[opensuse] Friends computer does nothing but sounds like it is keeping rebooting.

Hello, Please exuse my mistakes as I am still suffering from something like a stroke. A friend of mine havse been using openSUSE for a few years but does have to dual boot for some of the work she does for others. Now on to what the computer is doing. 1 When powering it on all lights stay on and nothing seems to happen. Where before grub would give her a choice of what to boot into with the default of openSUSE. 2. When I place a openSUSE 11.2 DVD in the machine all lights still stay on but I hear a constant beep like when the system comes up. 3. This all started when someone who just started renting a room was using her computer late at night and when she woke up to run to the bath room she heard things coming from the front room. She went into the front room and found him with her computer and she thinks pretending tp be a sleep. The lights were still warm and it really appeared as if he had just turned off the light. 4; The next morning she went to use the computer and it is now in this state where all lights stay on and nothing more happens. I suspect either a MS windows virus as this person has always messed with her varrious computers through the years. Or he did some thing he did not intend to do that has caused this outcome. The computer is a HP Pavillion Entertainment PC and from the back HP Pavillion DVD6000. Any ideas on getting this to work? She thinks this person was doing something in windows vista when he heard her and quickly shut off the computer leaving it in this state. He clams he fell a sleep in her recliener next to the computer, but the computer has not shown any signs of problems before this. She had used it till about 11:00 PM then went to bed. It was about 3:00 AM when she found him in the front room near the computer that now when powered on all the ligths come on like it always has in the past but then none go out and nothing more happens even after leaving it on for 5-10 minutes any ideas to try to assist her. This stupid illness of mine does not allow me access to any thing I used to be able to do. The Holstic supplements I started have now allowed me to talk and write somewhat, but my memory is on very old events or jumping around things I have done since the problem started. So I am seeking any assistance to get her laptop back up running linux and maybe check it for viruses in the BIOS znd maybe try what ever virus scanner she may have. She may not have any of the MS update on Vista as she has been only running linux. The main thing is I want to get the data off the machine in case it is the HD that just went bad. I have no ideas to try other than the trying to boot the openSUSE CD;s and DVD. Thanks for any new ideas. Like to sudoku so I play it regular on my computer. Since KDE4.3 I think I found some problems with KSudoku. Playing the Hard choice I was accustomed to a lot brain gymnastic and it would take me an average of ten minutes to finish a game. Now I play the Hard choice sometimes in one and a half minute. That is certainly not a higher experience level but just the choice of simple easy games. And paying a good game I sometimes are confronted with the information that i have made an error and should change the settings into "Show errors" although this choice has been ticked. Took me a long time before I made this email to the list. I tried to make bug report at http://bugs.kde.org. No success. Do not know what I missed there but after filling out the wizard I was kept asking what the program was for which I wanted to make a report. KSudoku was found under the programs but this question finally stopped my bug-reporting exercise. Also went to the KSudoku site and found that the latest version at their site was 4.0. [opensuse] KDE 4.3 repos

With the move of KDE43 into KDE4:STABLE, what about the Community and Playground repos? I am guessing that the repos for KDE4:STABLE are: /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.X_KDE4_STABLE_Desktop/ /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Playground/openSUSE_11.X_KDE4_STABLE_Desktop/ where X is the release. I see 11.0 and 11.1, but no 11.2. I guess it is on the way? I see that when I changed from KDE:43 to KDE:KDE4:STABLE:Desktop, the KDE went from 4.3.4 to 4.3.5. Basil is right, this issue is ridiculous. All versions of KDE 4.x until 4.3.5 on 2 of my desktops had no problems with separate wallpapers for each virtual desktop. KDE 4.3.5 broke this functionality (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224775) And now, as Basil had described in the previous post, KDE 4.4.0 offers an over-complicated solution involving different activities to a problem that should not have existed in the first place. Can someone explain why do we need both virtual desktops and activities? [opensuse] OSE 11.2 Not Seeing Wireless AP

Hardware: Lenovo G530 laptop OS: OSE 11.2 (x86_64) with all available patches thru this morning Briefly, WiFI worked fine on this same hardware under 11.1. I have been using a wired connection until purchasing and installing a Belkin router configured as an access point. My BlackBerry and Windows Vista (dual booted on same G530) connected and configured fine. I am using WPA2 with shared key. I had SSID advertising turned off but turned it back on trying to get 11.2 working with it. I am using NetworkManager under KDE4. The Network Connections screen shows the Wireless tab greyed out. If I switch to YaST (ifup), it sees the AP. I have seen other threads that mention enabling the wireless connection but have not been able to find where to do that. Both my 11.1 desktop and 11.2 connect to the same AP using a conventional wired connection just fine. [opensuse] Is it possible to upgrade from 32 bits to 11.2 x64?

Then I copied to it the old 11.0 install from my other computer, which now boots. During this time I got a retail DVD of 11.2 (kind compliments of Novell for collaborating in the translation to Spanish - thanks), so I thought that I would use the DVD to do the upgrade from 11.0 to 11.2 (I always do upgrades). The surprise is, that this time, the retail DVD is x64 only, it does not have the 32 bit version. It does not say so, but it is. The second surprise is that it, when pointed to upgrade the 11.0 partition (which I had to point to, manually), it said: The architecture of the system installed in the selected partition is different from the one of this product" [continue] [cancel] I said "continue", then I checked the package list. As far as I could see, it intended to replace all packages with those corresponding to the 64 bits version. If this works, fine... but I was afraid, and I cancelled. Not because risking data (it is a copy), but because of possible wast of time. I thought I'd better RFC. Has anybody done this, an upgrade from 32 to 64 bits? Does it work? [opensuse] kde44 kate crashing - Last Message -> KateCompletionWidget::abortCompletion error?

Listmates, In kde44, kate has crashed about 5 times in the last hour which is more than it has crashed on my in the past 5 years combined. I had started kate with 'kate &' from konsole to see what type of output I was getting. Since these app crashes are not triggering drkonqi, I'm not sure which message is the one I should be concerned about. The final messages before the latest crash seem to involve 'KateView::slotGotFocus', 'KateView::slotLostFocus', and 'KateCompletionWidget::abortCompletion:' which repeated several times just before the crash. The last 50 or so lines of output are below.
