i cannot check the system console because alt-ctrl-fx also no longer work. stopping vmware does not correct the problem. i need to reboot. ok, i guess there is a command that could probably reset the keyboard. but why is this now happening the last statement was a question, but i can't type a question mark. this happens every time i run vmware. i think it started at some time when kde was updated. i am not certain. except that it was not when vmware was updated. anyone else have this odd behavior i have a swedish keyboard. adding the keyboard layout selector to the kde system tray does not help. some keys change as expected. but the shift key ans alt-ctrl seem gone until i reboot. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. The array counting method will work nevertheless, as no shell word interpretation is done that way. AFAIU, your normal keys still work, but your modifier keys (Shift, Ctrl, etc.) don't work anymore after leaving VMware. Then the cited VMWare knowledge base article probably won't help you, it's about non-fitting keyboard assignments within VMware instances, not VMWare-induced problems on the host's key bindings. I can only guess the root cause of your problem, but maybe you want to try the following. (Step 4 has a test if my guess is right; maybe you want to try that out first, but then you'll face an additional reboot.) 1) Use the command xmodmap -q -pm | sed -e '1 d' -e '/^$/ d' \ -e 's/, //' -e 's/ (0x[0-9a-f]*)//g' \ -e 's/ */ = /' \ -e 's/.*/add &/' >xmodmap.mod-keys to create a xmodmap control file that resets the modifier keys as they were after login. 2) Create a script in key-reload your path #!/bin/sh xmodmap /wherever/this/file/is/xmodmap.mod-keys 3) Create your VMware problem situation. Make sure that you have a terminal window open that you can select by mouse. 4) Call "xmodmap -pm" If that reports key bindings, then the problem lies somewhere else and this approach won't help you. If that doesn't report any key bindings, call the script that you created in step 2). Check if you can use your modifier keys again. 5) If it helps, make sure you can call that script easily with a mouse, e.g., add it to your KDE/GNOME/whatever command menu. I have this problem with missing modifier keys regularly, though not caused by VMware. It appeared here since I gat a new workstation with an Intel 82Q35 integrated graphics controller. Quality of X drivers seem to detoriate... If my guess of your root cause is right, this is a better solution than calling setxkbmap. setxkbmap installs a default mapping, but not the specific mapping that you had beforehand. [opensuse] Dual boot: Suse does not find non-Suse distros

I recently installed Open Suse 11.3 beta (build 0625) on a system with another Linux distro in another partition. Interestingly, Suse gave me no option for configuring dual boot, and the resulting boot menu showed only the Suse partition. [opensuse] openSUSE on SSD?

Has anyone started seriously testing and tinkering with openSUSE on SSD drives? The prices are dropping and I'm thinking it's time to move over to SSD for my main drive - I'm thinking I'll do this around the release of 11.3. I've been doing some reading, and see a lot of conflicting info... in one place I see notes that you must set noatime and you cannot(should not) put the swap on the SSD drive.... among many others... like running a cron job to clear or write memory on a regular basis (something to that effect was discussed here, but without any clear reason why you'd need to so this or what was actually being doen.... at least not that I saw. Most of the rest of the information is at least 2 years old and mostly focuses on panic over the limited read/write cycles on SSDs... one camp says no problems, just install as usual... the other says no way.. disable this and that, and put home on a reg drive, and and and. So.. what's the concensus here? Just install as normal now? Treat the drives as a reg drive? Or handle with care and assume I'm venturing into fail country? [opensuse] kcm_gtk -- again, can anyone confirm?

Listmates, Currently I am having problems with kcm_gtk (the control center module that makes your gtk apps [i.e. firefox/tbird/gimp] look like they should in kde). There have been 5+ versions of this module in the past 3 months and 3+ in the last two-weeks. Currently, the only way I can get thunderbird to look right is to manually start gnome-settings-daemon (which defeats the purpose of normally only using gcond-2 to apply the settings -- gnome-settings-daemon is rather big) With only gcond-2 running the gtk themes only partially render. Even with gnome-settings-daemon running, all the file (open/save/save-as) dialogs are screwed up. The coloring is ignored and the font size is screwed up. Here are a couple of screenshots that will help. gnome-settings-daemon is running in theses screenshots. (much worse with just gcond-2 running) The first shows this email message. Notice the menubar is blank (black text on black bg), and the menus are unreadable (black text on dark menus). (60k) http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/openSuSE/tbird-gtk-menus.jpg Basically, the part of opensuse that reads you .gtkrc-2.0-kde4 (or -kde for kde3) isn't using the gtk theme colors and is using a black default that really screws things up. Next, all of the dialogs (tooltips included), ignore your chosen font size and make all fonts Ginormous (Ji-norm-ous). It looks like a default 12pt font size is used instead of the set 8pt. So I don't think it is the kcm_gtk package itself, but whatever part of opensuse reads the .gtkrc-2.0-kde* is likely what has changed and is now broken. Does anybody know what package/process this is? All was working great until 5-6 days ago, then after update, all hell broke loose. Anybody else seeing this? -- or am I just lucky :p -- David C. [opensuse] Windows 7 question

Hi all, I've set up my nice new system as dual boot, Win7 & SuSE 11.2. Everything is ok, but for one thing at the moment. I got Win7 with my system here in Germany. I was told by the clerk that I could tell it to use English the first time I turned it on. Well, it did not work. Now every time I use Win7 it comes up in German. [opensuse] GeForce G210 question

Hi all, My new HP box has this NVidia card in it. Can someone suggest an EASY way to configure this card? The program from NVidia is a true PIA and I'm ready to return the whole "§$" thing just because of this. I'm trying to get a Symsung 2494hs to work at 1920x1080. Suggestions, anyone?
