[opensuse] D-Bus daemon hanging #2

I've just noticed a different problem that also appears to be an out of control dbus daemon. (1) ssh -X to a machine running opensuse2 (2) start firefox (3) quit firefox (4) logout of the ssh via ctrl-d Result: the session fails to terminate. Looking with ps I see dhoworth 30675 1 0 13:56 ? 00:00:00 dbus-launch --autolaunch 7b3efb92d4779debd063b9394aef7162 --binary-syntax --close-stderr dhoworth 30676 1 0 13:56 ? 00:00:00 /bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session The same happens if I run gedit but not with xeyes Is this a known problem? [opensuse] 11.2 nvidia Upgrading fails nvidia.ko module linking

Hello List, I've already sent something related to this not critical issue in the past and I'm again posting on the matter since I've recently upgraded nvidia drivers onto my openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 which still encountered same problem: kernel version is updated but nvidia.ko went still installed onto an old /lib/...kernel version on my machine so I'm obliged to create a symbolic link into the latest kernel /lib/modules...folder. Sorry to be not clear enough on the details, but I'm at work and far from the affected system, by the way I hope you get the point. Hi All, I've run in to a problem with OpenSuSE 11.3 where the boot sequence hangs at "Starting D-Bus daemon". Quick searches on the net seems to suggest that this happens when ldap is used for authentication in conjuction with autofs being enabled. I've just started using LDAP for authentication and I simultaneously enabled autofs. Anyone else run in to this? Any workarounds? Any input appreciated. [opensuse] Equivalentt to Kover in KDE4

Hello all, I remember doing this before, but I am sure things have changed in 11.3. I have 2 printers setup on my OS 11.3 and want to share one of them with a Win XP computer on my home network. I can see and setup the printer from the Win box but it shows a status of Access Denied. I did check online:http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Printing_from_Windows_to_Linux but some things it refers to I just don't find. * 1.1 Step 1: YaST control center * 1.2 Step 2: Edit /etc/cups/mime.convs configuration file * 1.3 Step 3: Restart CUPS server I do not find the file in step #2. [opensuse] Amarok crashing

I first tried to use the stock Amarok that came with 11.3. Upon opening it, it gets to splash screen and then crashes. Every signle time. Whether anything else is running or it's by itself on the desktop. Fine. I bug it at kde.bugs. I'm told by them to upgrade to 2.3.2, which I did yesterday (all but the debug rpm's...I'm on dial-up and 23MB is a bit much to download for something I was *hoping* was simple). I install Amarok 2.3.2 (from an opensuse 11.3 repo, by the way), anticipating being able to use it. Amarok crashes, in the exact same way as before. I bug this one again (this time with the generic debug info that kde.bugs window says isn't good enough to send, btw). [opensuse] NCL2.0 sp2, OS 11.3

Recently installed openSuSE 11.3 on my PC (having run 11.0, 11.1, 11.2 each time using the appropriate version of the Novell Client for Linux (as I dwell in a NetWare shop)) and using the NCL 2.0 sp2 (like I did on openSuSE 11.2) I was able to run the login script, etc. like the Win users so when they have file and folder questions I can 'see' what they were seeing, etc. Recently, the week of Oct 18th, I installed some updates that broke NCL?! Un-installed NCL via YAST, rebooted, re-installed it - the usual stuff - but still not working. I rolled back a version or two of the kernel, hoping that was the solution, but it's still broken. When I tag the Novell login tray icon I get the error 'Cannot scan Connection References. Error:NWCCScanConnRefs:' Within the description box I see the file ncpConnectionRefScanner.cpp is listed with a line reference and so on... Anyone else seeing this type of NCL breakage? At the moment, I'm trying to roll back my updates to get to the point of functionality but still no luck after a few days... Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Just in case anyone was following this thread - I asked this question back in august or september - at the time I settled on using plain old zip, because it was the fastest when it came to extraction. However, I have just recently come across 'cromfs' which I don't think was mentioned back then. cromfs is exactly what I was looking for - high compression ratio, fast random access. It also works fine with automount, which became a requirement (as it is a file system). I am trying to see how the yast "Install to directory" feature works. I am curious why all software packages seem to be a dependency. (Shown in Yast as a check with three dots under it.) For example, GIMP is selected. As it seems to be a dependency, I cannot deselect it from installation. In fact, if I check the Installation Summary tab, all packages are like this. OpenOffice? ImageMagick? I am interested in this so I can install various versions of the OS for use in a local chrooted build environment that should create compiled binaries for various openSUSE releases. I did this a while back for making Gentoo software on openSUSE and it worked great. I have received a message from my hosting service informing me that they have found that my FTP password has been compromised by an intruder or a trojan, and that they have cleaned it of malicious software and given it a temporary password. They urge me to perform a "full anti-viral scan on your local PC (using an in-depth scanner)". Through YaST I have searched the usual repos plus Packman to find software to make such a scan, but there is little there, and all of it seems to be for mail gateways or proxies, which I think are not relative. I've also searched the Web. especially openSuSE pages, for helpful information, but so far have not recognized any. [opensuse] Hauppauge 900H DVB-T and scanning for analog channels?

