[opensuse] non-standard characters in 11.3 rpm data causing problems with createrepo

Guys, Just fyi, creatrepo throws info warning on the foreign characters included in rpm metadata. Earlier versions of createrepo would choke on these. [opensuse] wierd things while making XEN dom-u

One of my co-workers needs an ubuntu system. As i don't want to sacrifice my SuSE machines, so i tried to create a virtual machine with XEN, but i run into strange things... # xm create kc3029.cfg Using config file "./kc3029.cfg". [opensuse] cron - Permission denied?

I'm beginning to upgrade some systems to 11.3, and have hit a weird problem - I have some cron entries in /etc/cron.d for running under certain system userids. Before 11.3, this was not a problem, but now I get "Permission denied". I've googled some and have seen e.g.: http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47456 which appears to describe a very similar problem. The userid in question is uid=112, no login, has a password (I think YaST required it) and shell=/bin/false. [opensuse] ACER 3820TG - Network card init very slow

Hello, I have setup SUSE 11.3 x86_64 on my laptop and everything seems fine except that when I plug a network cable into the laptop NIC port, the network takes about 5 minutes before it initializes and responds. It is annoying to wait for about 5-7 minutes for the network card to be available. [opensuse] kernel update oddities

Yesterday I was offered a kernel update for an 11.2 system. I was curious enough to look at the description and then to look further and was somewhat surprised at what I found. The description was: ==== kernel-3323 (noarch) This update is needed to fix a security vulnerability with this package. The updated openSUSE 11.2 kernel fixes the following security bugs: CVE-2010-3310: Local users could corrupt kernel heap memory via ROSE sockets. CVE-2010-2962: Local users could write to any kernel memory location via the i915 GEM ioctl interface. Additionally the update restores the compat_alloc_userspace() inline function and includes several other bug fixes. So I decided to check the individual bug reports. I was a bit surprised by the first one, which causes major corruption of XFS filesystems and which has been fixed but left outstanding for quite some time! That doesn't encourage me to rely on the system for my data. I was surprised in a different way by the other three, because it's not possible to access them! At least, not unless you have a Novell account and are prepared to login to it. I wasn't last night. Is it policy that kernel updates are sent out without open documentation of what they contain? I'd have expected that to violate the GPL but then I haven't thought about it too hard yet. [opensuse] root login not allowed from kdm

A user has fiddled with a system so that root logins are not allowed from kdm. I can ssh in as root, and su to root. But not a graphic login. I get a window that says "Root logins are not allowed." So, I looked in the display manager settings, being sure that these items are set as follows: PERMISSION_SECURITY="easy local" DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" DISPLAYMANAGER_ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="yes" It makes no difference. I have no idea what else they may have changed. I edited the values in YaSt, just to be sure. I even restarted the display manager (rckdm restart). What else is controlling this? [opensuse] Opensuse won't boot after Win 7 install

Hi, there was a previous thread that I read about a month ago where someone had installed Suse first, then windows. After that they couldn't get Suse to boot. I just rebuilt my 10 year old desktop with a new MB and CPU, and installed Suse first on an extended partition, then Windows. After the window install, Grub didn't show up and Suse wouldn't boot. I reread the thread I mentioned above, but didn't find clear directions as to how to resolve the problem. After a little research, I found out how to fix the problem, so here is how I got it to boot. I used gparted, available here: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php I booted from the gparted disk, then when its desktop came up, I opened up a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon on the desktop. Then I typed the following commands: YouType: grub Terminal: grub> YouType: find /boot/grub/menu.lst Terminal: (hd0,5) "or different, depending on your set up, so replace the numbers to reflect your installation." YouType: root (hd0,5) Terminal: filesystem is ext3fs, partiontype 0x83 YouType: setup (hd0) "I did this because I was setting up grub in the MBR, change this to reflect you preference of where you want grub to live." Terminal: Checking...Succeeded...Done YouType: quit reboot My grub already had an entry for windows because I had partitioned my first primary drive and formatted it to NTSF before I installed any operating systems. So I was able to boot windows after reboot. [opensuse] HD video editing

Have a bundle of HD video files, that I have converted to MPG using ffmpeg and would now like to put on DVD. Have been suffering trying to do this in kdenlive, and all is excellent, except... after rendering, audio ends up several seconds out of sync over the 1+ hours of video (but looks fine when playing back in kdenlive). Have googled and apparently this is a known prob, but the only fix I can find is to separate the audio/video (of 100+ files... :-( ) Have tried using Cinellera, but seems like lots of hard work....? Any other options/solutions? Thought I would ask here (generically) before trying in the kdenlive forums.... [opensuse] KDE 45 Repo in sync?

Hi all Maybe this is a transient thing, but it has been like this for at least 15 hours so I thought I would ask here (plus it seems like a slow day on the list). There is a mismatch between what zypper lu proposes and what currently exists in the KDE45 Release repo. For example libkdecore4 zypper lu or up proposes an update to libkdecore4-4.5.2-9.1.x86_64.rpm but in the repo itself (chekced with a web browser) is libkdecore4-4.5.2-10.1.x86_64.rpm The update fails to complete. (There may be other similar mismatches, but this is the first package that casues zypper to choke.) I tried several times to force a refresh of the repos in zypper but the situation persists. Is anyone else seeing this?
