[opensuse] migrating SUSE 9.2 to virtualbox machine

I have a physical server running SUSE 9.2 (which I cannot upgrade), and I am attempting to move it to a virtual machine using VirtualBox. I have changed grub and fstab to reflect the new hard drive names (hda instead of sda). I can get the virtual machine to boot into single user mode, but it freezes after a few minutes. If I boot into runlevel 5, I get an ncurses Yast which says "ACCEPT" and "CANCEL" and shows a big gray box where the menu choices should be. Choosing "ACCEPT" or "CANCEL" locks up the virtual machine. What am I missing? I'm guessing it's a hardware detection problem. I'm pretty experienced with Linux, but I'm new to SUSE. The day when KDE 3 will no longer be viable is getting closer every day. Please tell me what problems you are having with KDE 4.3 so that we can get them fixed. KDE 3 is great because it is mature, configurable, and feature-laden without being bloated. I do not want to see that go to waste! It is the KDE 3 holdouts who have the attention to detail to distinguish the "little things" that make KDE 3 so great that are currently lacking in the KDE 4 branch. Note that KDE 4.3 really solves most of the issues for me and most other people that I deal with. In fact, the features is adds over KDE 3 were enough to get me to switch. So please try KDE 4.3 and _let_me_know_ what does not work for you so that we can file bugs. I want to know about missing features, unintuitiveness, bugs, regressions, anything. You _will_ need to relearn some minor things as KDE 4 is a rewrite of KDE, not a Qt4 port of KDE 3, however let's get the major issues fixed. Thanks. KDE really needs the picky, stubborn KDE 3 users to push the devs (who might not have the same attention to detail as us) in the right direction. Hello SuSE people, On my old 64 bit 10.3 OS version something strange has happened. Won't boot with a kernel panic. The message is "bin/run-init /sbin/init Permission denied" and then I get a kernel panic. Googled it to no avail. Why? What could have happened to cause this? OS: Linux 2.6.27.25-0.1-default x86_64 System: openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) KDE: 4.3.00 (KDE 4.3.0) "release 152" Using Dolphin, I right click on a file bringing up the context menu. I select "Rename ..." and rename the file. The file appears in Dolphin with the new name and a "ls" at the command line shows that the file has indeed been renamed. Why then in Dolphin when I drag (copy) this file to another folder (local or remote) does it place the file in the directory with the old name rather than the new name? Is this A known bug that has been addressed? An isolated problem with my machine? A feature by demented design? The product of an embedded decision engine in Dolphin? The result of a secret grant or infiltration by MS? [opensuse] Local cache of updates, installed programs in openSUSE

[opensuse] Mount USB HD on plug-in

Hi all. I have 2 external USB HDD's that I use for backup purposes, one of which is used for nightly backups run from cron, the other for ad-hoc backup and general storage use. I have setup udev rules for these drives to create persistent dev symlinks for them and they auto-mount when accessed from dolphin, but I would like them to auto-mount as soon as the system detects that they're plugged in. I know that this used to be possible, and I'm sure it still is; I just don't know which config files I need to create/edit to make it happen under openSuse. Can some kind person please point me in the right direction, either with an example or a link to a web page where I can find the right info? Google hasn't been particularly helpful so far (but maybe I'm just searching for the wrong text). [opensuse] JAVA revisited, need clarifications

