[opensuse] KDE 4.3.0 - plasma-desktop high CPU utilisation
Since upgrading to KDE 4.3, the plasma-desktop process is constantly running with around 35% CPU utilisation across all CPU cores. This also seems to be affecting the kwin process which is consuming around 25% CPU, also across all cores. Before I hit the KDE tracker I was wondering if anyone else who has upgrade is experiencing similar high CPU usage from plasma? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, See my "nepomukfromhell" thread. Check with: # ps ax | grep -i nepo to confirm nepomuk is running. The from the same x-term or konsole window, use "top" to see what is eating your cpu. Normally, you shouldn't see more than the following cpu percentages for X/kde4 X 3-5% idle with brief 10-15% usages when rearranging windows, etc plasma-desktop 0-1% with a couple of desktop widget running (CPU Meter, RAM Meter, Clock) compiz 0-1% Where I experience problem is: nepomukservices 98-103% of cpu This is just a bug. If it is the problem for you, then (1) move /usr/share/autostart/nepomukserver.desktop to some temp location and log out and log back in and check again. See the other thread for more details if this is your problem. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I narrowed it down to the system tray applet, toggling the option to show/hide icons stopped the CPU hogging. Go figure... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My plasma-desktop (updated from KDE 4.2) uses 1% or less. You might try with a different user and if that works better, stop palsma, move the configs (~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*) that make your plasma misbehave and restart plasma from scratch. Also make sure to test without compiz and check whether your Qt version fits your KDE version, both issues did cause trouble in the past. I have isolated the cause of escalating cpu usage on plasma-desktop "on my machine". I change "Application Launcher" from the "new Kickoff Menu Style" to the old standard "traditional" and immediately the cpu usage starts gradually dropping down around the 1.6-1.7% area. I repeatedly read the cpu usage for plasma-desktop every five minutes and noted the time when I made changes and can correlate the usage changes directly to changing the "Application Launcher". Using the new Kickoff version used as high as 47%. :^( Bugs: novell: 529358 kde: 204183 -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

One other thing that kde4 got right with the classic menu is the ability to show menu titles in the menu. Application Launcher Settings (rt-click on start menu icon) -> Options -> show menu titles It breaks up the layout of the menu nicely: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde4/classic-menu-titles.jpe... P.S. I forgot to provide a screenshot of the System Monitor - CPU widget in my last post, so here it is FWIW: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/kde4/cpu-widget.jpeg -- David C. I'm not much of a gee-whiz widget guy, but one of the plasma-desktop widgets that I do use is the "System Monitor - CPU" graph. It is excellent for giving a small concise visual representation of your CPU load so you can catch at a glance any deviation in CPPU utilization. I find it really handy. After a day or so, you learn the cpu usage personalities of your box (idles 2-5%, normal browsing, word processing, email 5-15%, +10-20% with virtual box running as well, etc..) so if you look down and your pegged at 40% cpu usage, you know that something is misbehaving... -- David C. yes, I have been seeing it for about three weeks or so. It was bad when I first installed Factory on 28 June and about a week later was ok and now is bad again. When I see it bad, I do: killall plasma-desktop;wait;plasma-desktop and the usage goes back to 4-5% on 1 cpu. I have *not* reported this. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Got fed up today and made a bug report, 529358. I tried your suggestion of *not* displaying the icons and my usage *immediately* shot up from ~12% to ~28% :^(. I normally configure the task bar hidden. Will reverse that and reinstate showing icons. I'm afraid it is about vga adapter driver issue[0]. Are you using ATI card with fglrx driver?