I have been working with my Hauppauge WinTV900H USB stick DVB-T tuner (phew, that;'s a mouthful). I managed to get it "working" in openSUSE 11.3 by installing the v4l/dvb stuff from the repositories, copying an xc3028L-v36.fw file (I found/downloaded) to /lib/firmware, and doing a modprobe tm6000. I have connected the input for the USB stick to the cable TV outlet. The cable provider has 52 analog channels that this 900H can pickup/tune in Windows. If I tell it (in Windows) to scan for DVB-T, it finds nothing, but if I tell it to scan for cable analog channels, it finds the 52 available channels. This is expected since the signal on the cable feed is analog. So... now that I've got the tuner working in Linux (as in recognized and switched on, ready to be used) how do I convince it to scan for the 52 analog channels instead of the default DVB-T channels? scan <location> -o zap | tee ~/channels.conf just ends in "tuning failed" errors when it can't find a signal at the predefined frequencies in the location file.... which I suppose makes sense since the "T" and analog are not the same thing I tinkered with TVTime, MeTV, and VLC... and all can find the 900H, and all scan the T side for channels but do not scan the analog part... or at least I can't find a way to scan for analog. Has anyone got this far with a 900H? Any tips? Anyone know of a way to switch on/scan the analog side of the 900H in Linux? I would like to summarize the background and the current situation of the inability of my desktop system to boot normally (I am able to boot it through grub commands), I would like to hope that someone will be able to offer a sollution for the problem. The system has two HDs; at present, the active system is oS v22.3 on hd0, while hd1 contains v11.1. Each of these has a /boot directory with its own GRUB; the MBR is generic, with no boot loader. Se;ectopm betweem tje, os made by an IBM Boot Manager. Only the GRUB of hd1 is functional; trying to boot through the hd0 GRUB produces a black screen immediately after the POST routine. People I have consulted attribute the problem to the fact that at some point the data connectors of the two HDs were interchanged at the time that one of them was replaced by a new disk, thus confusing the BIOS, and this is entirely possible. On the other hand, the problem did not appear at the time I had the newe HD installed, but only quite a few weeks later. I don't understand why a confused BIOS would continue to function rationally for weeks before exhibiting schizoid symptoms. Also unexplained is why one of the GRUBs works and the other doesn't. If BIOS confusion is the reason for the problem, that would mean that the BIOS chip has stored somewhere the assumed order and location of the HDs. I have to wonder if there is not a way to delete that memory, perhaps by removing a jumper on the MB. I don't find any reference to such a jumper in the MB documentation (this is an Intel board, 915GAV -- an older board with a Pentium IV CPU). Below I list some of the small files in the GRUB directories of each HD, in the hope that these may be of assistance. If someone wants additional information that I haven't thought of, please ask. I must have registered with KDE Forums some time ago, but now I can't remember what username I used, nor the password. It says if you have trouble to get in touch with the Board Administrator. How does one do that? (When I tried to register as a new member, it said my email address was already in use.) But you have to have a username in order to ask for password help. Catch 22. anyone? The Chrome browser from obs://build.opensuse.org/openSUSE:11.3 which is version 8.0.556 exhibits some broken behavior that I've not seen in any other version. Hello listmembers, Recently I installed KDE4.5 onto my 11.2, by following opensSUSE guidance and I've been very well impressed of this new DE release. Now if I try a zypper ref; zypper up, then I notice several KDE packages available but since they come from different vendor (OBS instead of openSUSE) they went no installed. In these cases I know, I should limit the repos to "dup" with --repo, or --from switch, but wonder if doing so then I risk to broke something. [opensuse] Trashed boot loader

OK, I got a kernel update and it trashed the boot loader leaving in a grub prompt. SO, since the system repair option was removed because "about the only thing it was used for was to fix the boot loader", how do I fix it? I really don't want to re-install. [opensuse] Kernel update

Hi, I am running suse 11.1 on this laptop. I have found that if I update the computer, the cooling fans stop running and never come on again after reboot. I have traced this to a recent kernel update from 2.6.27.45-0.1 to 2.6.27.48. If I downgrade to the previous kernel to get the fans back on, the new kernel always shows up as an patch available. If I update all packages, the kernel gets updated. [opensuse] Preserving LVM after after os reload

Hi guys, I have two disk one with OS and a second disk containing an LVM. I would like to OS reload the server without losing LVM. I heard that LVM is self sustaining. Is that true ? Should I backup something(using vgcfgbackup & vgexport ?) to get LVM running after os reload. I did confirm that its not the DHCP that is taking long - I can also that that as soon as I see the NetworkManager applet shows up (after 5-6 minutes) on the desktop that DHCP takes less than a second.