Hi list, I'm afraid this question reveals a lot of holes in my knowledge. Well, on the other hand, there are other things I know about, please foregive me :-) Will someone be kind enough and explain the correlation between the various JAVA stuff. This way I'll be able to set things up manually if need be. My problems are most likely not related to my JAVA version(s), but more likely that my general JAVA setup is flawed. To start with, I download a JRE from SUN. Not the JDK, I'm not developing things, just running JAVA stuff, right? I'll install that using whatever, most likely RPM or the binary selfextracing SUN file. This will put some JAVA stuff into a directory below /usr/lib/some-java-directory. The binary java of which is the very file thats giving me an answer when in a shell I give: "java -version". The word 'java' in itself is a symlink placed in /etc/alternatives, right? In /etc/alternatives there is a link to 'jre', I guess that needs to point to somewhere down into the /usr/lib/jave structure? As well as the link /etc/alternatives/jvm should point to somewhere sensible? Now, down deep into /usr/lib/java I find a file under '.../i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so. I place a symlink to this file in /home/my-user-name/.mozilla/plugins/., right? I then fire up FF and goto java.com to see what java I have installed? I could also point FF to about:plugins to reveal more info? What have I missed here. I suppose the two files (the java binary itself and the oji-thing) should have the same origin? Or what? And mind you, I didn't ask about Seamonkey og Icedtea and all the other interesting stuff that aparently has to do with JAVA too...? Again, I'm most thankful for any clarification that will be written. I hope others can use this as well. All this arises because JAVA was automatically updated in my openSuSE11.1 yesterday morning. This causes my netbank (and literally thousand of other openSUSE users in this coundtry) not to work anymore. Since upgrading to KDE 4.3, the plasma-desktop process is constantly running with around 35% CPU utilisation across all CPU cores. This also seems to be affecting the kwin process which is consuming around 25% CPU, also across all cores. Listmates, Be aware, fish:// is still broken. If you leave a document open, the connection times out with document open. The initial connection problem appears fixed, but the remainder of this bug is NOT fixed. Specifically, after a text file has been open for 15-30 minutes using the fish:// protocol to access the file on another box on the LAN, additional attempts to save the document result in the same "Connection Broken" message that was received originally. I just notice that there will be nomore kde3 for the upcomming openSUSE 11.2. I don't want to grin. Not necessary. I just wanted to ask here what do you have in kde3.5 and don't find in kde4 and you would like to have. Not to say you will have it but to give info to devs... I stopped using kde4 on 11.1 for problems in the config panel and lack of understanding of the new windows layout. Listmates, It seems in my firefox install (3.0.13) the keyboard shortcuts for switching between tabs are broken. They are supposed to be ctrl+left_arrow and ctrl+right_arrow. I recently installed opensuse 11.1 on a box and just tried to start openoffice without success. I installed everything via yast, which says I have 3.0.0.9-1.10 (i586) from openSUSE-11.1-Oss repository. I checked updates and there are none outstanding. I'm running via an ssh session so I typed 'oowriter' and got the response: /usr/bin/oowriter: line 2: /usr/lib/ooo3/program/soffice: No such file or directory which oowriter returns /usr/bin/oowriter, which does indeed say: #!/bin/sh /usr/lib/ooo3/program/soffice -writer "$@" and an ls confirms that soffice does not exist: ~> ls /usr/lib/ooo3/program/ about.bmp fundamentalrc libnpsoplugin.so resource sofficerc versionrc bootstraprc intro.bmp redirectrc setuprc spadmin So I think I've installed in the standard way, but I don't find any similar problem reports. Hi, I am looking for a how to guide for setting up a autoyast server that uses the CLI, not yast GUI. This makes sence because servers usually won't have x11/gnome etc installed. None of our servers do. The only guides I have found presume that all servers use the yast GUI. E.g. http://support.novell.com/techcenter/articles/nc2006_03a.html However, this won't help those that won't use the GUI. Does anyone know where I can find such a guide. Listmates, I'm parsing output that has the degree symbol in it in c. The character code for the symbol is 167, but of course the ascii character set it limited to 0-127. Believe it or not, using a cut-n-paste into the strtok delimiter set works, but that just feels like a cludge. Example: const char delimiters[] = " +°,;:!-"; <snip 1st call to strtok> token = strtok (NULL, delimiters); Will break the string on ° correctly. But looking at how c is handling this clude causes concern: for (i=0;i<strlen(delimiters);i++) { printf("%c %d\n", delimiters[i],delimiters[i]); } Yields: 32 + 43 � -62 � -80 , 44 ; 59 : 58 ! 33 - 45 Hmm, any time I see the little � character, that's a bad sign. So, is there any trick to handling the chars that are outside of the normal ascii chars, but we seem to run into all the time? Is this the area of the thinly defined wchar_t? -- David C. Hello SuSE people, A short while ago I replaced my old monitor and video card. I also had to replace my printer that died on me. (what else can happen?)I have an old 10.2 install that I want to keep but that meant updating the OS to see the new hardware. Naturally none of the software could deal with the new hardware. Now, I know that 10.2 is un-supported but there are repos out there yet for getting newer software. Found them easily enough, using the following url: http://opensuse-community.org/Package_Sources/10.2. When I try to install the new repos both Yast & zypper fail because they can't recognize the "sources". Soooo, how do I convince yast or zypper to let me to designate and use those repos in my Installation Sources? Listmates, If you update to php5.3 from the OBS/php repository, be aware you will need to change your configuration a bit. There are fairly significant changes in php5.3 between what is a module and what is handled in a new sense. When you install php5.3, you will need to make use of the /etc/php5/*/php.ini.rpmnew files that contain the configuration layout expected by php5.3. The easy way to do this is just to copy your current php.ini to php.ini.52, then copy php.ini.rpmnew to php.ini. To move your changes over, the way I found least painful is to open the 52 ini file next to the new 53 ini in kdiff3, then with the new php.ini open in kwrite (as root), just adjust and merge your 52 setting into the ini file. If you are not familiar with kdiff3, just make sure you have it install and if not, install it: rpm -q kdiff3 || sudo zypper in kdiff3 You can simply just use diff, but I like the side-by-side scrolling of kdiff3. Pay particular attention to the following 2 settings: open_basedir = include_path = see: http://php.net/open-basedir http://php.net/include-path Specifically make sure there are no trailing '/' characters at the end of any of the path elements -- UNLESS -- you intend for apache and php to search that directory and NOT TO descend any further. Simply removing the trailing '/' in those setting cured 99% of my php5.2->5.3 update problems. YMMV Once you have finished moving your php 5.2 settings to the new php.ini, restart apache (rcapache2) and see if things are working. So far on my 10.3 servers, I still have XMLResponse errors with eGroupware and squirrelmail 1.52 will not log in. Otherwise, all is well. (I think the sqmail issue is an include_path issue) Good luck. (P.S. if it still won't work, just disable the php repo and downgrade to php 5.2.9 in the updates repository - works fine as well) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I followed Andre's suggestion and mopunted the partition through Yast2. I gave it the name "storage" (see system commands output at the bottom). The problem now is that as user "mauede" I am not allowed to move or copy any file to "storage", though I can list its contents it (ls command). I tried to change the accessrights as root using the command chmod and even tried to change its owner using chown. Apparently such commands are executed (no error message) but nothing changes..... what am I doing wrong ? Dear all, Is there a procedure to create a golden image of a SLES / OpenSUSE installation akin to a flash archive in Solaris' jumpstart that one could use for (re)installation? I googled a little but probably used the wrong keywords. I have a dual-boot desktop ( Windows & SuSE). The hard disk was partitioned (not by me) as shown in the attached picture. A partition (/dev/sda1) contains Windows O.S. and space ghas been allocated for typical Windows applications. Another partition (I think it is /dev/sda2) has been created for Linux O.S. and its applications. Some space should have been allocated to /swap. Maybe it is the 10GB one ??? Then there are another 2 partitions that should have been created ( (ntfs-3g 42.5 GB and 4.5 GB) according to my expressed desire) to share data between SuSE and Windows. However from SuSE I cannot see such "utility" partitions. I think because they are not mounted by default ... ???
